Gable Steveson Shuts Out Alexandr Romanov in RAF Debut

About a month-and-a-half before he makes his UFC debut, Gable Steveson found success in his RAF debut, scoring a shutout, technical fall victory over UFC and PFL veteran Alexandr Romanov.

Steveson’s athleticism proved to be a problem for Romanov, with Steveson using a takedown and turn to quickly rack up a 4-0 lead in the first period. The action was briefly halted after Romanov appeared to suffer an arm injury. Romanov continued the bout, with Steveson up 5-0 at the end of the first.

Steveson continued his pace into the second, scoring a point on a step-out before adding two more with a takedown. Steveson soon rolled and executed a gutwrench to take a 10-0 win.

Steveson is a former Olympic and Pan-American Games gold medalist and is the former NCAA All-American and national champion wrestler from the University of Minnesota. Steveson, a protege of Jon Jones, will make his UFC debut at UFC 329 in July, taking on Elisha Ellison.

Romanov is now 0-2 in RAF. He debuted at RAF 02, losing to Mason Parris.

UFC Announces Signing Of Gable Steveson, Will Debut At UFC 329

In a move that has been expected for a while, the UFC have signed former Olympic gold medalist and NCAA wrestling champion Gable Steveson.

The signing was made official in an announcement during the UFC 327 broadcast. Steveson was in the crowd for the event, seated next to former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Jones has been overseeing Steveson’s transition to full-time Mixed Martial Arts.

The UFC broadcast also announced that Steveson will make his UFC debut at UFC 329 on July 11, during the UFC’s International Fight Week.

Former Olympic, NCAA Champion Gable Steveson Signs With UFC

Steveson was a standout wrestler, becoming a four-time conference champion and five-time NCAA-Division I All-American while wrestling at the University of Minnesota. Steveson won the NCAA championship twice and made the finals a third time.

Steveson, in addition, was a gold medalist at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

After failed stints with the WWE and Buffalo Bills, Steveson made the move to professional MMA in 2025. He has scored three first-round finishes so far.

Steveson is also signed to RAF and is expected to debut on May 30 at RAF 9, taking on Alexandr Romanov.

Gable Steveson Headlines RAF 09 Against UFC Heavyweight Veteran, Colby Covington Faces Chris Weidman In Co-Main Event

Real American Freestyle continues to build momentum with another stacked lineup, as RAF 09 promises a mix of elite wrestling pedigree and recognizable MMA names.

Set to take place on May 30 at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas, the event will be headlined by Gable Steveson’s highly anticipated debut.

Gable Steveson Set For RAF Debut Against Alexandr Romanov

The Olympic gold medalist is set to face Alexandr Romanov in his first appearance under the RAF banner. Steveson recently signed a multi-fight deal with the promotion as he continues to balance his transition into mixed martial arts while staying active in wrestling.

At just 25 years old, Steveson has already generated significant buzz, not only for his decorated amateur background but also for his explosive start in combat sports. He currently holds a 3-0 record in professional MMA and also scored a 15-second knockout win over Billy Swanson at DBX 4 under hybrid rules.

Meanwhile, Romanov brings significant experience into the matchup, holding a professional record of 21-4. During his time in the UFC, he went 7-3 inside the Octagon before parting ways with the promotion in 2024. He is also scheduled to face Rodrigo Nascimento this weekend at PFL Chicago.

“King Kong” is no stranger to the RAF either, having made his promotional debut last October at RAF 2, where he suffered a decision loss to Mason Parris.

Colby Covington vs. Chris Weidman Booked For RAF 09 Co-Main Event

In the co-main event of RAF 09, Colby Covington will square off against former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in what marks another high-profile matchup on the card.

Covington enters the bout with momentum, having already picked up multiple wins under the RAF banner this year. “Chaos” picked a lopsided win over Dillon Danis at RAF 07 last month.

Meanwhile, Weidman makes his promotional debut after stepping away from active UFC competition, bringing his own credentials as a former champion and accomplished wrestler.

  • Gable Steveson Teases UFC Signing ‘Any Day Now’

Gable Steveson Teases UFC Signing ‘Any Day Now’

Gable Steveson continues to generate buzz around his transition to mixed martial arts, and a potential move to the UFC now appears closer than ever.

The Olympic gold medalist has made a strong start to his MMA journey, delivering a string of dominant performances in a short span. Still early in his career, Steveson has already shown flashes of a well-rounded skill set, combining his elite wrestling with improving striking.

The budding heavyweight prospect’s latest outing in February, where he scored a first-round knockout against Hugo Lezama, added to the hype, as he battled through adversity before securing another finish.

While many expected him to shift fully into MMA, Steveson recently signed with Real American Freestyle (RAF) to remain active in wrestling. The move briefly raised questions about his immediate plans, but the 25-year-old quickly clarified that his long-term focus remains unchanged.

Gable Steveson Confirms UFC Talks Progressing

During a recent interview with The Schmo, Gable Steveson made it clear that a UFC opportunity could be right around the corner.

“I got a couple of matches with RAF,” Steveson said. “I told everybody I’m a full-time mixed martial artist, and I would love to keep doing that. But I got good news, any day now.”

Despite returning to wrestling, Steveson views it as a way to sharpen his strengths rather than a shift in direction. His ultimate goal remains firmly set on reaching the top of the UFC.

“I’m doing the RAF to show people that I can still wrestle,” he explained. “I’ll show people that I’m great at wrestling, I’ll show people I’m one of the best heavyweights of all time. But the UFC title is more important to me.”

Steveson made his MMA debut last September and has quickly built a perfect 3-0 record, with all three victories coming via first-round finishes. The Indiana native also scored a blistering 15-second knockout over Billy Swanson while competing under the Dirty Boxing banner.

  • Gable Steveson Shuts Down UFC Hall of Famer Over Jon Jones Criticism: ‘He’s Perfect’

Gable Steveson Shuts Down UFC Hall of Famer Over Jon Jones Criticism: ‘He’s Perfect’

Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson has defended Jon Jones, calling the UFC legend “perfect” and backing their working relationship.

The 25-year-old dismissed Daniel Cormier’s concerns about having Jon Jones as his coach. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling is 3-0 in his MMA career, with all three wins coming via first-round knockout under Jones’ guidance.

Cormier recently questioned whether Jones could provide the focused coaching Steveson needs to reach his potential. Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, the former two-division UFC champion expressed doubts about his former rival’s ability to serve as a primary coach.

“I believe he has a real chance to be a world champion,” Cormier said. “I believe there are some factors that may slow down [that trajectory] — his coach is Jon Jones. As long as he lets the other coaches coach him, yes. But if Jon is actually coaching him, I don’t know.”

    Gable Steveson Praises Jones’ Mentorship

The 25-year-old wrestler responded to the criticism by offering a strong defense of Jones’ coaching abilities. Steveson emphasized the value of learning from someone widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history.

“My relationship with him is everything,” Steveson told MMA Fighting. “I don’t think he does [get enough credit]. I think a lot of people overshadow [his abilities] with a lot of things with just fighting and a lot of the things he has going on. His mentorship is the best thing that we can have.”

Steveson described Jones as the ideal coach for his transition into mixed martial arts.

“He’s the best fighter of all-time leading a new guy to maybe be that person also. It’s a one of a kind opportunity and I’m all ears. I’m a sponge. Just soaking in all the knowledge that I can,” he said.

    Jones’ Coaching Approach

The Olympic champion directly addressed concerns about Jones’ commitment and professionalism as a coach. Steveson painted a picture of a dedicated mentor who consistently shows up prepared to work.

“He’s perfect. He’s everything you want in a coach. He shows up on time. He’s ready to work. He’s ready to work overtime, also,” Steveson said. “So the narrative of him being not there, his ego’s there — it’s non-existent with him.”

Steveson is set to make his Real American Freestyle debut at the wrestling organization’s ninth event on May 30.

Steveson enters tonight’s fight at 2-0 with two first-round finishes to start his professional MMA career. The Olympic gold medalist made his debut with a 98-second TKO of Braden Peterson at LFA 217 last September, then followed it up with a 24-second knockout in his second outing.

Lezama, meanwhile, brings a 11-3 record and more than a decade of professional experience to the matchup. The Mexican heavyweight has a high finishing rate, making him Steveson’s toughest test to date.

The stakes are high for Steveson tonight. He’s said that the UFC has been in regular contact and that a dominant performance in Mexico could seal the deal for a signing. Steveson has been vocal about targeting a spot on the rumored UFC White House card on June 14 if he moves to 3-0 with a big knockout tonight.

  • Gable Steveson Calls Out Pereira, Aspinall, Gane

Gable Steveson Calls Out Pereira, Aspinall, Gane

Gable Steveson isn’t waiting for a UFC contract to start calling out the biggest names in the heavyweight division. In an interview with Submission Radio ahead of his third professional MMA fight on February 19 at MFL 3 in Mexico, the Olympic gold medalist made it clear he believes he already belongs with the division’s elite.

“Those three big names — Pereira, Aspinall, Gane — I can compete with most definitely. Especially right now,” Steveson told host Denis Shkuratov. “But if you keep giving me time, the gap will keep coming in — with the youthfulness that I have, with those guys being a little older. Tom is a little older, but Pereira — really older. Gane — really older. As time goes on, you don’t get any faster.”

It’s a bold claim from a fighter who is just 2-0 as a professional, but Steveson has never lacked confidence. The two-time NCAA Division I National Champion and 2020 Olympic gold medalist has been on an accelerated path toward the UFC since making his MMA debut at LFA 217 in September, where he finished Braden Peterson in 98 seconds.

    Steveson Embraces the “Savior” Label

The heavyweight division has been in a state of uncertainty, with Jon Jones flirting with retirement and the top contenders jockeying for position. Many fans and media members have started attaching the “savior” label to Steveson, and while he deflects the title, he doesn’t shy away from the expectations that come with it.

“It’s a one of a kind thing when a lot of people put your name as the savior. But I’m young. I’m hungry. I’m ready to work, and I work hard every single day to make that possible,” Steveson said. “The next version of Gable you’ll see is even better than the one you saw last time.”

When asked about the pressure of being called a future UFC champion before even fighting in the promotion, Steveson pointed to his track record of performing under the brightest spotlights.

“That pressure has been put on Steveson and I feel like I’ve directed all the things you could possibly say about: can he do it or can he not? I feel like I’ve proved everyone wrong every single time,” he said. “Pressure makes diamonds, and the diamond in the rough is found now. It’s just me.”

White House Card and Getting Paid

Steveson also made his pitch for the UFC’s rumored White House card, an event he’s been vocal about wanting to be part of for months.

“It would be an honor to be on the White House card. I would love to be the face of it — Olympic champion from USA coming to support the American company, the UFC, and kind of grow myself in that area,” Steveson said. “But if it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, the world keeps going on. Whether I’m on the White House card or the next card or the one before that, people will watch.”

As for navigating the attention that comes with his rapid rise, Steveson offered a motto that captures his approach: “If they’re going to love you one day, they’re going to hate you the next day — just make sure you get paid both times.”

Steveson faces Hugo Lezama, a 14-fight veteran, on Thursday at MFL 3 in Mexico. A dominant performance could be the final step before the UFC call he’s been working toward.

  • Gable Steveson’s MMA Mount Rushmore Has a Surprising Omission

Gable Steveson’s MMA Mount Rushmore Has a Surprising Omission

Gable Steveson has named his Mount Rushmore of MMA heavyweights, and some fight fans on social media are outraged by one omission.

“My Mount Rushmore of heavyweights would probably be, Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones, and I always have to throw Brock Lesnar in.”

Fedor Emelianenko’s omission is a choice, and has caused a stir on MMA Twitter. Many consider The Last Emperor to be the G.O.A.T., Steveson rationalized the decision by pointing to Lesnar’s undeniable results at the box office. “When Brock showed up, people watched and people cared.”

He called Lesnar one of the best combat sports athletes of all time, and added, “What an honor it was to be next to him in the Gopher wrestling room and in many other things. What a great time we’ve had.”

    Gable Steveson on Jon Jones

Steveson spoke very highly of Jon Jones, who he considers a mentor and a really close friend. “I grew up watching the guy. He kind of watched my Olympic career. To kind of be friends now, it’s great. An amazing dude. He puts forth his best effort with me. When he comes into the gym, he’s always on me, and however long it takes to get something correct, he’s there the whole time.”

“Jon Jones is a legend in a great sport. A lot of people want to hate him one day and want to love him one day, but you can’t deny — he’s the one of one.”

    Gable Steveson’s Next MMA Fight

Gable Steveson is 2-0 in professional MMA, with an upcoming third fight against Hugo Lezama at Mexican Fight League 3 on February 19, 2026.

The 2020 Olympic gold medalist, two-time NCAA Division I national champion, two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner, four-time Big Ten champion, and five-time All-American at University of Minnesota, won his professional MMA debut against Braden Peterson at LFA 217 on September 12, 2025, and his second bout with a 24-second knockout in late 2025.

  • Gable Steveson: UFC Debut ‘Close,’ Jones Predicts Title in a Year

Gable Steveson: UFC Debut ‘Close,’ Jones Predicts Title in a Year

Gable Steveson says his jump to the UFC is approaching. The Olympic gold medalist told ESPN MMA’s Brett Okamoto that the promotion has been in regular contact and that his debut is “getting to that point where it’s close.”

“We’ve been in actually a lot of contact. I would say after every single fight, it’s a call,” Steveson said. “It’s all good messages. It’s all positive things, good energy. We talk on a great basis. So when the time is coming, it’s just when I want the time to come.”

Steveson (2-0 MMA) fights Hugo Lezama, a 14-fight veteran, on Thursday, February 19 in Mexico on the Mexico Fight League card. He says a dominant performance there could seal the deal.

“I think a big knockout next Thursday will make it perfect,” Steveson said. “Just be ready for all aspects of it. But I think that’ll be a big jump for me if I can go out there and dominate a guy with a lot of experience and make that next step.”

Jon Jones Predicts UFC Title Within One Year

Steveson trains alongside former UFC champion Jon Jones at Jackson Wink MMA, and Jones has a bold prediction for his teammate: UFC champion within 12 months.

“One year from now, UFC champion,” Steveson said, relaying Jones’s words. “I believe it because I got full confidence in myself. But with a guy like John kind of got in the way for me, I feel like the confidence just goes through the roof. The best thing about it is he sees me firsthand training with him and hitting the pads and going through all the motions. So, his word is gold with that.”

Steveson acknowledged the timeline might shift slightly. “And if it’s not next year, it’ll be soon after that. It just depends how the cards fall.”

    White House Card in Play

The UFC’s rumored White House card is on Steveson’s radar. As a U.S. Olympic champion, he believes there’s a natural fit.

“There’s got to be a place for a guy that can represent in America,” Steveson said. “I don’t think there’s one American champion right now besides [Gaethje]. But he’s kind of the interim. So if the White House happens for me, it happens for me. If it doesn’t, I keep moving on.”

A knockout win in Mexico would prompt a direct call for the spot. “Yeah, most definitely. I’ll call for it. I think it’s rightfully so,” Steveson said. “Especially if it’s a big knockout that happens next Thursday — it’d be my third in MMA, one in dirty boxing.”

    Heavyweight’s Missing Puzzle Pieces

Steveson sees opportunity in a heavyweight division he describes as having “a lot of missing puzzle pieces.” His approach remains measured despite the accelerated timeline.

“We’re still going slow, but slow in the heavyweight division is fast,” Steveson said. “I think with my potential, my speed, my technique, my durability, my endurance — everything and my wrestling included — is going to be a new thing for people to see.”

His striking development has surprised even himself. “I got lightning in my hands. You would have never guessed,” Steveson said. His last outing lasted 20 seconds — a knockout of an experienced, 220-pound opponent.

Whether Thursday’s fight goes the same way or runs the full 15 minutes, Steveson says he’s ready. “I’m going to give you hell for 15 minutes. If it goes 20 seconds, there’s nothing I can do about it.”

  • Gable Steveson would love to make UFC debut at White House next summer

Gable Steveson would love to make UFC debut at White House next summer

MMA newcomer and amateur wrestling legend Gable Steveson has admitted that he’d be very keen to make his UFC debut on next summer’s White House card, perhaps alongside training partner Jon Jones.

While his stint in WWE didn’t work out as planned, Gable Steveson still has a whole lot of potential when it comes to his future in combat sports. His amateur wrestling background is there for all to see and now, he’s entered the world of mixed martial arts, with the likes of Jon Jones helping to train him.

Many believe Gable Steveson will eventually end up in the UFC. When the man himself was asked about possibly entering the promotion at the White House next summer, he had the following to say.

Gable Steveson is open to UFC debut at White House

“Man, that’d be incredible,’ Steveson told MMA Fighting. “I try not to think too big, but sometimes it’s just big moments come and you can’t deny them, and I think having an Olympic champion, an American person, a guy that’s going to go out there and represent the White House on the biggest stage possible, it’s me. And I think it could be really nice.

“The fact that you even asked me, it is cool. It sent a chill on me.”

“I think having a Jon Jones vs. Alex Pereira live-in-the-flesh main event, Jon will be ready because I know he will, and he’ll be with me,” Steveson said. “So we’ll make sure resting is good, we’ll make sure everything else is good, and he’ll take care of the rest.”

“But I think in my terms, man, fantastic opportunity. To have me, being younger, saying that you can be on the same card — and not just any card, a White House card, that is a once in a lifetime [event] — with Jon Jones being the main event against Alex Pereira. I couldn’t even fathom. … It’s insane.”

“I would love to become a champion, and I know I have what it takes. Right now, do I have what it takes? Most definitely not. But I’m humble enough to say that. There’s no ego on my head that would put me in steps I’m not ready for.”

“This is just step one of getting ready for something that’s going to be a lot greater than this. And I know that time will come very fast.”

“It does wonders to my development, you know, but a lot of it is being all ears. You got to be all ears and have the head to be ready to learn and be able to go out there and be with guys like Jon Jones and Greg Jackson and Brandon Gibson.”

Steveson’s career was briefly halted by a 2019 sexual assault allegation, as well as stints with the WWE and the NFL’s Buffalo Bills between 2021 and 2024.

Swanson is 4-3 as a professional MMA fighter. He had most recently fought at BKFC 79 in August, getting stopped by Bear Hill.

Gable Steveson barely broke a sweat in his dominant MMA debut.

Although the Olympic gold medalist took a few leg kicks in the opening moments, he quickly secured a rapid single-leg takedown. Once on the mat, Steveson controlled the action with a mix of precise, punishing elbows and constant submission threats.

He ultimately ended the fight by rising and raining down a relentless barrage of punches, compelling the referee to stop the bout just 1:38 into the first round. Steveson was awarded Performance of the Night honors for his effort.

When Did Gable Steveson Win Olympic Gold?

Gable Steveson claimed the Olympic gold in freestyle wrestling (125kg) at the 2020 Tokyo Games, defeating Georgia’s Geno Petriashvili in the final showdown.

Shortly after, Steveson signed with WWE and made his professional wrestling debut at SummerSlam 2021. His stint with the promotion, however, was brief, as reports indicated he was released due to limited progress at WWE’s Performance Center.

The 25-year-old American also had a brief stint with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills on the defensive line. Unfortunately, his football aspirations didn’t materialize, leading to his release in August 2024. Steveson subsequently went back to the University of Minnesota to continue his wrestling career and bolster his achievements before ultimately turning his focus to MMA.

  • Chael Sonnen Steps In On Short Notice To Face Craig Jones At CJI 2 After Gable Steveson’s Withdrawal

Chael Sonnen Steps In On Short Notice To Face Craig Jones At CJI 2 After Gable Steveson’s Withdrawal

Chael Sonnen is reportedly making his return to the canvas.

Earlier this week, Gable Steveson withdrew from his scheduled grappling showdown against Craig Jones in the main event of CJI 2 this Sunday at the Thomas & Mack Center, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, due to a turf toe injury.

However, on Tuesday, Sonnen claimed on his YouTube channel that he had spoken with Jones and agreed to step in on short notice to face him this weekend, replacing the Olympic gold medalist.

On Thursday, combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani verified the former UFC light heavyweight challenger’s claims, reporting that Sonnen will indeed face the Australian grappling star. Helwani noted that “The Bad Guy” will be undertaking a whirlwind schedule, calling the first Real American Freestyle Wrestling event in Cleveland on Saturday before hopping on an early Sunday flight to Las Vegas to compete at CJI 2 that same evening.

Have Chael Sonnen And Craig Jones Competed Against Each Other Before?

Chael Sonnen and Craig Jones have a history on the mats, dating back to September 2017 when the BJJ champion secured a heel hook submission over Sonnen at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Openweight tournament.

Jones was last seen in action at CJI 1 in August 2024, submitting Gabi Garcia with a first-round rear-naked choke. His most recent defeat came in September 2022, when he narrowly lost on points to Kaynan Duarte at ADCC.

Meanwhile, Sonnen last competed in an exhibition boxing match against longtime UFC rival Anderson Silva in June 2024, which ended in a draw. “The Bad Guy” retired from MMA with a professional record of 30-18-1, concluding his career with a knockout loss to Lyoto Machida at Bellator 222 in June 2019.

Gable Steveson, Former Olympic Gold Medalist And NCAA Champion, Set To Make Pro MMA Debut

Another former Olympic champion will be joining the professional MMA world, as Gable Steveson is set to make his debut in the sport next month.

Steveson, who won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021, will be featured in the co-main event of LFA 217 on September 12, taking on Braden Peterson.

The MMA fight will also come just a couple of weeks following Steveson’s scheduled submission grappling debut. Steveson will compete against Craig Jones at the Craig Jones Invitational 2 on August 31.

Gable Steveson To Make Professional MMA Debut At LFA 217

Competing in wrestling for nearly all of his life, Steveson, who competed for the University of Minnesota, is perhaps one of the best NCAA wrestlers in modern history. He was a five-time NCAA Division-I All-American, a two-time national champion, a four-time Big Ten conference champion, and a two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner.

Steveson fell short of capturing the 2025 NCAA heavyweight national title this past March, falling short in the final seconds of his bout with Wyatt Hendrickson. The bout, the last of Steveson’s NCAA career, snapped a 70-bout win streak.

In addition to his freestyle wrestling Olympic gold and NCAA success, Steveson was a 2021 Pan-American champion, a 2017 U20 world champion, and a 2015 and 2016 U17 world champion.

Steveson’s career, however, was briefly halted in 2019 when he and a teammate were arrested and suspended from all team activities at Minnesota following accusations of sexual assault. Criminal charges were dropped at the end of the year due to a lack of evidence.

Steveson also halted his NCAA senior season after signing an NIL (Next In-Line) deal with the WWE in 2021, becoming the second Olympic gold medalist to be signed by the WWE, following 1996 Olympic gold winner Kurt Angle. Steveson’s appearances, however, were sporadic and he would be released in 2024.

Not long after his WWE release, Steveson, despite never playing football before, tried to make the roster of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. He would be released following the 2024 pre-season.

Peterson, Stevenson’s opponent, went 4-1 on the amateur MMA circuit this year, picking up an amateur super heavyweight title in the process. Peterson made his professional MMA debut in July, scoring a 14-second finish of Chris Thompson.

Olympic Champion Gable Steveson Eyes MMA Career After Training With Jon Jones

Jon Jones has had such a profound influence on Gable Steveson that it’s motivated him to pursue a career in MMA.

The Olympic gold medalist wrestler played a pivotal role as a training partner, helping “Bones” prepare for his third-round TKO victory over former champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, where he successfully defended his heavyweight title.

After witnessing firsthand the craft of one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, Steveson has become more determined than ever to embrace the art of blending disciplines as he looks ahead to his future in combat sports.

During an interview with MMA Fighting, the 24-year-old Indiana native shared that his time training alongside Jones gave him the confidence to envision himself thriving in the world of MMA.

“As I put the gloves on, I really like the feeling of going out there and mixing everything together from wrestling to boxing to kickboxing to jiu-jitsu and putting all the pieces together in one,” Steveson said. “That definitely put a huge spark in me to do MMA, too. Wherever the path leads me after this wrestling season is going to be great regardless, but the MMA thing, when I tell you it, definitely lit a fire under me. Being in that camp definitely put a big, big gas light and lit it really hard and burned the fumes in me.”

Steveson captured the Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 2020 Tokyo Games, besting Georgia’s Geno Petriashvili in the final.

Not long after, he was offered a WWE contract and made his professional wrestling debut at SummerSlam 2021. However, his time with the promotion was short-lived, as he was reportedly released due to insufficient progress at the WWE’s Performance Center.

Stepping into new territory, Steveson also dabbled in American football, joining the Buffalo Bills for the NFL pre-season. Unfortunately, his football venture didn’t pan out, leading to his release this past August.

  • Jon Jones Touts ‘Scary’ Training Partner From UFC 309 Camp As A Future Champion

Jon Jones Touts ‘Scary’ Training Partner From UFC 309 Camp As A Future Champion

Jon Jones has always surrounded himself with some of the best of the best in their chosen fields to help him in his career. During the time that he has spent at heavyweight, this means bringing in big bodies that can really push him physically day-in and day-out.

The heavyweight champion’s preparations in Albuquerque clearly paid off for him in his second fight in the weight class this past weekend. In the main event of UFC 309, he stopped the returning Stipe Miocic in the third round to defend his heavyweight title for the first time.

As seen in social media videos or the fight week build-up, two elite grapplers joined Jones for this camp, along with some of the boxers that he trained with. Standing side-by-side on the mats with Jones and elite grappler Gordon Ryan was the former Olympic gold medallist wrestler, Gable Steveson.

After becoming the youngest freestyle wrestler in his weight class to ever win Olympic gold having only recently turned 21-years old at the time, Steveson left Tokyo in 2021 with the world at his feet. There was a lot of talk as to whether he would move into MMA or professional wrestling and after brief stints in WWE and the NFL that didn’t work out, it looks like the Octagon could be in his future.

Jones spoke in his post-fight press conference about how Steveson showed that he had the passion and mentality to learn after offering to step-in for one of Jones’ injured sparring partners during a training session. He also referenced a video that caught the attention of fans on social media where Steveson shot in for a takedown and was hit by a knee from “Bones”.

“I kneed him in the face at one of his very first practices. He ate it, and he looked like a little kid who had just found a new toy.”

Jones believes that his teammate for this recent fight camp has all the tools he needs to succeed in MMA if he chooses to stay the course and develop his overall game. At just 24-years old, Steveson still has a lot of time to develop into a serious threat in MMA.

“He’s gonna be scary, he’s gonna be very scary when he decides to do MMA. He knows how to make men appear very weak, me being one of them. When he learns how to box and learns a little about jiu-jitsu, it’s a matter of if he’ll become a UFC champion, it’s when he’ll be a UFC champion. Whether he trains in Albuquerque with our family or finds a different team, whoever has him are going to be really blessed to have him.”

Jon Jones Hails Gable Steveson As A Future MMA Champion

Jon Jones recently lauded Olympic gold medalist freestyle wrestler Gable Steveson, proclaiming him a future champion in the realm of MMA.

“Bones” is preparing for the inaugural defense of his heavyweight title against former champion Stipe Miocic in the headline bout of UFC 309, set to take place on November 16 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Jones will enter the Octagon after a 20-month hiatus, having last fought when he claimed the heavyweight title by submitting Ciryl Gane in the first round at UFC 285 in March 2023. The 34-year-old New Yorker was initially set to face Miocic at UFC 295 last November, but he had to withdraw just two weeks prior to the bout due to a pectoral injury.

In preparation for his upcoming bout, “Bones” has recruited the expertise of two prominent figures, Steveson and former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker, to aid in his training. Earlier this week, several photos and videos surfaced, showcasing Jones sparring alongside Steveson and Parker at his longtime training base, the Jackson Wink MMA Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Steveson recently took to Instagram to share a training photo with Jones. In the post’s comments, “Bones” hailed the American wrestler as the future champion of the heavyweight MMA division.

“Future MMA heavyweight champion, mark my words.”

Jon Jones Nearly Lands Devastating Knee On Gable Steveson In UFC 309 Training

UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones is underway with his preparations for his long awaited return at UFC 309 in November.

“Bones” will be making the first defense of his title against the former champion Stipe Miocic in what is likely to be the final fight of his career. Jones has been able to build a small but closely knit team around him since moving up to heavyweight but in order to keep it fresh, he was seen getting some new looks in a recent video.

The former light heavyweight champion was seen working alongside Olympic gold medallist Gable Steveson who has hinted at competing in MMA in the past.

After winning gold in wrestling at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Steveson has tried his hand at professional wrestling and football but is clearly taking an interest in mixed martial arts. If this is going to be a potential career move for him, why not jump in at the deep end by grappling with the consensus greatest that MMA has ever seen.

Jon Jones Trains With Gable Steveson

In the multiple training videos posted by Jones on social media, one particular exchange nearly ends very badly for Steveson.

“Bones” goes for a single leg and when Steveson escapes, he goes immediately for the same technique on Jones, lunging towards his legs. Whether he did it instinctually or didn’t mean to actually connect, Jones throws a knee as a counter which lands but fortunately, doesn’t do much damage.

The heavyweight champion immediately asks him if he’s okay and breaks the clinch as the two men laugh about it. It certainly would have been a rough welcome to mixed martial arts if Steveson had been hit by a knee that had even a little bit more power behind it.
