Jake Matthews And Team Will Be Appealing Loss To Neil Magny At UFC Perth

After a controversial referee ruling saw a first-round submission for him overturned, Jake Matthews will be appealing his UFC Perth loss to Neil Magny, according to his management team.

Referee Jim Pediros appeared to wave off the fight in the first round, believing that Magny was choked out with one second remaining in the first round. Magny got to his feet and immediately protested.

Seconds later, Pediros said he was stepping in to call for the end of the round, and not to wave the fight off — despite video evidence suggesting otherwise.

“Yes, we will be appealing,” Matthews’ team said in an email statement.

Despite his initial ruling and Magny’s protests in a fight-ending sequence, video review was not utilized. The referee instead changed his mind and the fight went on.

Matthews controlled the action for the second round and had a couple of more submission attempts, but Magny pulled off a comeback submission during the third round.

Matthews saw a three-fight win streak snapped as a result of the loss.

Magny, meanwhile, extended his record for most wins in UFC welterweight division history and has now won two straight and three of his last five.

“Matthews Team Should File A Protest” – Referee Jim Perdios Gets Blasted By MMA Community After Botching Submission Call As Neil Magny Goes On To Submit Jake Matthews At UFC Perth

Neil Magny was able to come away with another come-from-behind, third-round finish at UFC Perth, defeating Jake Matthews, but it doesn’t come without much controversy courtesy of a referee’s botched call and changing his mind.

Matthews appeared to be in full control in the first round and threatened to choke out Magny as the first round was coming to a close. Referee Jim Perdios, checking Magny, appeared to rule that Magny went unconscious with one second left in the round, seemingly stepping in to declare Matthews the winner.

Magny immediately jumped to his feet in protest, and, conveniently, Perdios then ruled that the round was over and that was the reason he was stepping in.

Matthews would control the action in the second round again, threatening a couple of more submissions, but Magny came from behind to score a submission via D’Arce choke in the third.

At 30 years old, Jake Matthews really seems to be coming into his own, and that wasn’t more on display than his fast finish of Chidi Njokuani during the UFC Nashville preliminary card.

Matthews ate some strong leg kicks from Njokuani to start the action before Matthews got the action to the ground.

Njokuani got to his feet, but it wasn’t long before Matthews, on his back, locked up a choke, scoring the submission.
