Gilbert Burns On MMA Retirement With No Regrets: ‘I Gave Everything to the Sport’

Gilbert Burns left his gloves in the Octagon after his TKO loss to Mike Malott at UFC Winnipeg on Saturday, ending a 14-year MMA career with no regrets and a quiet sense of peace about everything he gave the sport.

The retirement was kept completely private before the fight. No one outside Burns’ inner circle knew he was considering stepping away, making the post-fight moment all the more emotional when it unfolded in front of the Winnipeg crowd.

Burns explained that the decision came from a place of honesty with himself in the moment, the fight was not going the way he planned.

“I gave everything to the sport,” Burns told MMA Junkie. “When I wasn’t able to execute the game plan, when I felt he’s a little faster, stronger, a little bit this and that, then I was kind of like, ‘OK, if I cannot beat Mike Malott.’ Nothing against him. He’s a real contender. He’s a good fighter, but I don’t think he’s the top of the division like the other guys were. I said, ‘I will be honest. If I cannot beat him, that’s it.’”

He had gone into the fight with a clear fork in the road mapped out. A win over Malott would have led to a callout of Colby Covington and a push for a fight during International Fight Week. A loss meant retirement.

On the question of regrets, Burns was equally clear. “No regrets. I think I learned so much through the losses through the career. I don’t think I would change much. It was a great learning experience, growing experience. It was a good journey.”

He also reflected on what his career means as a lesson for his children, saying the message he wants them to take is about the value of full commitment to a goal regardless of the outcome.

“They see the sacrifice, they see me training every day. Sometimes the results don’t come my way. And then I say, ‘But you guys saw the journey, right?’ I didn’t leave any stone unturned. I did everything. But sometimes the result is not going to come. It’s just life.”

Burns finishes his career with a record of 22-10 in MMA and 15-10 inside the UFC, including a world title challenge against Kamaru Usman and victories over some of the most recognizable names in the welterweight division’s history.

  • “One of the Good Guys” – Burns Retires After Loss To Malott

“One of the Good Guys” – Burns Retires After Loss To Malott

Mike Malott will be the new name in the welterweight division’s contender rankings — while one fighter simultaneously lays down his gloves.

Malott got the Canadian crowd at UFC Winnipeg off their seats with a finish of former title challenger Gilbert Burns in the main event. Burns retired following the fight.

Both fighters looked to get their striking going during the opening frame. Burns landed a strong right early, but Malott appeared to get more effective strikes off during the round.

Malott got Burns in some trouble during round two, busting him up with a pair of right hands. Malott also consistently defended Burns’ takedown efforts, stuffing seven takedowns in the first half of the fight’s allotted time.

Malott didn’t need all 25 minutes, however. He dropped Burns in the third with a combination. Burns tried to get back up but was on wobbly legs. Malott floored him with another right hand, and follow-up shots ended things quickly.

Mike Malott Stops Retiring Gilbert Burns In UFC Winnipeg Main Event

Malott has now won four straight and is 7-1 in the UFC. He entered this fight off a win over Kevin Holland at UFC Vancouver.

Burns ends his career with five losses in a row. He was 3-7 in the UFC since unsuccessfully challenging Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight title in 2021.

Burns is a former Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion and a bronze medalist in the 2015 ADCC World Championship.

Burns made his professional MMA debut in 2012, going on to make his UFC debut in 2014. After an 8-3 run, Burns found a permanent home at welterweight. He was on a six-fight win streak before challenging Usman at UFC 258.

  • Gilbert Burns reveals he is in concussion protocol

Gilbert Burns reveals he is in concussion protocol

UFC star Gilbert Burns has revealed that he is current in concussion protocol, but that when he returns, he’s interested in a fight against Daniel Rodriguez.

Gilbert Burns is an absolute warrior and that’s been the case throughout the course of his UFC career. He even managed to compete for the welterweight title, causing Kamaru Usman some serious problems before ultimately losing via finish.

Now, however, Gilbert Burns has lost four on the bounce. At the age of 39, some have wondered whether or not he’ll carry on competing in the UFC – but it certainly seems as if that’s his plan.

In a recent interview, Gilbert Burns spoke openly about his current situation and what he wants next.

Gilbert Burns looks ahead to the future

“I’m looking toward December,” Burn told MMA Junkie. “I had a little concussion, I’m still not able to come back, so I’ve still got to get a few more things in the protocol to get able to get back to training. I’ve still got to take it easy a bit. It was a hard one, but I’m looking toward December. I just saw Daniel Rodriguez just got a nice win against Kevin Holland. He’s ranked now. I think that should be a fun one. Me and Daniel Rodriguez in December, maybe January.”

“Let’s see how the concussion protocol goes,” Burns said. “That’s one I’m looking forward to. With the brain you can’t play it all. We’ve got to take it most serious. Most likely December or January. Let’s see how it goes.”

  • Michael Morales Breaks His Silence After Statement Win: ‘I’m Here, And I’m Coming For That Belt’

Michael Morales is radiating confidence in the wake of his latest Octagon outing.

Morales secured the biggest win of his career to date last Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, where he delivered a thunderous first-round knockout of former welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns in the UFC Vegas 106 main event.

The undefeated Ecuadorian wasted no time asserting his dominance, dismantling “Durinho” with calculated aggression from the very first exchange. Morales kept the pressure relentless, landing heavy shots that visibly shook Burns early on.

Burns made a last-ditch effort to shift the momentum, reaching for a leg in an attempt to initiate a grappling exchange — but Morales swiftly broke free and continued to press forward with punishing strikes. After the Brazilian went down for the second time, referee Herb Dean stepped in to call a halt to the contest at 3:39 into the bout.

Michael Morales Sets Sights On Title Contention Following Knockout Win Over Gilbert Burns

With his victory over Gilbert Burns, Michael Morales has taken a significant step forward in his career, positioning himself as a serious presence in the UFC’s talent-rich welterweight division.

During a recent interview with ESPN MMA, Morales reflected on his rising stature in the weight class and asserted that his latest performance has sent a clear message to every contender vying for the title.

“I said I was moving up in the rankings quietly and calmly, but I think now everyone has realized that I’m here, lurking for the belt, Michael Morales said. “That’s what I’m going to keep doing-everyone’s on notice now after this performance.”

Morales punched his ticket to the UFC with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Nikolay Veretennikov on Dana White’s Contender Series back in September 2021. Since then, he’s remained undefeated inside the Octagon, amassing a perfect 6-0 record, with four of those wins coming by way of knockout.

In his post-fight press conference, Morales expressed interest in a potential clash with Ian Garry, calling for the bout to take place at the upcoming Noche UFC event in Guadalajara, Mexico, scheduled for Sept. 13.

  • 7 Hits and 3 Misses From UFC Fight Night: Gilbert Burns vs. Michael Morales

7 Hits and 3 Misses From UFC Fight Night: Gilbert Burns vs. Michael Morales

It was back to the UFC APEX on Saturday Night, as the UFC hosted another Fight Night card in its headquarter city of Las Vegas with UFC Vegas 106: Gilbert Burns vs. Michael Morales.

Even in a card with a small audience like the UFC APEX always provides, all of the fighters, from the prelims to the main event, look to show off and put on a spectacular performance that can be their next ticket to a bigger opportunity. The result this time around was an absolutely fun card that saw strong performances from youth to veterans alike.

The main event was an anticipated clash between a former welterweight title challenger in Burns and a rising welterweight star in Morales.

Burns was once that rising star in the welterweight scene, but things have not been the same for him since losing his welterweight title match against Kamaru Usman at UFC 258. He entered this bout on a three-fight losing streak, having lost to former champion Belal Muhammad, new champion Jack Della Maddalena and another rising contender in Sean Brady.

Morales, meanwhile, has been a name to watch out for since his arrival to the UFC from Dana White’s Contender Series a few years ago. Morales had won all five Octagon battles he had entering tonight. In 2022, Morales got off on the right foot with finishes of Trevin Giles and Adam Fugitt, and he followed that up with decision wins over Max Griffin and Jake Matthews. Most recently, Morales had scored a first-round finish of Neil Magny.

The main card also featured a lightweight clash between Sodiq Yusuff and The Ultimate Fighter season 32 winner Mairon Santos, a middleweight battle between Dustin Stoltzfus and Nursulton Ruziboev, and a featherweight battle between Julian Erosa and Melquizael Costa.

Who shined? What was bad? Let’s find out together with the hits and misses of UFC Vegas 106!

Hit – Didn’t Watch The Prelims? Missed A Lot Of Exciting Finishes

I heard all the talk entering the card. “It’s the APEX.” “There is nothing special about these prelims.” “This is a skippable show.” Isn’t it funny how there have been plenty of times where those phrases have been uttered and yet the prelims prove to be exciting? Heck, I think the UFC Vegas 106 prelims were better than the main card!

Did the strawweight contender opener between Tecia Pennington and Luana Pinhiero not do you anything? Well then what could have done something is how all the other prelim bouts — six — each produced a solid finish. Hyun Sung Park scored a choke in his first fight in a year. Denise Gomes pulled off a brutal showing of violence. Luana Santos scored a finish in the closing seconds of round two. Yadier del Valle got a dominant finish in his Octagon debut. Jared Gordon with a blasting knockout. Finally, Gabriel Green went from being troubled to causing it with his second-round submission.

I would hope we have learned our lesson by now about not judging a book (for main card or prelims) by its cover. Yes, 2025 hasn’t been the greatest year of MMA, but we’ve seen plenty of fun from the prelims before. They’re always worth keeping an eye on for one reason or another, and tonight showed that.

    Miss – It’s Still The Apex…

…This is the one thing I can’t defend.

I’m not going to spend too much time on this one because I know I’m preaching to the choir and the UFC isn’t going to listen. But, come on. We just had a solid streak of shows in Kansas City, Des Moines, and Montreal, showing just how important a live crowd is to these events. And now we find ourselves back in the low-audience UFC APEX, and we’ll be at the UFC APEX again for the UFC’s next card at the end of the month.

I understand they do it for the sake of saving money, but imagine what that finish-filled prelims would have been like in front of a major live audience. Imagine what Gilbert Burns vs. Michael Morales would have been like in front of a true, notable arena.

It’s never going to happen, but I really wish the UFC was on the road full time with these Fight Night events like the old days. The good news is after May, it looks like the next UFC APEX event (not counting The Ultimate Fighter shows) won’t be until August. Let’s appreciate what we get in the next two months then.

    Hit – Denise Gomes’ Destruction

Denise Gomes may be a force to be reckoned with in the women’s strawweight division if she continues to perform the way that she did against Elise Reed.

It wasn’t a contest from the minute the fight started. An early rocking right hand, an elbow that did damage on Reed’s face, top pressure on the ground, attempting an arm-triangle before the end of the first. It looked like a black belt who has been training their craft for their years doing battle with an inexperienced, new white belt. Another strong shot early in the second round, followed by ground-and-pound, put things away for good.

Obviously there may be a little concern since Gomes started her Octagon run 2-2. But when you consider what she did against Yazmin Jauregui in one of those performances, combined with that she’s now won three straight and five of six (with her only loss in the span against Angela Hill), perhaps it’s time that Gomes’ next fight comes against someone in the top 15.

Hit – Yadier del Valle’s Debut

Yadier Del Valle’s nickname is “The Cuban Problem.” And if he performs in the UFC as well as he did in his Octagon debut at UFC Vegas 106, he may just become a problem for the featherweight division.

Up against Connor Matthews, Del Valle brought the pressure right away with both leg kicks and combinations. And once he caught a kick from Matthews, it was done from there. Del Valle dumped Matthews to the ground and swarmed him with pressure before grabbing a hold of his back and scoring the tapout with a choke.

Del Valle is 9-0 and had strong performances in promotions like Fury FC and Combate Global before his appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series last year. It will be interesting to see what the UFC throws at Del Valle next.

Hit – Jared Gordon Brings The Power

Here’s a feel-good showing. Veteran Jared Gordon has had his ups and downs the last few years in the Octagon. But going up against another veteran in Thiago Alves on this night, Gordon made the most of this opportunity by landing a devastating one-punch knockout.

Gordon was strong on the ground, but Moises wasn’t easy, landing an elbow from the bottom that busted Gordon open. Moises would scramble back to the feet and exchange with Gordon. But once Gordon perfectly timed a right hand that landed on the button, the fight was done.

Gordon is now unbeaten in three of his last four, and it’ll be interesting to see if the UFC books him gatekeeper style against a lower-ranked lightweight contender or another lightweight name on the rise. Gordon was also scheduled to fight earlier this year against KauĂȘ Fernandes before a visa issue saw him replaced by Mashrabjon Ruziboev (and then Ruziboev fell ill) — would the UFC be interested in trying to run one of these pairings back?

Hit – Melquizael Costa and Julian Erosa Produce A Banger

Melquizael Costa and Julian Erosa opened the main card and broke the streak of consecutive finishes. But the pair made up for it by putting on a memorable back-and-forth, strike-filled clash that could have some rumblings of one of the most entertaining fights of 2025.

Costa and Erosa had a war. The first round saw Costa showing off sharp strikes, while Erosa battled back with gritty clinch work and solid pressure. Costa rocked Erosa during the second round, but Erosa stayed in the fight and had some late flurries before the frame’s end. Both men cracked one another in the final round, with the two trading devastating shots, along with counters and takedowns, before Costa walked away with the 29-28 win on all three judges’ cards.

Only one man got his hand raised, but, as cliché as it is to say, no one lost in this fight. I hope both men are given another opportunity to entertain and deliver in a big way in their next-booked bouts.

Hit – Mairon Santos Continues To Look Better

Mairon Santos was taking on a notable name in Sodiq Yusuff in just his third UFC bout. But credit given where it’s due, Santos looked great, and the fight — which ended in a decision win for him — showed just how far he’s come in his MMA career.

Santos was able to mix hard shots with aggression and timing, taking control of the opening frame. Santos continued to find striking success over the next two rounds, clearly controlling the second round overall before a third round where he landed the more effective strikes again. Santos also nullified Yusuff’s grappling, stopping takedown attempts — and when Yusuff landed one with just over two minutes left in the fight, he managed to get up quickly.

A winner of The Ultimate Fighter season 32, Santos is now 3-0 in the UFC and continues to look good. It’ll be interesting to see what tougher competition he gets next. And if he wins his next fight, and looks good doing so, maybe it’ll then be time to see him against some ranked competition to see how he fares.

Miss – New Weight Class Does Nothing For Sodiq Yusuff

When you move to a new weight class, the hope is that you look good while doing so — win or loss. But not only did Yusuff lose this fight, it wasn’t his best work either. In fact, two judges and plenty of online pundits felt Yusuff didn’t win a single round against Santos.

This now marks three losses in a row for Yusuff. Granted, those other two losses were a comeback-losing performance against Edson Barboza that earned Fight of the Night honors and getting stopped by Diego Lopes, who recently challenged for the featherweight title. But ever since blowing that lead in the fight against Barboza, Yusuff just hasn’t looked the same.

It’s not the worst of skids, but with him about to turn 32 years old tomorrow, May 19, he needs to make something happen in his next fight. Otherwise, perhaps Yusuff’s days as someone to watch out for, a viable contender at 145 (or 155 for that matter) may be done.

Hit – Michael Morales May Be Next

There was one common thought among fight journalists and fight fans alike after UFC Vegas 106 — Michael Morales is just 25 years old. Let me say that again — he is 25 (TWENTY-FIVE) years old. And look what Morales did against Gilbert Burns.

After utilizing his footwork and jab during the opening round, Morales cracked Burns with an uppercut. Burns was able to get a takedown, but Morales stood right back, landed another crushing blow before another flurry that did Burns in.

To quote commentary after the fight, no one has done to Burns what Michael Morales did. He doesn’t turn 26 for another month, and he is about to crack the top 10 of the welterweight division. It may even be at Burns’ No. 8 spot entering this fight, considering not only did he beat Burns, but Morales is better than the guys sandwiched between them — Colby Covington, Geoff Neal and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.

Obviously there can be a little uncertainty right now with who is next. The division just had a shake-up with Jack Della Maddalena beating Belal Muhammad for the welterweight title, Islam Makhachev is about to jump up to 155 and challenge for that title and Kamaru Usman and Joaquin Buckley still have to face off in the main event of UFC Atlanta in June. But regardless, it’s time to capitalize on Morales’ age and momentum and give him a top-five contender in the main event of a Fight Night or co-main event of a pay-per-view next (or a featured bout if that PPV has two title fights).

Miss – The End For Gilbert Burns?

For fans of Gilbert “Durinho” Burns like myself, this one is going to hurt.

Burns has been an entertaining and fan-favorite part of the welterweight division. There was once a time where people thought he was going to be the next UFC welterweight champion. In fact, when he challenged Kamaru Usman at UFC 258, he may have been just a few seconds away from doing so. But Usman survived and finished Burns — and since then, nothing has been the same.

Burns has now lost four straight. The loss to Usman has started a rough stretch where he’s now lost six of his last nine fights. Now it’s one thing to pick apart the losses — from the names that he’s faced (Usman, Khamzat Chimaev, Muhammad, JDM, etc.) to circumstances (taking the UFC 288 fight with Muhammad on really short notice). But fact is fact — he’s on a bad losing skid. And the negative momentum has only been compounded with a loss to this rising name in Morales.

    https://twitter.com/TakeruCigarra/status/1923909700598317498

It’s a worse streak than what Yusuff is on, and the worse part? Burns is about to turn 39 in July. You know what they say: Father Time is everyone’s worst enemy, especially for an athlete. This loss has solidified Burns as a gatekeeper at 170 — which isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it also eliminates him from serious title contention. He may have had his one chance and blown it.

Burns has been helping other fighters in training camps. Burns has dabbled with podcasting. There’s a great life for him outside of actively fighting — and perhaps it’s time he considers the dreaded “r” word in this sport. It hurts to say as someone who loves watching Burns fight. But at this point, it might be what’s best.

If you want to make the defense of the skid as I stated before, fine. But if Burns has another fight and loses his fifth straight, what’ll be there to say then?

  • ‘This Good At 25 Is Frightening’ – Fans & Fighters React As Michael Morales Runs Through Gilbert Burns In UFC Vegas 106 Headliner

‘This Good At 25 Is Frightening’ – Fans & Fighters React As Michael Morales Runs Through Gilbert Burns In UFC Vegas 106 Headliner

Michael Morales took the opposition of former UFC welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns and made the fight look like a walk in the park, needing just one round to finish Burns in the UFC Vegas 106 main event and move to 18-0.

Morales looked to take control right away, moving toward the center, while Burns stayed patient on the outside. Burns started with leg kicks before trying to bring heat. But Morales was ready and utilized strong footwork and his jabs to keep Burns at bay.

After some exchanging, Morales rocked Burns with an uppercut. Burns looked to respond with a takedown, and while he was successful, Morales was able to get up quickly. He then rocked Burns with a right hand and followed it up with a flurry.

Burns attempted another takedown that was easily shaken off before another flurry dropped “Dorinho” and brought the action to a quick close.

Michael Morales Makes It Look Easy Against Gilbert Burns In UFC Vegas 106 Main Event

Morales has been on a strong run since making his UFC debut in 2022. Prior to tonight, his track record included finishes of Trevin Giles, Adam Fugitt and Neil Magny, as well as decisions over Max Griffin and Jake Matthews.

Burns has now lost four straight and is 3-6 stretching back to his unsuccessful challenge of then-welterweight champ Kamaru Usman at UFC 258.

“I Had to Change a Lot After Back-to-Back Losses,” Gilbert Burns Reveals Hard Truths Ahead of UFC Main Event

Gilbert Burns is set to headline this weekend’s UFC Fight Night, marking a significant moment in his career after enduring consecutive losses. The Brazilian welterweight, known for his aggressive style and grappling skills, has been a mainstay in the UFC since his debut in 2014.

    Gilbert Burns vs. Michael Morales

Brazil’s Gilbert Burns has faced some of the division’s top fighters, including Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal, and has consistently remained in the title conversation.

The stakes are high for Gilbert Burns as he enters the main event of UFC Fight Night against undefeated prospect Michael Morales. Burns, currently ranked No. 8 in the welterweight division, is looking to halt a three-fight losing streak and prove he still belongs among the elite after recent setbacks against top contenders. A win would not only preserve his place in the top 10 but also reassert his relevance in a division that has seen a surge of new talent.

For Morales, ranked No. 12, this fight is a major opportunity to break into the upper echelon of the division by defeating a seasoned former title challenger. The outcome will shape the immediate future for both fighters: Burns fights to maintain his status, while Morales aims to announce himself as a legitimate contender at 170 pounds.

    Gilbert Burns Needs a Win

Ahead of his main event bout, Burns addressed the media at the pre-fight press conference. He spoke candidly about the challenges he has faced following his recent setbacks. Burns admitted that his performances had not met his own expectations, citing issues with weight cuts and recovery as factors that affected his last fight. He emphasized that his focus is now on delivering the kind of performance he knows he is capable of, rather than being concerned about his opponent. Gilbert Burns explained:

“I’m putting pressure on myself just because of my performance. I want to perform. I don’t think the last time I performed the way I want. I had a little problems-no excuse-I had a little problems with my weight cut, my recovery… I want to be here, but it’s not about my opponent, it’s about me performing. I want to go there and put on the work that I’ve been training, and I’m excited to be here, to be back, to show up, to put on a show.”

The Brazilian-born athlete Gilbert Burns also revealed that a difficult conversation with his coach after his last loss forced him to reevaluate his approach to training and competition. He acknowledged that he was not putting in the level of work required to succeed at the highest level. This realization led him to make several changes in his preparation and mindset, which he believes have helped restore his confidence. He added:

“After my last loss, I had a real conversation with my coach. It was painful, but I needed to hear it. He told me, ‘You’re still working, but you’re not putting in the work you should.’ That was hard to hear, but it changed everything. I had to change a lot of things in my career to get here. I felt a little rejuvenated. Let’s right those wrongs. Those losses, especially back-to-back, sucked. I never had two losses back-to-back in MMA. I had to change a couple of things, and they helped me bring my belief back.”

As he prepares to step into the octagon this weekend, Burns is motivated by the opportunity to prove himself and move past his recent defeats. He expressed a sense of renewal and determination to showcase the improvements he has made. For Burns, this main event is not just another fight, but a chance to demonstrate growth and resilience in the face of adversity.

  • Gilbert Burns Defends Sean Strickland Amid UFC 312 Criticism: ‘People Have Very Short Memories’

Gilbert Burns Defends Sean Strickland Amid UFC 312 Criticism: ‘People Have Very Short Memories’

UFC 312 might be over but Sean Strickland’s disappointing performance is still on many fans’ radar. Apparently, after frequently promising a violent war against Dricus Du Plessis, he couldn’t deliver and the fight was a one-sided bashing. Although many have complained about Strickland not walking the talk, top welterweight contender Gilbert Burns feels differently.

The Brazilian is among the few fighters defending Strickland when even the latter’s long-time coach, Eric Nicksick, has shifted grounds.

In a recent episode of Show Me The Money podcast, the former title challenger called out critics who’re questioning Strickland’s legacy based on one loss:

“Another thing, Sean didn’t get the defense. Sean was falling, I don’t know, maybe he wasn’t feeling good, whatever. We’re never going to know, right? But to say, ‘Oh, he talks a lot, he doesn’t back it up,’ I don’t like that. I think the guy backs it up many times. He backed it up against Imavov, he backed it up against my guy Brendan Allen, he backed it up against so many guys, right? Paulo Costa, Adesanya, bro, he beat a lot of the best guys, and people are saying, ‘Oh, he just talks, he doesn’t do much.’ I think that’s very disrespectful.”

Burns claimed that people’s memories have become photographic in the modern world as they’ve clearly forgot Strickland’s impressive wins over Nassourdine Imavov, Paulo Costa, Israel Adesanya, and Brendan Allen.

“People have very short memories, it’s the reels day, you know? It’s the TikTok days where you swipe, you see something nice, swipe again, and then it’s gone. But it wasn’t long ago the guy was the champion, fighting everybody. He beat so many good guys, and people are just saying, “Oh, he talks a lot, he’s crazy,” but I like it. And the guy backs it up, or he tries at least.”

Burns last fought Sean Brady in September 2024, and is scheduled to return on UFC 314 on April 12, 2025. The veteran is on a three-fight losing streak and only a solid win can help him remain in the title race.

The Brazilian’s opponent for the Miami card, Michael Morales, certainly poses a big threat. Standing a decade younger, he’s among the very few elite fighters on an undefeated run. Coming out of a TKO win over Neil Magny, Morales will try to add another big name to his resume to rise quickly in the rankings.

As for Strickland, he’s still the no. 2 ranked UFC middleweight contender in the world. From rematches with Imavov, Costa, and Adesanya to fresh fights against Robert Whittaker, Khamzat Chimaev, and Caio Borralho, he has plenty of options on the table for his imminent return to the Octagon.

  • Gilbert Burns Names Three Bellator Fighters Who Can Give UFC Champs A Run For Their Money

Gilbert Burns Names Three Bellator Fighters Who Can Give UFC Champs A Run For Their Money

UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns is looking forward to the UFC signing three Bellator fighters to its roster. The Brazilian believes these fighters not only boast considerable star power, but also have the potential to defeat many top contenders and even the champions of their respective divisions.

Burns is currently on a three-fight losing skid and he’ll return at UFC 314 in Miami, Florida, to face undefeated prospect Michael Morales on April 12, 2025. The former UFC title challenger is on the longest losing streak of his career, making this matchup really important for his title aspirations and future in the promotion.

As of now, “Durinho” is ranked 8th in the division and he definitely can’t afford losing to the no. 12 ranked prospect in Morales.

In a recent episode of Show Me The Money, Burns appeared alongside popular UFC lightweight Renato Moicano to discuss UFC 312 and all things MMA. While talking about potential signings for the UFC, Burns named three fighters who are yet to fight for the promotion but have all the tools to make it big there.

“That’s one guy that I really want to see in the UFC is freaking Patchy Mix. That guy is so good, so good, and I hope they release him because they don’t give him a fight. It’s two guys that I think—so many guys from Bellator, but I’ll say my three favorite guys to be in the UFC now from Bellator is Johnny Eblen. That’s the number one. That guy, he could go head-to-head with Dricus Du Plessis.”

    He further added:

“That’s one thing, I think he’s a top five for sure. I don’t know if he is gonna beat DDP. I think he can, I think he can, but we got to see, you know? That’s one thing. So, Johnny Eblen should be in the UFC. Patchy Mix, 100%, should be in the UFC. And I think Patricio Pitbull, you know, he can—I don’t know if he’s going to make that run now, but yeah, I wanna see Pitbull in the UFC. Those are my three guys outside of the UFC with the whole Bellator-PFL history. Those three guys I want to see so much in the UFC right now, especially Patchy Mix and Johnny Eblen. Those guys are in their prime and I think it’ll be a couple of great fights.”

While Patricio “Pitbull” Freire is 37 and arguably in the latter half of his career, both Patchy Mix (31) and Johnny Eblen (33) are very well in their physical primes. Mix boasts an impressive 20-1 record as a bantamweight and Eblen is an undefeated middleweight. This explains why Burns, alongside many in the MMA community, is excited to see how these fighters perform in the UFC.

Considering that the PFL brand is struggling amidst its acquisition of Bellator, many of its fighters want to be relieved of their contracts. It is undoubtedly a good time for the UFC to sign these stars and give its champions a run for their money. As for fans, they simply want to see the best fight the best, regardless of promotions.

  • Gilbert Burns Set For UFC 314 Return In Miami, Faces Undefeated Prospect

Gilbert Burns Set For UFC 314 Return In Miami, Faces Undefeated Prospect

A big fight in the welterweight division is the first major matchup to have been reported for the UFC’s return to Miami on April 12. Ag. Fight revealed that the former UFC welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns will be back in Miami for the second consecutive year to take on the undefeated Michael Morales.

Burns is currently coming off the biggest winless streak of his career after losing his last three bouts inside the Octagon. In May of 2023, he suffered an injury in his defeat to Belal Muhammad, returning the following year in Miami where he was finished by Jack Della Maddalena. His difficult run of form continued last September where he lost a unanimous decision to Sean Brady over five rounds at the UFC Apex.

In order to return to the win column, the #8-ranked contender will need to be the first man to defeat Ecuador’s Morales in 17 fights. The 25-year old arrived in the UFC back in 2022 after earning his contract via Dana White’s Contender Series and he has made quiet the impression ever since.

He has since beaten the likes of Neil Magny, Jake Matthews and Max Griffin to put together a five-fight winning streak inside the Octagon which has earned him the #12-spot in the top 15. With 12 wins via knockout, Morales is a dangerous contender who will be hoping to earn the biggest win of his career to date in Miami.

For “Durinho”, beating a highly regarded rising star like Morales could be the confidence boost that he needs to re-establish himself as a serious player at the top of the welterweight division.

Though the fight was not a done deal at the time, Burns recently spoke about the potential matchup during an episode of the Show Me The Money Podcast. He gave Morales plenty of praise before saying that despite it being a tough fight for both of them, like his friend Renato Moicano, he “cannot afford to lose”.

  • Gilbert Burns Targets Colby Covington For UFC Event In Miami: ‘I Know You Not Showing Up!’

Gilbert Burns Targets Colby Covington For UFC Event In Miami: ‘I Know You Not Showing Up!’

Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington have yet to share the Octagon, but their paths may soon cross following a week of online exchanges fueled by a prank.

The drama began when Burns publicly tweeted UFC Tampa cornerman Chael Sonnen’s phone number. The move was a response to the UFC legend spreading a rumor that the Brazilian had retired from MMA. While “Durinho” and Sonnen appear to have resolved their differences, the stunt didn’t sit well with Covington.

In defense of the former fighter, Covington issued a challenge to Burns, proposing a fight in his honor. The one-time title challenger quickly accepted the idea and suggested Miami as the venue, expressing interest in an April showdown.

“Just [sign] the contract,” Burns wrote. “I know you not showing up.”

Both fighters are looking to bounce back in their careers.

Burns is on a three-fight losing streak, while Covington has dropped his last two bouts. Interestingly, both athletes’ most recent victories came against Jorge Masvidal — in March 2022 for “Chaos” and April 2023 for “Durinho.”

  • Gilbert Burns Predicts Colby Covington Will ‘Overwhelm’ Joaquin Buckley At UFC Tampa

Gilbert Burns Predicts Colby Covington Will ‘Overwhelm’ Joaquin Buckley At UFC Tampa

Gilbert Burns believes Joaquin Buckley may face significant challenges when he steps into the Octagon against Colby Covington. The highly anticipated fight is set to headline this Saturday’s UFC Fight Night at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

Burns reflected on Buckley’s 2018 loss to Logan Storley at Bellator 197, a bout that took place in a higher weight class. The Brazilian thinks Storley’s dominant wrestling performance in that fight offers insight into how Covington might approach the matchup.

“I think Buckley’s in the best momentum right now, but (wrestling is) Buckley’s kryptonite,” Burns explained during an interview on Submission Radio. “One of my favorite teammates is Logan Storley — he was the interim Bellator champ. He fought Buckley and just outwrestled him. Logan took him down, beat him up with ground-and-pound, and did it over and over. That’s something Colby can really do.”

Since moving down to welterweight, Buckley has built an impressive 5-0 record, including a knockout victory over Stephen Thompson at UFC 307 in October.

Despite “New Mansa’s” recent momentum, however Burns predicts Covington’s relentless pace and wrestling prowess could give him the upper hand, especially in the later rounds.

“Colby might give a lot of problems to Buckley, taking him down repeatedly with that crazy pace,” Burns noted. “Buckley’s a big guy with a lot of muscle. If Buckley cannot put Colby out in the first or second round, I think Colby will overwhelm him. Colby could win with a dominant decision, but Buckley could also score a quick knockout early in the fight.”

The clash between Buckley’s power and Covington’s endurance promises to deliver a high-stakes battle.

  • Gilbert Burns Admits ‘Mistake’ Of Listening To Multiple Nutritionists Cost Him In Sean Brady Fight

Gilbert Burns Admits ‘Mistake’ Of Listening To Multiple Nutritionists Cost Him In Sean Brady Fight

Gilbert Burns recently confessed that his decision to follow advice from multiple nutritionists was a costly error, one that ultimately contributed to his loss against Sean Brady.

“Durinho” stepped into the main event of UFC Vegas 97 last weekend, hoping to reignite one final push for the welterweight title. However, his plans were decisively derailed as Brady overwhelmed him over five punishing rounds with a relentless barrage of takedowns and grappling mastery, ultimately handing Burns a unanimous decision loss—his third consecutive defeat.

Burns was hopeful that a victory over Brady would put him back on the road to championship contention. Heading into fight week, he was confident in both his training and recovery, feeling physically prepared. Yet, he still wasn’t able to perform at his full potential when it mattered most.

The 38-year-old Brazilian was dismayed by his showing. However, in the aftermath of the loss, he has finally pieced together what went wrong in the lead-up to the bout

Burns Attributes Bad Weight Cut On Confusion With Multiple Nutritionists

During a recent video on his YouTube channel, Burns opened up about his loss to Brady, revealing that his preparation was compromised by poor decision-making. “Durinho” admitted that leading up to the fight, he consulted several nutritionists and then complicated matters by blending their advice with his own approach.

This misstep led to a problematic weight cut, which ultimately reflected in the fight, as he felt lethargic and lacked his usual sharpness in movement.

“Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, I had a lot of energy; I felt great,” Burns said. “But Thursday I had a hard weight cut at night, and Friday morning I had a very hard weight cut in the morning, and I think that was the result. That’s why I think I felt very sluggish. I felt bad, but I do believe it was my recovery. Before I point fingers at everyone, I have my nutritionist, Marcelo Ferro, who does an amazing job. But my mistake was listening to two other nutritionists and the UFC a little bit.”

“So, another nutritionist that is a good friend of mine, Lucas, and coach Carl Gebhardt—I went to California to do all the tasks, and instead of doing the things that I do with Marcelo, I was kind of doing a little bit of coach Carl, a little bit of Marcelo, and a little bit of Lucas. So, at the end of the day, I didn’t follow through with anyone’s plan. I took a little bit from each one and kind of did my own plan. So when I made weight, I did great, but when I saw the recovery, I did a little bit from all three nutritionists, and it kind of didn’t work out.”

Burns said in a backstage interview with the UFC that he’s uncertain about the future of his career. His last victory came at UFC 287 in April 2023 against Jorge Masvidal. “Durinho” once rode the momentum of a six-fight win streak, but since his failed bid at the title against former champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 258 in February 2021, he has struggled to regain his footing with a consistent winning run.

  • UFC Rankings Report: Aljamain Sterling Replaces Israel Adesanya On P4P List, Diego Lopes Falls Ahead Of Noche UFC

UFC Rankings Report: Aljamain Sterling Replaces Israel Adesanya On P4P List, Diego Lopes Falls Ahead Of Noche UFC

As always, the latest action on offer inside the Octagon has seen some climb the ladder toward contention and others fall away.

And in the aftermath of UFC Fight Night: Gilbert Burns vs. Sean Brady, MMA News has you covered with this week’s updates to the official UFC rankings.

Men’s Pound-For-Pound:  Israel Adesanya has found himself off the P4P list for the first time in years. Weeks on from his failed bid to achieve three-time champ status against middleweight kinpgin Dricus Du Plessis, “The Last Stylebender” has lost his #15 spot to former bantamweight titleholder Aljamain Sterling.

Women’s Pound-for-Pound: NatĂĄlia Silva’s triumph over JĂ©ssica Andrade on Saturday was enough to elevate her into the female P4P discussion. She’s debuted in the rankings at #14, leading to Ketlen Vieira falling out entirely. Above her, Andrade has slipped by two positions to #13, providing small boosts for Kayla Harrison (#11) and Virna Jandiroba (#12).

    Women’s Strawweight: No changes.

Women’s Flyweight: As expected, Silva has slotted in one place outside the top five at 125 pounds, occupying Andrade’s previous position. That’s left the former strawweight queen two spots worse off at #8.

Women’s Bantamweight: After Pannie Kianzad parted ways with the UFC, she’s been removed from the 135-pound rankings. Her vacant spot has been filled by AilĂn PĂ©rez (#15). Further up, Norma Dumont (#8) has moved above her fellow countrywoman Karol Rosa (#9).

Flyweight: While he hung up his gloves this past weekend, Matt Schnell has remained ranked for the time being. His loss to Cody Durden has seen him fall three places to #13, with his victorious opponent up two spots to #12.

    Bantamweight: No changes.

Featherweight: Bizarrely, the surging Diego Lopes has fallen at 145 pounds just days out from his showdown with Brian Ortega at Noche UFC. Previously ranked #12, the Mexico-based Brazilian has dropped one place behind Bryce Mitchell. That’s despite the Arkansas native not being in action since a brutal knockout loss to Josh Emmett last December.

    Lightweight: No changes.

Welterweight: Sean Brady is within touching distance of the top five at 170 pounds following his main event win over Gilbert Burns. While he’s risen to #6, “Durinho” has fallen to #8. Lower down, Kevin Holland has returned to the rankings at #15, a spot he shares with Neil Magny. That’s despite “Trailblazer” being scheduled to stay at middleweight for the time being.

    Middleweight: No changes.

    Light Heavyweight: No changes.

    Heavyweight: No changes.

  • Gilbert Burns Addresses Future After Third Straight UFC Loss: ‘Nothing Was Good…I’ve Got To Rethink’

Gilbert Burns Addresses Future After Third Straight UFC Loss: ‘Nothing Was Good…I’ve Got To Rethink’

UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns knows he’s reached a point of uncertainty after falling to a three-fight losing skid.

Burns, a former title challenger on MMA’s biggest stage, suffered his latest defeat inside the Octagon this past weekend while headlining Saturday’s UFC Fight Night at the Apex.

Following consecutive defeats at the hands of then-future champion Belal Muhammad in May 2023 and the rising Jack Della Maddalena this past March, “Durinho” was hoping for a crucial rebound performance at the expense of Sean Brady.

But the Brazilian was unable to find that across five rounds in Las Vegas, instead falling to a convincing unanimous decision loss in what marked his third main event in the UFC.

With another slip down the pecking order set to arrive at his doorstep in Tuesday’s rankings update, Burns’ career appears to be in limbo.

‘Disappointed’ Burns Ready For ‘Rethink’ After Another Defeat

During a backstage interview with Charly Arnolt for ESPN, Burns gave an honest and critical reflection on his performance opposite Burns.

The former title challenger admitted that nothing felt right when the cage door closed behind him on Saturday night. And with that in mind, “Durinho” isn’t sure what lies ahead for him in MMA.

“I’m a little bit disappointed. I know I have the grit, I know I can fight hard, but I didn’t let go,” Burns said. “I felt great this whole freaking week. I felt good in training camp. This morning was great. But when I got (to the Octagon), it didn’t flow. It just didn’t flow. Nothing was good.

“I didn’t let it go. Props to Sean. Sean is a tough one. I hit him with some good shots, I tried to finish. I think I forced the finish too much,” Burns continued. “I don’t know (what’s next). … I’ve got to rethink. I’ve got to go back, talk to my coaches, see what’s next. At the same time, give a little time to my family. They give up so much when I’m in a camp for a fight. I’m gonna go back, spend time with the family, go back to train. I don’t have any injuries, thank God. I lost, but at least the body is feeling good.”

At 38 years old and riding a three-fight skid, returning to the title conversation would look to be an uphill task for Burns, who once appeared close to a title crowning after dropping Kamaru Usman early into their UFC 258 showdown over three years ago.

Brady, meanwhile, firmly has his eyes on the prize. And having likely secured a rise to within touching distance of the welterweight top five, the Philadelphian has his sights on either Ian Garry or Colby Covington next.

‘Belal vs. Brady Rematch For An Early Bedtime’ – Fans Give Mixed Reviews After Brady Beats Gilbert Burns In UFC Fight Night Main Event

Though not all fans were happy about the performance, the rising Sean Brady earned the biggest win of his MMA career thus far on Saturday night, defeating Gilbert Burns in the UFC Fight Night main event.

Brady brought most of the activity in a relatively quiet opening round. He continued his pace into the second, although Burns’ power was on display from the get-go, stumbling his American counterpart early with a right hand.

Burns appeared to land some of the fight’s strongest shots in the third frame, seemingly damaging Brady in a stuff and scramble. The Philadelphia native, however, managed to land knees to the body, fighting back and scoring the takedown to close out a highlight sequence featuring the two men.

Brady’s activity did not slow down in the fourth round, with many believing Burns needed to turn up the aggression and let his hands go in the fifth stanza. “Durinho” partially landed a jumping knee, but it wasn’t enough.

The favored American was able to score a takedown, riding out the round on top and scoring the unanimous nod from the judges.

Sean Brady Scores Decision Win Over Former Title Challenger Gilbert Burns

Brady has now won back-to-back fights after suffering the lone loss of his MMA career against current welterweight champion Belal Muhammad in October 2022.

Former welterweight title challenger Burns, meanwhile, has now lost three straight.

UFC Fight Night Results & Highlights: Sean Brady Outlasts Gilbert Burns

The mixed martial arts leader staged its latest UFC Fight Night event on Saturday, and MMA News has you covered with all the action.

Before all focus turns to a highly anticipated and significantly built-up Noche UFC pay-per-view at the Sphere next weekend, the promotion put on another card at a much more low-key Las Vegas venue in the Apex.

The headline spot fell in the welterweight division, where former title challenger Gilbert Burns attempted to defend his #6 spot on the ladder and keep his hopes of a late-career second opportunity at the gold alive at the expense of Sean Brady.

“Durinho” ultimately failed in that mission, with his Philadelphian opponent putting on a dominant display en route to a lopsided unanimous decision victory.

Before that, a former champion was in action as ex-strawweight queen Jéssica Andrade shared the cage with her surging fellow countrywoman Natålia Silva. The latter put on another striking masterclass to earn the nod from all three judges, catapulting her into the title picture at 125 pounds.

Gilbert Burns Believes He Can Finish Sean Brady ‘Better Than’ Belal Muhammad Did

UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns is planning to make a statement at Sean Brady’s expense on Saturday night.

The pair will headline this weekend’s UFC Fight Night at the Apex in Las Vegas, with Burns tasked with defending his #6 position on the divisional ladder off the back of consecutive defeats.

After falling short across five rounds against then-future champion Belal Muhammad in May 2023, an injury suffered in that fight kept “Durinho” on the sidelines until this past April’s UFC 299 pay-per-view in Miami.

Although he was just less than two minutes away from a crucial bounce-back victory on the scorecards, he was the victim of a late comeback from Jack Della Maddalena, who rallied to stop him by way of TKO.

That’s left the 38-year-old in desperate need of a return to winning ways. But more than just rebounding, the Brazilian sees a chance to move to within touching distance of the title against a former opponent of Muhammad’s…

Burns Envisions Emphatic Finish Of Brady To Secure Title Eliminator

During a recent interview with Kevin Iole, Burns looked ahead to his second Octagon assignment of 2024, detailing his hopes for fight night and what he anticipates coming as a result of a strong display.

Despite losing two on the bounce and slipping outside the top five at 170 pounds, “Durinho” believes the manner of his performance this weekend could determine whether he earns a title eliminator next time out, especially if he can go above and beyond what now-champ Muhammad accomplished at Brady’s expense back in 2022.

“I do believe if I go out there and look phenomenal against Sean Brady, then I get another guy, maybe Leon (Edwards), Colby (Covington), Kamaru (Usman). Then beat one of those guys, then I’m there, on the top,” Burns said. “I do believe if I do my homework this Saturday good, show up there and finish Sean Brady, you know, better than Belal did — if I go out there and after that, for sure rest a little bit, come back with a good training camp and beat one of the top guys, I’m there fighting for the title.”

Burns will look to move closer to his late-career second title shot coming to fruition this weekend by making good on his vow to stop Brady in violent fashion when they headline Saturday’s UFC Fight Night at the Apex.

Gilbert Burns Clarifies Sean Brady’s BJJ Black Belt Credentials

Gilbert Burns recently shared his thoughts on whether Sean Brady poses a legitimate threat on the ground, given his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Burns is gearing up to face Brady in a crucial welterweight showdown, set to headline this weekend’s Fight Night event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Durinho” has been absent from the Octagon since suffering a third-round knockout at the hands of Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299 this past March. That setback came just two months after another tough loss, when the 38-year-old Brazilian veteran was defeated by newly crowned welterweight champion Belal Muhammad at UFC 288 in May 2023.

Meanwhile, Brady is stepping into uncharted territory with his first-ever five-round bout under the UFC banner. The 31-year-old American has only gone past the third round once in his career. In his last appearance, he secured an impressive submission victory over seasoned veteran Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night Austin last December, bouncing back from the first setback of his career against Muhammad at UFC 280 in October 2022.

Burns is a formidable force on the mat, a dangerous grappler who has dominated since his return to the welterweight division in 2019, racking up the second-highest number of takedowns in the division. On the other hand, Brady is no slouch on the ground either, bringing his own savage submission game to the table, potentially making their matchup a fascinating chess contest of technical prowess and ground control…

Burns Holds Brady’s Grappling Skills In High Regard

During a recent interview with MMA journalist Kevin Iole, Burns was asked to weigh in on just how dangerous he believes Brady’s grappling game truly is. As a decorated BJJ black belt world champion himself, ‘Durinho’ acknowledged that his opponent is far from an ordinary grappler, noting that Brady trains under the tutelage of BJJ legend Daniel Gracie.

“He’s legit. His coach is Daniel Gracie, you know. Daniel Gracie grew up with Renzo [Gracie], so he’s very, very good,” Burns said. “Daniel Gracie saw Brady since he was a kid, so he’s a legit black belt.”

Burns went on to highlight Brady’s impressive grappling credentials, pointing out that Brady managed to defeat ADCC submission champion Craig Jones—an accomplishment that Burns himself couldn’t achieve.

“He beat Craig Jones even when [the bout] was set with no leg locks. When I lost to Craig Jones, it was with leg locks—he went quick on my leg. So, Sean Brady beat him under no leg lock rules. Yeah, he’s a great fighter.”

“Durinho” is currently navigating the first back-to-back losses of his career, and he’s well aware that the outcome on Saturday night carries critical weight if he hopes to climb back into title contention.

‘I’m Team Belal Muhammad’ – Gilbert Burns Extends Support For UFC Welterweight Champ Against Shavkat Rakhmonov

For the first time in his pro MMA career, Gilbert Burns has two consecutive losses on his record. He lost a decision to Belal Muhammad after getting injured early in the fight, followed by a late TKO loss to Jack Della Maddalena.

Despite the losses, fans aren’t overlooking Burns as he takes on Sean Brady this weekend. Brady’s last loss came against Muhammad as well, but he bounced back by submitting Kelvin Gastelum in December 2023.

Burns is hopeful about beginning another title run at welterweight by beating Brady, and he wants Muhammad to be the champion until he reaches the belt again…

Gilbert Burns Praises Belal Muhammad’s Approach As Champion While Hoping To Get His Rematch

Burns talked about his ambition to get another chance at becoming the UFC welterweight kingpin in an interview with MMA Junkie recently. He naturally needs to get past Brady first and hopes that Muhammad beats Shavkat Rakhmonov to remain champion.

“Durinho” not only wants to get his rematch but also likes how Muhammad has carried himself since becoming champ. For instance, “Remember the Name” aims to move up a weight class only after fighting all top contenders at welterweight.

Burns acknowledged that he’s trained with Rakhmonov quite a few times when they share camps. However, he’ll still be backing Muhammad to win as it’s the most ideal scenario for his rematch.

“I want Belal to stay champion when I fight for the title, you know, that’s my goal and then get the rematch for the title. That would be great so I’m team Belal Muhammad, you know, I want this guy to keep winning and then whenever I’m there, that’s the guy that I’m facing.”

The former title challenger also talked about how things have changed in the UFC welterweight division after Kamaru Usman’s dominant reign ended. He praised Muhammad for wanting to fight Rakhmonov over Usman as the former kingpin has now lost three UFC fights in a row.

“I like that Belal is being a good champion, you know, he said he wants to fight, face the number one contender guys, before thinking on moving up or moving, you know, fighting another champion. I like that, that’s my, that was my go-to you know. Go over there, beat the number one fighters, keep beating these guys and especially he, you know, he need to make that fan base, you know. He needs to make the fans excited. He’s doing a great job right now the way he talks and I think he’s gonna be a great champion.

Because he’s been saying the right things and wants to give his division’s contenders opportunities, Burns totally supports Muhammad to remain the champ for at least a year or two. Unsurprisingly, he would want to fight Muhammad again at his best and grab a UFC belt for the first time in his career.

Gilbert Burns Makes Retirement Admission Ahead Of UFC Return: ‘I’m Getting Freaking Old’

It’s often said that mixed martial arts is a young athlete’s game, and UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns is starting to feel just that.

At the age of 38 and 22 fights deep into his Octagon tenure, Burns remains highly ranked at #6. And the one-time title challenger isn’t done yet, looking to bounce back from a two-fight skid and revive his hopes of a late-career championship opportunity.

Having been the victim of a late comeback from Jack Della Maddalena last time out, a result that followed an injury-affected defeat opposite now-champ Belal Muhammad, “Durinho” has been left in desperate need of a rebound.

And the Brazilian has the chance to achieve that this weekend when he returns to main event a UFC Fight Night at the Apex opposite highly touted grappling specialist Sean Brady.

As he gears up to share the cage with the American on Saturday night, Burns is under no illusions about which stage of his career the matchup is coming at…

Burns On Retirement: ‘I Don’t Know How Much Longer…’

During a recent interview with Grind City Media, Burns looked ahead to his latest assignment on MMA’s biggest stage, which he’s appeared on consistently ever since his debut as an undefeated fighter back in 2014.

“Durinho” acknowledged that he’s certainly deep into the back end of his active career, the days of which are numbered. But he insisted that sufficient gas remains in the tank, something he plans to prove across the “handful of fights” he has left.

“I’m getting freaking old,” Burns said. “10 years in the UFC has been very good, but I don’t know how much longer. (I’ve) still got a couple fights left in me, so I’m not here for a long time. I still think I have a couple of good fights left, (but) not a lot. Not two hands full of fights, but (we’ve) still got at least one handful of fights left.”

One of those remaining bouts gets ticked off this weekend against the 16-1 Brady, who occupies the #8 spot on the welterweight ladder following a kimura submission of Kelvin Gastelum last December.

With a victory over the Philadelphia native, Burns could earn himself another chance to return to the division’s top five, where perhaps a second shot at title glory won’t be out of reach for the Brazilian veteran.

Former Opponent Reveals He Perfectly Predicted ‘Randy Couture Style’ Welterweight Title Win For Belal Muhammad At UFC 304

Belal Muhammad came into UFC 304 as the underdog but he certainly didn’t look like it in the early hours of the morning in Manchester.

The welterweight title challenger largely dominated Leon Edwards to become the champion via a unanimous decision verdict.

After Edwards had already beaten top grapplers in Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington, many assumed that he would have no problem thwarting the heavy wrestling approach of Muhammad, but this wasn’t the case.

Having been inside the Octagon with him for 25 minutes, a former opponent of the current champion saw this performance coming from him and successfully predicted it ahead of time.

Gilbert Burns Reveals Correct Pre-Fight Prediction & Breakdown For UFC 304

During a recent episode of the Believe You Me Podcast, Michael Bisping was joined by former welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns.

Burns is looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats next time out when he faces Sean Brady, both of whom whom were beaten by Muhammad during his undefeated run to the title.

“Durinho” revealed during the interview that he wasn’t surprised by what went down in Manchester and had in fact, told Bisping ahead of time.

After going through his messages, the former middleweight champion was able to find the message which correctly called that “Remember The Name” would get his hand raised on July 27 and how he would do it.

Bisping read the message aloud having asked Burns for his prediction, only to then forget to mention it during the live broadcast.

“Tough fight but I believe Belal’s going to make it a dog fight. I think that’s the only way for him to win and I believe he will do that. Randy Couture style dog fight. Inside dirty boxing mixed up with the wrestling.”
