Bo Nickal, Khamzat Chimaev Respond To Colby Covington’s RAF Promo

Colby Covington has always been one to ruffle feathers and stir up drama, but his mic time at RAF 6 has left some of his fellow competitors unimpressed.

Covington was at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona, for the RAF 6 event and took to the mic to ask the crowd who they’d like to see him face off with next.

Covington polled the crowd on three potential names — Arman Tsarukyan, Kamaru Usman, and Georges St Pierre.

“I’ve got a couple of names in mind,” Covington said. “How about that little spoiled brat from Armenia, Arman Tsarukyan? What about the trilogy with Marty FakeNewsman? I beat him last time we were in Madison Square Garden. Come to the Real American Freestyle mat, I’m going to beat you here, Marty.

“And then I got one more name, because there’s nothing more like as an American than beating those Canadians’ a**. Georges St Pierre, where you at?”

Colby Covington Makes RAF Callouts, Bo Nickal and Khamzat Chimaev Call Him Out

Even though Covington did not refer to competing next in the Octagon, his comments at the RAF event sparked responses from some of his fellow UFC stars.

One of those names is Bo Nickal, who has expressed a desire to compete against Covington on the UFC White House card in June.

Nickal claims the former interim welterweight champion is using RAF to avoid facing off with him in a battle of former NCAA Division-I All-Americans in the Octagon.

“Colby the clown running scared,” Nickal posted on social media. “He doesn’t want me to embarrass him at the White House. Man up, brother, let’s do it.”

The promo from Covington also brought out a response from UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev, who expressed openness in having a showdown with Covington on the wrestling mats.

“Next RAF, I will make American boy humble again,” Chimaev posted. “Colbiclown let’s go.”

When asked if he is injured, Chimaev clarified that he is just waiting to figure out a date for a UFC middleweight title defense against Sean Strickland.

Covington made his RAF debut at RAF 5 in January, defeating Luke Rockhold.

  • Bo Nickal Signals He’s Fighting Colby Covington at UFC White House

Bo Nickal Signals He’s Fighting Colby Covington at UFC White House

Bo Nickal appears to have publicly signaled his acceptance of a fight with Colby Covington, posting a message on X Friday evening that strongly implies the two fighters are headed for a collision at the UFC’s historic White House card on June 14.

“I have a lot of respect for Colby Covington as a competitor and someone who never backs down from a challenge,” Nickal wrote, tagging Covington, the UFC, Dana White, and President Donald Trump. “The Real American way. See you soon.”

The tweet marks a notable shift in tone from Nickal, who had spent recent weeks aggressively calling out Covington after “Chaos” appeared to pivot toward a matchup with Paddy Pimblett instead. As recently as mid-February, Nickal blasted Covington as a “coward” for seemingly dodging the fight, telling him to “man up and take your beating.”

    Bo Nickal vs Colby Covington

    Bo Nickal, Colby Covington

The rivalry between the two erupted in January at the RAF 5 press conference, where Covington directed several personal jabs at Nickal, questioning his career trajectory and MMA acumen. After defeating Luke Rockhold at the event, Covington hinted at a move to middleweight — only to later reverse course and declare he preferred to remain at 170 pounds, citing a desire to face a non-American opponent on the patriotic card.

Nickal, a three-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion currently competing at middleweight, had previously identified Covington as his top target for the event.

“A matchup with Colby makes a lot of sense, especially considering how the last RAF event unfolded,” Nickal told MMA Fighting earlier this month. “This feels like the fight that needs to happen.”

The UFC’s White House event — set for the South Lawn on Flag Day, June 14, also President Trump’s 80th birthday, is reported to already be finalized internally. Dana White confirmed last week that the card is complete, though no official bouts have been announced.

It remains to be seen whether Nickal vs. Covington has been formally booked or whether Friday’s tweet represents Nickal’s public acceptance of an offer currently in the works. Neither the UFC nor Covington’s camp has issued a response as of publication.

VIDEO: Bo Nickal Crushes Rodolfo Vieira With Violent Head Kick KO At UFC 322

Bo Nickal looked to rebound from his first professional loss in highlight fashion, and while it looked

After a brief feeling out process, Nickal quickly scooped Vieira up and slammed him to the mat. Vieira scrambled to the fence but Nickal laid into him with a series of punches and knees. Vieira pushed Nickal into the fence briefly, but Nickal would separate before threatening with a guillotine choke. Vieira would survive, however, as well as survive the offensive attack Nickal imposed throughout the first.

Nickal continued to piece Vieira up in the second round, busting him open in highlight fashion. Then, in the third round, Nickal used the left hand to set up a devastating head kick, dropping Vieira out cold.

Bo Nickal Sends Rodolfo Vieira To The Shadow Realm At UFC 322

Nickal, the former NCAA wrestling champion from Penn State, scored wins over Jamie Pickett, Val Woodburn, Cody Brundage, and Paul Craig to start his Octagon tenure. This was his first fight since tasting defeat for the first time, losing to Reinier de Ridder at UFC Des Moines in May.

Vieira has now lost two of his last three fights.

  • Bo Nickal Backtracks on Khamzat Chimaev Comments: “Was about Wrestling, not MMA”

UFC star Bo Nickal has explained his previous comments regarding his ability to “ragdoll” Khamzat Chimaev if they ever fought.

While Bo Nickal had an incredibly bright start to his mixed martial arts career in the wake of his sensational run in amateur wrestling, many weren’t big fans of how confident or ‘cocky’ he was being in the media. Then, when he was beaten decisively by Reinier de Ridder, there were even more questions regarding his long term future in the sport.

Of course, Bo Nickal is a champion at heart and he wants to go out there and prove he can hang with the very best. Bo has plenty of experience when it comes to dealing with adversity and when he battles Rodolfo Vieira at UFC 322, he’ll be hoping that he can showcase what he’s been able to learn ever since his loss to RDR earlier this year.

Once upon a time, Bo Nickal suggested that he would ragdoll Khamzat Chimaev if they ever met in a competitive environment, which certainly raised a few eyebrows. In a recent interview, he decided to clarify exactly what he meant by that.

Bo Nickal backtracks on Khamzat Chimaev comments

“All the stuff I said about ragdolling him — that was about wrestling, not an MMA fight. In a straight-up freestyle or collegiate match, it’s not competitive. I’m a three-time national champ, a world champion — I’ve beaten the best in the world. But in MMA, that’s a war. That’s a scrap. I’ve got to win fights first, but one day that matchup would be incredible.”

‘M*rder Of A Future President’ – Charlie Kirk’s Horrifying Assassination In Utah Devastates Combat Sports Community

Charlie Kirk’s brutal assassination stunned society, touching even the combat sports world.

On Wednesday afternoon, right-wing activist Kirk was swept into the escalating political violence gripping America as he was gunned down during an event at the Sorensen Center courtyard on the Utah Valley University campus.

The U.S. President Donald Trump’s staunch supporter was speaking to students in a campus Q&A beneath a white gazebo when a single gunshot tore through the air. Kirk clutched his neck as blood poured from the left side, while horrified onlookers scattered in terror.

Kirk was immediately taken to a hospital in a private vehicle, but Trump later confirmed on social media that he had succumbed to his injuries. The Republican leader further declared that, in honor of the late Turning Point USA co-founder, all American flags nationwide would be lowered to half-mast until Sunday evening.

  • Bo Nickal Returns To Face Veteran Submission Artist At UFC 322 Following First Career Loss

Bo Nickal Returns To Face Veteran Submission Artist At UFC 322 Following First Career Loss

Bo Nickal will be looking to get back to his winning ways.

According to a recent report by MMA journalist Higor Ciconello, Nickal is set to make his Octagon return against veteran submission specialist Rodolfo Vieira in a middleweight showdown at UFC 322 on November 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The UFC 322 card is set to feature a blockbuster double-header. In the main event, reigning UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena will make his first title defense against former lightweight king Islam Makhachev.

Meanwhile, the co-main event will feature former strawweight queen Zhang Weili moving up a division to challenge reigning bantamweight champion Valentina Shevchenko. Additionally, former 170-pound titleholder Leon Edwards will face rising finisher Carlos Prates.

When Did Bo Nickal and Rodolfo Vieira Last Compete In The UFC?

Bo Nickal last stepped into the Octagon at UFC Des Moines this past May, where he suffered the first defeat of his professional MMA career, falling to Reinier de Ridder via second-round TKO.

Before that setback, the 29-year-old wrestling phenom had strung together a four-fight winning streak. Nickal now holds a 7-1 professional record, with six of his victories coming by stoppage.

Meanwhile, Rodolfo Vieira will enter UFC 322 riding the momentum of a unanimous decision victory over Tresean Gore at UFC Vegas 108 last month, bouncing back from a February loss to Andre Petroski. “The Black Belt Hunter” has been part of the UFC roster since 2019 and has secured stoppage wins over Armen Petrosyan and Cody Brundage.

The 35-year-old Brazilian grappler boasts a professional record of 11-3, with nine victories coming by way of submission and one by knockout.

  • 5 Hits And 3 Misses From UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Deiveson Figueiredo

5 Hits And 3 Misses From UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Deiveson Figueiredo

On Saturday, the UFC continued its road trip by traveling to the city of Des Moines, Iowa — a state that the promotion hadn’t visited in over 20 years.

You want to talk about all the places the UFC hasn’t been to, or isn’t going to, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic? Try having to wait since The Dark Ages of the UFC. The last UFC event to take place in Iowa was when Cedar Rapids hosted UFC 26 in June 2000. The only other event in Iowa besides that? When the Five Seasons Events Center also hosted UFC 21 about a year earlier.

The UFC looked to bring a memorable night of action to the state to make up for its prolonged absence, and it looked to do so with a main event coming out of the stellar bantamweight division. UFC Des Moines was headlined by Cory Sandhagen and Deiveson Figueiredo doing battle in a clash of top-5 contenders at 135 pounds.

Sandhagen has been a widely popular and entertaining fighter in the division since he made his UFC debut at the start of 2018. He’s always been one to compete with the very best, and if you look at his losses entering UFC Des Moines, he’s only ever lost to the elite. That said, he always seems to be one step short of finally capturing even a shot at the bantamweight title. That was seen in his last outing, losing to Umar Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC Abu Dhabi last August.

Figueiredo, of course, once dominated the flyweight scene, having reigned as UFC flyweight champion twice while going on an epic quadrilogy with Brandon Moreno. Since joining the bantamweight division at the end of 2023, though, Figgy has had successes here, too. After the division-debuting win over Rob Font, Figueiredo scored a submission of former champion Cody Garbrandt at UFC 300 and a decision over former title challenger Marlon “Chito” Vera at UFC Abu Dhabi. Figgy, however, entered UFC Des Moines off a loss to Petr Yan at UFC Macau.

While both main event competitors looked to bounce back from losses in a division stacked with talent, another name, Bo Nickal, looked to keep his undefeated record in tact in his biggest test yet, taking on tested veteran and former ONE champion Reinier de Ridder in the UFC Des Moines co-main event. The rest of the card also featured action from the likes of Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Daniel Rodriguez and the UFC returns of both Jeremy Stephens and Mason Jones — who competed against one another.

Who delivered in the Hawkeye State? Who didn’t? Let’s go into it together with the hits and misses of UFC Des Moines!

    Hit – Gillian Robertson

Before the main card action, the UFC Des Moines prelims even featured some action from current noteworthy contenders — a top-15 contenders battle at women’s strawweight between Marina Rodriguez and Gillian Robertson and one at women’s bantamweight (which served as the featured prelim) between Miesha Tate and Yana Santos.

And of all four of these ladies, Robertson perhaps stood out as not just the most impressive of this bunch, but perhaps the most impressive out of all the prelim fighters.

Robertson looked to dominate on the ground and did just that with over five minutes of control time out of the seven or so minutes the fight lasted. Robertson pressured and landed big ground shots during the first round. Rodriguez may have went for a submission during the second round, but Robertson got out of it and went back to her vicious assault until the referee waved off the fight.

It was an appropriate performance for someone nicknamed “The Savage” as she sent Rodriguez into retirement.

Robertson has been in the UFC since season 26 of The Ultimate Fighter, and she’s always been entertaining to watch. But something has REALLY clicked for her since moving back down to strawweight. Robertson has won six of her last seven and is now 5-1 since her drop to 115, with her sole loss in that stretch coming against Tabatha Ricci — someone she has to be right next to in the top 10 at minimum when the new rankings get released.

Now this presents some interesting potential top-10 contender battles for Robertson against the likes of Jessica Andrade, Mackenzie Dern, Amanda Ribas or even a Ricci rematch. And if she performs as well against those fighters as she does against Rodriguez, the strawweight division better watch out.

    Hit – Azamat Bekoev

Azamat Bekoev’s UFC debut was so nice, the kind of performance he had in that fight he had to do twice. After putting on a great showing against Zachary Reese at UFC 311 in January, Bekoev built on that initial strong outing when he took on The Ultimate Fighter season 32 winner Ryan Loder during the preliminary card.

Loder looked to use his wrestling skills on Bekoev early on, but Bekoev battled back by reversing the position and unleashing his hands. Bekoev rocked Loder and continued to land, hitting Loder with a strong knee and a right hand that dropped Loder before unleashing more ground-and-pound until the fight was stopped.

Bekoev finished Loder 20 seconds faster than he did Reese.

The American Top Team product has now won seven straight and eight of his last 10. This included a brief run as LFA middleweight champion before stepping into the Octagon for the first time.

Bekoev also now has ten first-round finishes to his name. And if he gets an eleventh — which would make him 3-0 in the UFC with three first-round finishes — then Bekoev is going to solidify himself as both someone to keep an eye on and someone who’d need tougher competition.

Hit – Jeremy Stephens vs. Mason Jones

While the main and co-main events of UFC Des Moines had attention on them, the broadcast also continuously hyped up the main card’s opener featuring the returns of Jeremy “Lil’ Heathen” Stephens and Mason Jones. Stephens has been a longtime face of the UFC but hadn’t fought in the promotion — or in MMA for that matter — since 2021. And while he has always been an entertaining fighter, he had won in MMA just once in his previous nine. Jones, meanwhile, was looking for a rebound after going just 1-2-1 in his first stint with the promotion.

And while only one person could come out on top, the two of them delivered an absolute banger.

Jones looked to get to an early start by unleashing a flurry of punches and leg kicks — but Stephens, the hometown hero and BKFC star, fought fire with fire. While Jones got the better of the exchanges, Stephens still showed off his power and secured a takedown. Jones looked to get off to another hot start in the second, and the result was a round where both men got bloodied and battered before Jones scored a takedown and some ground-and-pound.

Jones then fought tactically in the third, utilizing his grappling to subdue Stephens’ offense en route to a clear decision victory.

For Jones, this was exactly the performance he needed to get back on the right track and continue the run of success he had from the four-fight win streak in Cage Warriors he entered with in tonight’s UFC return. And for Stephens, if this was a one-time return, then what a performance it was. If this is the start of one more run, then hopefully it is as entertaining as this fight was.

Miss – Montel Jackson vs. Daniel Marcos

For a fight that featured someone ranked No. 15 in their division and someone trying to break into the rankings after hyping himself up, Montel Jackson vs. Daniel Marcos did not live up to expectations.

In particular, for Marcos to lose his undefeated run in the manner that he did — especially with his previous wins over the likes of Davey Grant and Adrian Yañez — was, honestly, quite embarrassing.

While Marcos continuously pursued takedowns during the fight, landing three of them, they were quite ineffective, with Jackson easily able to work his way out of them. And Marcos did not seem to do any damage against Jackson. Jackson had scored his own couple of takedowns and was landing the better leg kicks and combinations when there was any trading. He even had a submission attempt at one point.

Don’t get me wrong — this wasn’t a great performance from Jackson either. It’s not one you put out when trying to move up the ranks. But the thing is — it didn’t need to be to get the win here. He just completely iced Marcos’ game. And while I understand trying to show strength at the end of the fight, I hope Marcos didn’t actually think he was robbed here.

For Marcos, this needs to be a wake-up call — if he wants to compete with the better fighters in his division, he needs to put on a display that was a lot better than the one we saw in Des Moines.

Hit – It’s Time For The Reinier De Ridder Slander To Stop

Reinier de Ridder may have been one of the most disrespected members of the UFC roster when he came to the UFC late last year. He’s been in a situation where if he loses, then the only reason he’s here is just to bury ONE Championship. And in this case, it seemed like he was being positioned as a lamb to slaughter against the UFC’s young golden boy in Bo Nickal.

Unfortunately for the UFC, this lamb bit and fought back with a solid grappling game and deadly knees.

I guess those in the MMA community who buried this fight, and maybe even people in the UFC, overlooked the fact that RdR was a judo and jiu-jitsu specialist. They overlooked his pair of silver medals at the European Brazilian jiu-jitsu championships in 2016 and 2017. They overlooked his 13 MMA victories via submission.

And while Nickal may have been an NCAA champion at Penn State, the former ONE champ-champ’s grappling experience was on full display, becoming the first man to put Nickal on his back in the Octagon. And when they fought in close during the second round, de Ridder was smart enough to notice Nickal’s negative reactions to getting kneed in the body. Nickal ate shot after shot while dealing with that pain, and another knee to the body forced him into ball up as the referee stopped the fight.

I get that de Ridder’s UFC debut against Gerald Meerschaert wasn’t the best performance. But the fact he submitted him, scored a first-round submission of Kevin Holland and now took out a young insanely hyped prospect in Nickal…it’s time to treat de Ridder as a serious name at middleweight. It’s time to get him a top-10 opponent. Let’s see what de Ridder does against someone like a Marvin Vettori, Jared Cannonier or Roman Dolidze.

Miss – The Forced Push Of Bo Nickal Bites Him

Paige VanZant. Darren Till. Sage Northcutt. All three of these names are fighters who are known in the circles of MMA as fighters who were pushed too quickly and their careers suffered for it.

Now, I’m not going to put Bo Nickal’s name in this circle yet, of course. But if you look at the history of the UFC, there have been multiple — I should even plenty — of cases where the promotion has someone of particular interest. And they push this person in terms of the promotion for their fights and even their placements on the cards. And more often than not, these fighters are not yet ready for such an experience, such opponents, and they end up taking a big defeat.

This isn’t really to trash Nickal. This is more to say the UFC just doesn’t learn.

Reinier de Ridder was not the person for Bo Nickal to fight here. I understand Nickal was coming off a win against Paul Craig — a savvy and popular fight veteran. But Craig is 37 and has won just once since mid-2022. RdR is 34, a former ONE champion at middleweight and light heavyweight and an excellent submission specialist who has had years of experience in the sport and a ranked UFC middleweight contender.

But Nickal was pushed heavily, and his confidence level didn’t help things.

Nickal is still young. There are losses that can be beneficial. There are losses that are just brief setbacks. This is the first time in his MMA career that the young man is facing adversity. If he can learn from it, this will be a great experience for him in the long run. If he can go back in the gym and work on his defense, work with really experienced veterans, work on his striking, Nickal can come out of this looking like a million bucks and a success story. But this is also dependent on the UFC pacing themselves right with Nickal and not burning him out quickly.

People in the MMA sphere already were skeptical and critical about things from Nickal’s placement on the UFC 300 main card over other standout talents and his placement as a featured fight at New York’s Madison Square Garden at UFC 309. If the UFC puts him in a position where he isn’t ready again, they may have no one to blame but themselves if Nickal’s career in the Octagon doesn’t pan out.

    Miss – Deiveson Figueiredo’s Injury

After all the anticipation for this top-5 contenders’ battle, this is not how the result of the Cory Sandhagen vs. Deiveson Figueiredo main event should have gone down.

It was a fun fight for the time it lasted, don’t get me wrong. But it was disappointing that rather than focus on defending Sandhagen’s striking attack on the ground during the first round, Figgy was more focused on Sandhagen’s legs and trying for a submission.

Figueiredo took the fight to the second, but his strategies ended up having a nasty result. During one transition on the ground, Figueiredo’s leg bent back to an uncomfortable — and unnatural — position that put him in a world of pain, forcing him to tap from the pain while Sandhagen rained down punches.

Let’s hope this isn’t going to keep Figueiredo out a while. And whenever he does come back, he still has all the talent in the world to be a viable name at 135. But the former flyweight champ has now dropped two straight for the first time in his career; he had come into this fight off a loss to former bantamweight champ Petr Yan in Macau.

Hopefully for Figueiredo’s sake, he comes back from this outing to put on a vintage, power-filled display we’ve all seen Figueiredo have before as he looks to get back on a right path toward a bantamweight title shot.

Hit – Cory Sandhagen: Is He Finally Ready For A Shot?

Speaking of bantamweight title shots, that’s what Cory Sandhagen is now on the hunt for.

As mentioned, Sandhagen delivered an all-star performance, landing great strikes on the ground and feet, getting the better in exchanges, and having the knowledge of how to work on the ground.

The exchanges with Figgy were fun, but Sandhagen was clearly the better fighter tonight — even if the injury didn’t decide the fight.

Even with Merab Dvalishvili vs. Sean O’Malley 2 booked for later this year, there are calls for Sandhagen to finally get a title shot some feel he has long deserved. Sandhagen has consistently been a strong performer in the division but has always come up one fight short in one way or another. He lost to recent title challenger Umar Nurmagomedov in his last outing prior to this card, and he came one fight short of challenging for the title in 2020, losing a title eliminator to future champ Aljamain Sterling.

Obviously the division is stacked with names, and Yan very well could be next in line for a rematch with either Dvalishvili or O’Malley, depending on who comes out on top in the title fight. But what this performance from “The Sandman” shows is that, if anything, he should only be, at most, a fight away from challenging for the gold.

  • ‘Hype Train Derailed’ – Fighters And Fans React To Bo Nickal Suffering First Loss At UFC Des Moines

‘Hype Train Derailed’ – Fighters And Fans React To Bo Nickal Suffering First Loss At UFC Des Moines

The undefeated streak of rising prospect Bo Nickal has come to an end, as he was finished by Reinier de Ridder in the co-main event of UFC Des Moines.

The first round between the two featured plenty of grappling exchanges, with de Ridder becoming the first man to put Nickal on his back in the Octagon. De Ridder appeared to get the better of Nickal on the ground with plenty of pressure.

The second round saw the pair quickly go over toward the fence in a clinch battle. De Ridder landed a knee in the first minute of the second round that appeared to land strong. Nickal managed to briefly get back control, but de Ridder got out of it and landed the knees to the body again, noticing they were doing damage.

After another knee, Nickal ate a ton of damage with punches from de Ridder. One more knee dropped Nickal, and the referee stepped right in.

Reinier De Ridder Finishes Bo Nickal At UFC Des Moines

De Ridder has now won four straight and is 3-0 in the UFC. The former ONE champion has previously submitted Kevin Holland and Gerald Meerschaert.

After a pair of wins on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022, Nickal made his UFC debut with a first-round finish of Jamie Pickett at UFC 285. The former NCAA champion followed this up with wins over Val Woodburn, Cody Brundage and Paul Craig.

  • Paul Felder Urges Bo Nickal to ‘Let it Fly’ in Des Moines Showdown

Paul Felder Urges Bo Nickal to ‘Let it Fly’ in Des Moines Showdown

UFC commentator and former lightweight contender Paul Felder issued a direct warning to undefeated prospect Bo Nickal ahead of his crucial Saturday showdown with former ONE Championship double-champ Reinier de Ridder at UFC Des Moines, urging the wrestling phenom to be more aggressive after his disappointing last outing.

In an interview with ESPN, Felder called for Nickal to bounce back from his lackluster performance against Paul Craig at UFC 309. “Because in that Paul Craig fight, he went out there, there was a lot of eyeballs, a lot of hype on this kid, and he just never pulled the trigger”, Felder told ESPN, adding “you got to go out there, you got to be aggressive. I don’t care if it’s with the striking or the wrestling, but I think he’s really got to commit”.

The criticism echoes comments Felder made during the “Believe You Me” podcast with Michael Bisping, where they discussed Nickal’s failure to utilize his wrestling against Craig. “This was an opportunity for you to be more aggressive and when it wasn’t working out on the feet, it was a huge opportunity to show him that wrestling, and he just never did that”, Felder stated, noting that “the crowd was booing like crazy” during Nickal’s cautious performance.

The 5-0 Penn State wrestling legend faces his toughest test yet in de Ridder, who brings elite submission credentials that could force Nickal to either engage his vaunted wrestling or risk getting caught in the stand-up exchanges. “Time to get choked”, de Ridder confidently stated at media day, highlighting the high-stakes grappling matchup.

Nickal, who “asked for this fight”, acknowledges the step up in competition and the need to silence critics after his hesitant showing against Craig. With an emphatic victory, the undefeated prospect could vault himself into middleweight rankings discussions and prove his fan-friendly evolution as a complete mixed martial artist rather than the tentative kickboxer he displayed last time out.

Saturday’s co-main event at Wells Fargo Arena presents Nickal with an opportunity to showcase the dominant wrestling that made him college’s most decorated grappler – but only if he heeds Felder’s advice to let it fly.

  • Reinier de Ridder Dares Bo Nickal To Wrestle In Their UFC Des Moines Clash

Reinier de Ridder Dares Bo Nickal To Wrestle In Their UFC Des Moines Clash

Reinier de Ridder wants Bo Nickal to bring his best weapon to the Octagon when they face off.

De Ridder is set to clash with Nickal in the co-main event of a UFC Fight Night on May 3, taking place at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

“RDR” targeted a high-profile opponent, even calling out top contenders like Khamzat Chimaev after securing back-to-back submission wins early in his UFC tenure. Though he didn’t land the matchup he hoped for, he’s content with the direction his career is taking.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, De Ridder admitted that Nickal wasn’t his first choice for an opponent, as he had his eyes set on a top-five ranked fighter. However, the former two-division ONE Championship champion acknowledged the significance of a victory over the undefeated prospect.

“I’m happy with the fight,” Reinier De Ridder said. “It’s a good one. It’s not what I asked for. I asked for a top-five guy, but I think he’s a top-five name, right? He’s a very popular guy here in the States, and yeah, I’m happy with the matchup. See if we can make him grapple a bit, see if we can make him wrestle a bit. I think whatever happens, I might steal the spotlight in this one.”

Bo Nickal is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Paul Craig at UFC 309 last November. Despite his elite wrestling background, the American opted to forgo takedowns and relied entirely on his striking.

Now, De Ridder is eager to see Nickal fully utilize his most dangerous asset in their upcoming matchup.

“I feel my wrestling is pretty decent, as well. I really want to make him wrestle this time. Last fight he was just sticking and moving, throwing that wild overhand of his, and trying to make sure he didn’t wrestle at all. But let’s make it a wrestling match this time, see if we can get him to shoot a couple of times, see if I can get his neck.”

“RDR” is fresh off a dominant first-round submission victory over Kevin Holland at UFC 311 in January. After leaving ONE Championship, De Ridder made his UFC debut last year, securing a submission win against Gerald Meerschaert at a Fight Night event in November.

  • Bo Nickal Gives Honest Review Of The Apex After UFC Mocked Criticism During Latest Fight Night

Bo Nickal Gives Honest Review Of The Apex After UFC Mocked Criticism During Latest Fight Night

The UFC attempted a victory lap of sorts after the latest event at the Apex delivered plenty of highlights, but it would seem the fighters themselves are still less than thrilled by the prospect of competing inside the low-capacity venue.

The Apex in Las Vegas emerged as a savior during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the building designed as a temporary solution to combat travel restrictions. To the frustration of many fans and pundits, the venue is still being utilized for UFC Fight Nights four years on from the promotion’s return to arenas.

The UFC and its higher-ups took pride in frequently reminding fans that they were the first sporting organization to resume action after the virus’ outbreak, but they’ve been widely criticized for being the last to return to pre-lockdown conditions.

And recent comments from UFC executives made it clear that the Apex is not going anywhere, with the promotion favoring the financial benefits that derive from avoiding a full calendar on the road.

The debate surrounding the Apex recently reared its head again during the broadcast of UFC Vegas 104. After a card branded lackluster on paper delivered a high number of finishes, the UFC’s social media team took the opportunity to mock critics of the Apex.

During an appearance on Monday’s episode of The Ariel Helwani Show on Uncrowned, however, middleweight prospect Bo Nickal backed up what many have been saying regarding the Apex experience.

“I fought twice in the Apex and I would say that the virality of the moment is like a fraction of what it would be with the crowd,” Nickal said. “I think of some big fights in the Apex, Francis-Stipe, Poirier-Hooker…imagine those fights with the crowd.

“It doesn’t even feel close to the real arena and a real crowd,” Nickal continued. “It feels like you’re just going out there to spar. I think that it affects the competition.”

The UFC’s next Apex card takes place on April 5, when entertaining featherweights Josh Emmett and Lerone Murphy will do battle in a bout many wish was taking place in front of a full crowd.

Before that, the promotion is scheduled for returns to England and Mexico. The UFC has visited just two new countries since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, staging cards in Saudi Arabia and France.

  • Reinier de Ridder vs. Bo Nickal Confirmed For UFC Des Moines On May 3

Reinier de Ridder vs. Bo Nickal Confirmed For UFC Des Moines On May 3

Undefeated UFC middleweight prospect Bo Nickal has his latest assignment in the calendar.

Nickal (7-0) has won all four of his Octagon appearances to date since a pair of victories on Dana White’s Contender Series to net a contract back in 2023.

After submissions of Jamie Pickett and Cody Brundage sandwiched a knockout of Val Woodburn, the three-time NCAA Division I national champion and three-time Big Ten Conference champion out of Pennsylvania State University was taken to the scorecards for the first time.

Nevertheless, the 29-year-old got the nod over Paul Craig at UFC 309 last November, and he now has his first opportunity at ranked opposition this year.

The UFC confirmed this week that Bo Nickal will co-headline the UFC Fight Night in Des Moines on May 3, sharing the cage with #13-ranked middleweight contender Reinier de Ridder (19-2).

News of the booking was first reported by Sporting News’ Val Dewar.

De Ridder, too, is yet to taste defeat on mixed martial arts’ biggest stage. The Dutchman has won both of his UFC contests since jumping ship from ONE Championship, where he had reigned as a two-division champion.

After a somewhat lackluster debut win over Gerald Meerschaert in late 2024, de Ridder opened his account for 2025 with a rapid first-round submission of Kevin Holland at UFC 311 in Los Angeles.

With this addition, the current fights expected to take place at UFC Des Moines on May 3 are as follows:

    • Cory Sandhagen vs. Deiveson Figueiredo (bantamweight)
    • Reinier de Ridder vs. Bo Nickal (middleweight)
    • Marina Rodriguez vs. Gillian Robertson (women’s strawweight)
    • Jeremy Stephens vs. Mason Jones (lightweight)
    • Marlon Vera vs. Mario Bautista (bantamweight)
    • Yana Santos vs. Miesha Tate (women’s bantamweight)
    • Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Daniel Rodriguez (welterweight)
    • Montel Jackson vs. Daniel Marcos (bantamweight)
    • JeongYeong Lee vs. Trevor Peek (featherweight)
    • Cameron Smotherman vs. Serhiy Sidey (bantamweight)
    • Junior Tafa vs. Tuco Toccos (heavyweight)
    • Azamat Bekoev vs. Ryan Loder (middleweight)

Bo Nickal Gives Brutal Response To Callout From UFC Vegas 102 Winner: ‘Fans Say I Can’t Fight Cans Anymore…’

Andre Petroski feels he’s ready for a step up in competition after his victory over Rodolfo Vieira at UFC Vegas 102.

Unfortunately for him, the man he chose to call out, Bo Nickal, doesn’t share the same sentiment regarding the idea of a fight between the two of them.

“I’d love to get an easy check but the fans say I can’t fight cans anymore,” Nickal wrote on X after being called out at UFC Vegas 102.

Andre Petroski Calls Out Bo Nickal At UFC Vegas 102, Gets Rejected Quickly

The first round between Petroski and Vieira was slow. In fact, the two combined for only about 10 punches in the entire five-minute span. The American had more control of the pacing in the first round, but his Brazilian opponent picked up his pace and took back control in the second.

Petroski brought out more powerful shots in the third, nabbing him the win on all three judges’ scorecards.

The victor then used his post-fight promo time to call out rising star Nickal.

Nickal was quick to jump on social media and reject the fight proposal, referring to Petroski as a “can.”

Petroski has won three straight now, having also bested Josh Fremd and Dylan Budka over the past year.

Meanwhile, Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert Vieira is now 3-3 in his last six after starting his pro career 7-0.

  • Chael Sonnen On Khamzat Chimaev vs. Bo Nickal: ‘Can’t Keep These Guys Separated Forever’

Chael Sonnen has pushed the idea of having the UFC book a fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Bo Nickal in the not-too-distant future.

Chimaev faced Robert Whittaker at UFC 308 last October, winning the fight via face-crank submission in the first round. As a result, it earned “Borz” another Performance of the Night award for his efforts.

Nickal, meanwhile, is still learning the world of MMA in his early career, as he holds an undefeated record and is coming off a decision win over Paul Craig at UFC 309. Despite that, though, Sonnen thinks the fight must happen as their paths are going to eventually cross.

”I’ve got to get Bo Nickal and Chimaev,” Sonnen said during an interview with Nickal himself. “I can’t keep these guys separated forever. We’re told that we don’t get to see this fight because of the discrepancy in the rankings. Now, Chimaev has put himself in a spot to go fight for a title.

“Those two have been aligned from Jump Street. … Chimaev’s undefeated, Bo’s undefeated. Chimaev’s good with the wrestling, Bo’s good with the wrestling, Chimaev’s got a bunch of fans, that’s up and coming as a future title contender. Check, check, and check for Bo. I don’t know why we’re keeping them apart when we got guys under contract. Make the fight.”

  • Bo Nickal On Abandoning Wrestling At UFC 309: ‘A Great Step In The Right Direction’

Bo Nickal On Abandoning Wrestling At UFC 309: ‘A Great Step In The Right Direction’

Bo Nickal secured another impressive victory earlier this month at UFC 309, defeating Paul Craig on the main card at Madison Square Garden.

This win added to Nickal’s growing undefeated record, which now includes four victories under the UFC banner. His previous finishes came against Jamie Pickett, Val Woodburn, and Cody Brundage.

While many expected Nickal to lean on his world-class wrestling skills in the Craig fight, he surprised fans by focusing on his striking. This decision drew mixed reactions from fight fans, some of whom questioned his strategy.

However, Nickal defended his approach during an appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, expressing joy about his performance.

“I think that this last fight, even though people didn’t love the performance, was a great step in the right direction,” Nickal said. “I dominated a veteran — a guy who has 26 fights — for three straight rounds just using striking. I didn’t even use my biggest asset. I think people now are saying, ‘Oh, Bo, he can’t wrestle,’ this or that. Bro, trust me, I can wrestle.”

Nickal reassured fans that his wrestling remains a key weapon in his arsenal and promised to continue dominating opponents in future fights.

  • Bo Nickal Reveals ‘Only Regret’ From UFC 309 Win Over Paul Craig

Bo Nickal Reveals ‘Only Regret’ From UFC 309 Win Over Paul Craig

Despite being pleased with his performance this past weekend, UFC middleweight prospect Bo Nickal does wish he did one thing differently against Paul Craig.

Nickal extended his undefeated record in the UFC and professional mixed martial arts as a whole at Saturday’s UFC 309 pay-per-view, where he got the better of experienced veteran Paul Craig on the main card.

The formerly ranked light heavyweight and middleweight was expected to mark the toughest test of Nickal’s career to date owing to his renowned jiu-jitsu ability, but that ultimately didn’t rear its head on fight night.

Instead, the submission specialist and the decorated wrestler fought out three lackluster rounds on the feet, much to the dismay of the New York crowd in attendance.

But despite boos raining down on the Octagon following his unanimous decision win, Nickal has been firmly defending his display and expressing his joy at how he was able to emerge victorious from a striking battle.

However, the three-time NCAA Division I national champion and three-time Big Ten Conference champion out of Pennsylvania State University does have one regret, albeit a small one…

“I was winning the striking and I was happy to get experience in the cage doing something I’ve never done before,” Nickal wrote on X. “My only (small) regret is not being more aggressive in the 3rd round after I hurt him. I need to build a better system to attack when my opponent is hurt.”

Having added Craig’s name to a list of defeated UFC opponents that also includes Cody Brundage, Val Woodburn, and Jamie Pickett, Nickal has moved closer to breaking through into contention at 185 pounds.

But with his latest win leaving a lot to be desired in the eyes of some fans and pundits, it would appear that the 28-year-old still has some work to do before mixing it up with the division’s best.

  • Paul Craig Saw ‘Progress’ In UFC 309 Loss To Bo Nickal: ‘Every Setback Is Just Setup For A Comeback’

Paul Craig Saw ‘Progress’ In UFC 309 Loss To Bo Nickal: ‘Every Setback Is Just Setup For A Comeback’

UFC middleweight Paul Craig hasn’t lost confidence despite falling to another defeat this past weekend.

Craig marked the latest challenge for undefeated prospect Bo Nickal at Saturday’s UFC 309 pay-per-view. The Scotsman joined the likes of Cody Brundage and Val Woodburn on the list of those unable to blemish the decorated wrestler’s MMA record.

The two grappling specialists remained standing throughout their three-round affair, with Nickal edging a striking-only contest that frustrated the crowd in attendance at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

For Craig, the result marked his third straight loss, leaves him 1-5 across his last six, and has pushed his middleweight record to a negative 1-4.

But although things may not have gone his way on fight night, “Bearjew” remains in good spirits and happy with the “progress” he felt was in display.

“Saturday night didn’t go as I envisioned, but every setback is just a setup for a comeback,” Craig wrote. “Progress is happening, and my resilience is my fuel. Here’s to the relentless pursuit of greatness! #bearjew #bearjewjitsu#setbacks #comebacks

Craig, a formerly ranked light heavyweight contender, initially made a strong start at 185 pounds when he knocked out Andre Muniz. But a main event loss to Brendan Allen and brutal knockout setback at the hands of Caio Borralho left him out of the top 15.

Having fallen short of having his hand raised again, “Bearjew” is in desperate need of a rebound result next time out. And judging by his post-fight statement, he’s evidently confident that he’s moved in a good direction toward achieving that.

  • Chael Sonnen Says UFC Won’t Struggle To Find Willing Opponents For Bo Nickal After Latest Performance

Chael Sonnen Says UFC Won’t Struggle To Find Willing Opponents For Bo Nickal After Latest Performance

With his fourth win inside the Octagon, Bo Nickal continued to climb up the middleweight ladder on Saturday night at UFC 309 whilst remaining undefeated. Despite this, his latest outing was the first to raise some concerns regarding his current level.

The 28-year old rising star went the distance with Scotland’s Paul Craig in the first decision win of his career. Though he won all three rounds against his toughest opponent to date, it was the manner of the performance that many took issue with as the two grappling specialists engaged in a lacklustre striking bout for the entire duration.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing that Nickal showed that he could win the fight without using his wrestling but with Craig not being known for his striking skills either, it wasn’t a particularly impressive display. Chael Sonnen believes that this performance will remove the fear factor and mystique surrounding Nickal during his time in the promotion.

We see it happen time and time again where an exciting prospect comes up against their toughest test and is shown to not be an unbeatable phenom just quite yet. Though Sonnen admitted that Nickal needs time before making the next step up, he believes that the UFC will no longer have any problems matching him after he looked far more beatable than we’ve seen in the past.

“Those days are done, for now, they’re put on hold. The conversation that nobody has called out Bo Nickal, that will change. Come Monday, people will be calling for him. The idea that Bo is the boogeyman in the closet that Dana and Hunter just cannot find opponents for because there is so much respect put on Bo’s name mixed with fear… that is gone. They will find opponents for Bo very quickly now and it doesn’t need to be that way.”

  • Bo Nickal Unhappy With Commentary Of UFC 309 Win: To Hear DC Say, ‘He’s Not Ready For Khamzat…’

Bo Nickal Unhappy With Commentary Of UFC 309 Win: To Hear DC Say, ‘He’s Not Ready For Khamzat…’

UFC middleweight prospect Bo Nickal has continued to defend his performance on Saturday night — this time against what he’s branded “disappointing” commentary.

Nickal extended his perfect professional MMA and UFC records on the main card of this past weekend’s UFC 309 pay-per-view, getting past his toughest test to date in the form of Paul Craig.

But the American wrestling specialist wasn’t tested in the Scotsman’s domain, with the three-round affair playing out entirely on the feet. That led to a less than exciting contest, which the crowd inside Madison Square Garden let the two fighters know.

Boos rained down following the fight and throughout Nickal’s Octagon interview, and they were only amplified when the undefeated 185lber dismissed the fans’ complaints and expressed joy at how he performed.

As it turns out, the paying audience weren’t the only ones with an opinion that Nickal thoroughly disagreed with…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWBveUtLBMo

During an appearance on Monday’s episode of The Ariel Helwani Show on Uncrowned, Nickal took issue with the cageside commentators after watching back his victory over “Bearjew” in New York City.

Nickal appeared particularly frustrated by Daniel Cormier apparently writing off his chances against Khamzat Chimaev based off that performance.

“The commentary and just hearing the way that they were looking at the fight, it made me feel like they didn’t know what was going on as much,” Nickal said. “Because anybody that I’ve talked to that are people that I trust and shoot straight with me were like, ‘Dude, you shut that guy out. Domination. It was a flawless fight.’ Then to hear ‘DC’ say things like, ‘Oh, he’s not ready for Khamzat [Chimaev]’ — I think he was trying to be respectful but also maybe set me down a peg. It was just weird to hear.

“It was a little disappointing to hear those comments from people that I respect a lot. What was going on in these guys’ heads? It just makes me feel like they don’t know what was happening,” Nickal continued. “It’s confusing because I’m like, ‘Wait, what? How do you get that from that?’ I didn’t even really get touched. It’s so crazy.”

Cormier wasn’t the only one sharing that sentiment — and getting pushback from Nickal soon after.

Former welterweight title challenger and middleweight contender Darren Till suggested the same in a more colorful fashion on social media. The decorated wrestler gave a short and sweet reply, attaching a GIF of “The Gorilla’s” knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal in 2019.

  • Chael Sonnen Blames Bo Nickal’s Team For Frustrating UFC 309 Performance: ‘Somebody Got A Hold Of Him!’

Chael Sonnen Blames Bo Nickal’s Team For Frustrating UFC 309 Performance: ‘Somebody Got A Hold Of Him!’

Bo Nickal remained undefeated at UFC 309 and earned his biggest win to date but these stats alone do not tell the full story of his performance at Madison Square Garden. The undefeated 185-pounder faced off with Scotland’s Paul Craig in a fight that many believed would be Nickal’s toughest test to date.

The biggest talking point heading into this match-up was whether the wrestling specialist would attempt to play to his strengths against Scotland’s Craig who is an incredibly dangerous submission artist. In the end, we didn’t get to find out how they would have matched up in this area because fight fans instead got a fairly uneventful striking match over three rounds which Nickal won without landing too many significant shots.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel in the aftermath of the UFC’s return to New York, Chael Sonnen voiced his frustrations about the fight and Nickal’s approach in particular. He believes that someone must have told the 28-year old to stay clear of Craig’s grappling and though he ended up winning the striking battle and therefore the fight, Sonnen took a lot of issue with this considering his wrestling credentials.

“My problem with it and my gripe is that you have a four-time world champion… doesn’t do one damn bit of wrestling because somebody got a hold of him. One of his trainers or his training partners sat him down and said, ‘You’re not ready to go to the ground with the guy.’ Well how the F would we know? How in the F we would know that now?”

Sonnen went on to reference Georges St-Pierre and how he would game plan for opponents in comparison. He said that the former welterweight and middleweight champion would look at his three best skill sets and rank them in order to strategize how he would approach the fight and what his back-up plans would be.

“The Bad Guy” believes that Nickal gave Craig too much respect by not sticking to what he does best, stating that this isn’t something that the middleweight prospect did when he faced elite wrestlers so would he start doing it now.

“That is nothing that Bo has ever done. He didn’t show Gabe Dean that respect, he didn’t show Miles Martin that respect, he did not show David Taylor that respect and he refuses to take down, a four-time world champion refuses to use one bit of wrestling against a guy that’s never had a wrestling match. That is because of somebody in his trusted inner circle.”

  • Bo Nickal Doubles Down On Defense Of UFC 309 Performance: ‘This Fight Was Picture-Perfect’

Bo Nickal Doubles Down On Defense Of UFC 309 Performance: ‘This Fight Was Picture-Perfect’

UFC middleweight prospect Bo Nickal continues to push back on suggestions he underperformed this past weekend.

Nickal was among those to have their hand raised on the main card of Saturday’s UFC 309 pay-per-view. But unlike his previous Octagon outings — all of which came by way of knockout or submission — the American didn’t draw a positive reaction from the crowd.

The audience in attendance at Madison Square Garden made their displeasure known throughout Nickal’s three-round contest with formerly ranked middleweight and light heavyweight contender Paul Craig.

After the decorated wrestling specialist got the nod after 15 minutes of largely forgettable striking, he was heavily booed during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. And they rained down even heavier when Nickal defended the display and expressed how happy he was with the win.

During his post-fight press conference at MSG, Nickal shared the same sentiment, even going as far as to call his performance in New York City “picture-perfect.”

“Definitely, it’s way better for me and my development,” Nickal said. “If you look at my cage time and what I had before this, I over-doubled it, for sure. That’s something that for me I’ve really cornered myself with this reputation of a guy who finishes them and destroys them – because that’s when the expectation is set. My expectation is to compete to the best of my ability at 100 percent effort.

“It’s not anything to do with the result. It doesn’t matter: decisions, submissions, knockouts. I’m definitely not disappointed with this result. I was way more disappointed with my last fight and I subbed the guy,” Nickal continued. “This fight, for me, was picture-perfect.”

With the result, Nickal has moved to a perfect 4-0 in the UFC and 7-0 overall as a professional mixed martial artist.

The three-time NCAA Division I national champion and three-time Big Ten Conference champion out of Pennsylvania State University will now look ahead to his first assignment of 2025, as he edges closer to putting a number next to his name at 185 pounds.

‘Khamzat Kills Bo’ – Fans React As Bo Nickal’s UFC 309 Decision Over Paul Craig Draws ‘Overrated’ Chants Inside MSG

New Yorkers are unafraid to show their honest opinions, and that resulted in a harsh reaction toward Bo Nickal as he took a decision win over Paul Craig at UFC 309.

The fight was ultimately quiet throughout the 15 minutes. The first round could have fallen either way, as Nickal looked to stand in front of Craig and land low kicks. “Bearjew,” however, checked those and landed kicks of his own.

The second frame saw the American wrestler land the harder strikes, though the round felt quieter than the first. The third stanza saw Nickal stun Craig on a couple of occasions but not follow up on it. That round also saw a brutal reaction from the MSG crowd, bringing down boos and chants of “Overrated!”

The undefeated prospect ultimately swept the judges’ scorecards for the win.

This marked Nickal’s fourth bout in the UFC after winning a pair of fights on Dana White’s Contender Series. His run in the Octagon thus far has seen him score finishes of Jamie Pickett, Val Woodburn, and Cody Brundage.

Craig, meanwhile, has now lost three straight and five of his last six.

UFC 309 takes place on Saturday night, and MMA News is here to bring you the final faceoffs from the ceremonial weigh-ins!

The upcoming pay-per-view event at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City provides a chance for UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones to record his first successful title defense.

After capturing the gold in March 2023 by quickly submitting Ciryl Gane, “Bones” is next tasked with stalling Stipe Miocic’s ambitions of a return to the 265-pound mountaintop in what will mark the Ohio native’s first outing in three and a half years.

The stakes will also be high in the co-main event, which will see former lightweight champ Charles Oliveira look to secure another shot at regaining the crown by once again getting the better of Michael Chandler.

Elsewhere on the UFC 309 card, middleweight prospect Bo Nickal, rising flyweight Karine Silva, the always entertaining Mauricio Ruffy and former champion Chris Weidman have their next assignments inside the Octagon.

Ahead of the event, 25 of the 26 fighters successfully made weight, with James Llontop’s 1.2-pound miss of the 165-pound catchweight limit marking the sole indiscretion on the scale. Nevertheless, every fight is intact, and all that remains on Friday is for the athletes to face off one final time at the UFC 309 ceremonial weigh-ins!
