“No Contest” – Dominick Reyes Beats Johnny Walker In Snoozefest

A fight at UFC 327 that no one expected to go the distance and could have fallen either way ended up being close…but not in the good way.

Boos rained down from the crowd as Dominick Reyes got his hand raised, defeating Johnny Walker via split decision at UFC 327.

Walker got off to a good start in the opening round, focusing on the leg kicks, while Reyes stayed patient, looking to use his range and timing to land strong shots from distance.

Reyes finally got to pressuring Walker in the second round, picking up his punching volume and adding in kicks to the body. Unfortunately, neither fighter seemed to show urgency in the third as they traded weak shots.

All three judges scored the fight 29-28, with two giving it to Reyes for the win.

Dominick Reyes Gets Split Decision Over Johnny Walker At UFC 327

Reyes has now won four of his last five fights. He entered tonight off a knockout loss to Carlos Ulberg at UFC Perth last September.

Walker is now winless in four of his last five fights. He came into this bout off a second-round finish of Zhang Mingyang at UFC Shanghai last August.

Johnny Walker Shares Honest Reflection On Sluggish Start Dominant Finish Over Zhang Mingyang At UFC Shanghai

Johnny Walker admitted Octagon rust affected his performance in his recent fight.

Last Saturday in Shanghai, China, Walker secured a brutal second-round TKO over Zhang Mingyang in the UFC Shanghai main event, bouncing back with a much-needed victory.

Walker got off to a rocky start, taking some heavy shots on both the feet and the ground while struggling to mount any offense in the first round. But the second round told a different story. A pair of sharp calf kicks left Mingyang limping, and moments later he crumpled to the mat.

Walker followed him to the ground, unleashing a relentless barrage of punches and elbows that steadily broke down the “Mountain Tiger”. The referee finally stepped in as Zhang rolled to his side, defenseless, ending the fight while Walker’s assault continued.

Johnny Walker Reveals Why He Looked Off His Game Early Against Zhang Mingyang At UFC Shanghai

During the UFC Shanghai post-fight show (via MMA Junkie), Johnny Walker reflected on his win over Zhang Mingyang. The Brazilian striker, returning after a year-long layoff, admitted that Octagon rust left him tentative and off-rhythm in the opening round.

However, once the second round began, Walker started finding his groove, connecting with his strikes more confidently and ultimately taking control to secure the victory.

“I feel very good,” Johnny Walker said. “I just need a little bit more time to use my full game. It’s a long time with no fights. One year, no? I got just a little bit shy and not very trusting. That’s why I hug him when I put him down. My takedown was not very effective. Long time, no fight. I lost a little bit of timing with everything.

“When the second round started to wind me up a little better. I started to move a little bit better. I started to feel the fight OK. I said, ‘OK, now it’s time to go moving forward.’ He took good shots on me, and I took my time to recover. I took three or five seconds to recover from the shots. Good, clean shots. I have a chin, motherf*ckers. This is the job. I love it.”

UFC Shanghai gave Johnny Walker his first victory since defeating former title challenger Anthony Smith via unanimous decision at UFC Charlotte in May 2023. He now boasts a UFC record of 8-6 with 1 no contest, highlighted by stoppage wins over Paul Craig and Khalil Rountree Jr.

  • 5 Hits And 4 Misses From UFC Shanghai: Johnny Walker vs. Zhang Mingyang

5 Hits And 4 Misses From UFC Shanghai: Johnny Walker vs. Zhang Mingyang

The UFC returned to China for a Fight Night event with UFC Shanghai on August 23, taking place during the early hours of the morning at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium in Shanghai, China.

This represented the UFC’s first card held in Shanghai since November 2017, a card that saw the final fight in the career of UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping, as he was knocked out by Kelvin Gastelum. This past November, the UFC held a Fight Night event in Macau, which saw Petr Yan scoring a decision over Deiveson Figueiredo.

The main event of this UFC Shanghai saw a light heavyweight showdown featuring Johnny Walker and Zhang Mingyang. Walker was looking to rebound from a three-fight losing skid, which included a no-contest and knockout loss vs. current light heavyweight champion Magomed Ankalaev and a knockout loss to Volkan Oezdemir. Mingyang, meanwhile, has scored every victory of his MMA career thus far in the first round. He’s 3-0 since entering the UFC, scoring finishes of Brendson Ribiero, Ozzy Diaz, and Anthony Smith.

The co-main event saw a pair of stars battling in a 153-pound catchweight contest, as former featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega faced former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. Ortega has lost three of his last four, stretching back to his unsuccessful challenge of Alexander Volkanovski for the featherweight title at UFC 266. Sterling moved up to 145 after losing the bantamweight title, defeating Calvin Kattar at UFC 300 but losing to Movsar Evloev at UFC 310. The fight took place at catchweight following serious weight-cut complications for Ortega.

Who showed out in China? Who faltered? Let’s find out with this edition of UFC Hits and Misses!

Hit – Uran Satybaldiev Starts The Card With UFC History

Prior to UFC Shanghai, only three people in the UFC managed to pull off a victory via Ezekiel choke — Aleksei Oleinik (who had a stellar three), Remco Pardoel, and Alexander Volknov. Uran Sarybaldiev now gets to join that list.

Going up against Diyar Nurgozhay, Sarybaldiev made things quick. He could’ve gotten him out of there in the opening minute, but Nurgozhay managed to survive getting rocked. Sarybaldiev then had a tight kimura, but again, Nurgozhay came out of it still in the fight. Sarybaldiev completely overwhelmed him, however, and managed to get on top and secure the rare submission — done, even rarer, from the top position.

It’s not every day that we get a UFC Fight Night event in an arena with fans, let alone an international one. But a finish like this definitely set the tone for what ended up being an exciting preliminary card.

Hit – Yi Zha’s Starching Left Hand Leads To KO Success

Uran Satybaldiev wasn’t the only prelim fighter with a quick finish, as Yi Zha probably saw that and said “I can top that” — doing so with his sub-minute finish of Westin Wilson.

Zha was locked in, nailing Wilson with a left hand that stunned and dropped him. Wilson made it back to his feet, but not for long. Zha cracked him with a hard combination during his flurry of offense that put Wilson away for good in about 37 seconds.

Zha has a history of first-round finishes, but most of them have been by submission. You’d have to go back to his 2019 second-round finish of Tenglige to find his last KO/TKO win prior to UFC Shanghai.

Zha has been featured in more Road to UFC cards than actual UFC Fight Nights; however, hopefully this gives us a taste that we can see more from Zha in the future.

Hit – Kyle Daukaus Says “I’m Back!”

I could give a miss here for Michel Pereira suffering his third straight loss, but I feel that’d be taking away from the bigger story. Once upon time, the Daukaus brothers were prominent prospects in the UFC. But things didn’t work out and both were released.

On late notice, however, Kyle Daukaus made the most of his second chance, finishing Pereira in just 43 seconds.

Daukaus quickly landed a right hand that dropped Pereira, and down came the ground-and-pound right after. A pair of elbows in particular were enough to put Pereira’s lights out and force Herb Dean to halt the action.

Since his first UFC run ended, Daukaus is now 4-0 and has been the CFFC welterweight champion. It has been an awesome redemption road built, and hopefully Daukaus will get to continue that momentum in his next UFC bout.

In the words of his walkout song, indeed, “The boys are back in town.”

Hit – Never Count Out Charles Johnson — Especially Against Prospects

Some have considered Charles Johnson to be one of the most underrated flyweights in the UFC, and for good reason. Just look at what he did when he and Lone’er Kavanagh faced off during the prelims.

Kavanagh was laying it into Johnson in the first round of the fight. There were a couple of times during that round where it looked like Kavanagh would finish him. After surviving a guillotine attempt during round two, Johnson was pressuring back. And it was a pair of elbows that changed everything. As Kavanagh was moving back with his hands down, Johnson saw the opening and took advantage, cracking Kavanagh and dropping him out cold to take his 0.

Johnson has held his own with some solid talent that 125 has to offer, and no one should be writing him off any more. In fact, throw him in there with a top-10 opponent next outing, and let’s see what he’s got against them.

Miss – Lone’er Kavanagh Probably Kicking Himself After KO Loss

It’s perhaps the most important rule in martial arts, mixed or not — protect yourself at all times, and that means keeping your hands up.

Lone’er Kavanagh was in control for a lot of this fight. But a tough veteran like Charles Johnson doesn’t go away easy. And sometimes in this sport, all it takes is that one moment where you let your guard down, that one moment of weakness, that one mistake. Kavanagh committed it, Johnson saw his opportunity, and Johnson took the win.

It’s a painful experience for Kavanagh, but hopefully he comes back a stronger, better fighter for this. Sometimes we, not just as fighters, but as humans, need to eat our Ls in order to grow. I hope that’s what happens for Kavanagh here.

Miss – Kiefer Crosbie’s Heart, MMA Stigma Gets Him Punished

This one is just sad. Bless Kiefer Crosbie for wanting to channel the spirit of Anthony Smith and not just take the DQ win. But maybe he should have, because after getting hit with the illegal shot, he was quickly stopped by Taiyilake Nueraji.

Crosbie was hit with an illegal knee in the first round and was bloodied. He seemed out of it, but the doctor cleared him, and Crosbie elected to continue. About 30 seconds later, the fight was over, with Nueraji taking advantage of the situation for an easy TKO.

Unfortunately, this was a no-win situation. The toxic cesspool known as the MMA fanbase is harping on him for not taking the DQ win. But what if he had done so? I guarantee people would have been telling him he’s a coward, not a man, and a whole bunch of terms I can’t say on this professional platform. And don’t tell he wouldn’t have, because, you, dear reader, know people would have.

And the sad part is Crosbie is now 0-3 in the UFC, so he’s liable to get cut. I hope not; that would be cruel of Dana White and company to do. I think they need to give him another opportunity to make up for this really bad situation. And it would be priceless (yes, in a bad way) if someone (be it White or anyone in this MMA space), who praised Anthony Smith when he didn’t take the easy DQ win against Jon Jones at UFC 235, and who are part of this mindset of wanting tough-guy fighters with a lot of grit and fight in them, shame Kiefer Crosbie for his choice in that Octagon.

Now…if we’re going to blame someone other than Crosbie, why is Marc Goddard getting a lot of blame? We talk about lack of accountability for officials and the frustration of referee mistakes, and here’s Goddard actually taking two points — a rarity in this sport. And it was the right move! If the doctor cleared Crosbie, then isn’t it Crosbie’s choice. I, personally, would like to know what the ringside physician was thinking to clear him quickly and not encourage Crosbie and Goddard to give Crosbie more of the allotted five minutes than Crosbie took? What even made the physician decide that Crosbie could continue?

And for those who say “Well, good, because I don’t like all this extra waiting around, especially when I’m up in the early hours of the morning when I didn’t have to…” — I say zip it. When you’re the fouled fighter in the Octagon, you let me know. Then let’s see how your opinion stands.

Miss – The Struggles Of Lack Of Heavyweight Talent Continues

Sergei Pavlovich vs. Waldo Cortes-Acosta was positioned as an important matchup when it comes to the heavyweight title picture, since they entered Nos. 3 and 6, respectively, in the heavyweight rankings. All this matchup ended up doing was showing just how lifeless the UFC’s heavyweight division is.

Pavlovich landed the heavier and cleaner strikes throughout the fight, damaging Cortes-Acosta but not doing enough to score the finish. Cortes-Acosta barely found his rhythm, with perhaps the exception for the third round. And while Pavlovich was methodical in his punching, it was a performance that didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

I get it; both men were looking for prime division in the heavyweight title picture (which is easier to grab these days than previous). But when the bar you clear as a fight is, Derrick Lewis vs. Francis Ngannou, then I think there’s an issue. And it doesn’t make me want to see Tom Aspinall vs. Sergei Pavlovich 2 anytime soon.

Man, you consider this fight, with some of the supposed best heavyweight has to offer, combined with Jon Jones wasting months of Tom Aspinall’s prime, I really feel bad for Aspinall.

Miss – Brian Ortega’s Weight Mishap And The Co-Main Event That Shouldn’t Have Been

Let’s be serious and clear: No way in heck should this fight have happened. None. Whatsoever. Brian Ortega looked terrible on the scales, and he looked terrible in this fight. Heck, this fight was just plain bad, period, and after Ortega’s mishap, it should have been moved to three rounds.

Ortega was completely outstruck 23-2 in the opening round, and that pretty much set the pace for the entirety of the first four rounds. Ortega did land a rocking shot in the fifth and desperately tried for a triangle choke in that same round, but he was completely no match for Sterling.

It wasn’t exactly a win that’d give Sterling a future title shot, but with another win or two, he’s probably challenging Volkanovski (or whoever holds the gold at that point). At this point, I’d just like to know the full story as to what happened with that weight cut. And regardless, Brian Ortega should be fighting at lightweight from this point forward, no exceptions or excuses.

Hit – Johnny Walker: The Most Unpredictable

There are times when Johnny Walker doesn’t look great. And then there are times like the UFC Shanghai main event, where he delivers a highlight finish and shows the potential most saw in him back when he made his UFC debut in 2019.

The thing is it didn’t look that way when Walker faked a glove touch to try and score a takedown. Zhang Mingyang easily placed him on his back and pounded on him, looking like he’d extend his streak of first-round finishes. Walker survived the storm, however, and in the second round, his chopping low kicks did a number on Mingyang. Mingyang appeared to be injured by one of his kicks, which Walker followed up with some ground strikes before the fight was stopped.

Walker now snaps a three-fight winless skid, and if he can pull off a win over a top-10 contender in his next outing, he’d prove that he’s once again a viable name in the light heavyweight title picture.

  • “The Most Unpredictable UFC Fighter Of All Time” – Fans React As Johnny Walker Stops First-Round Winning Streak Of Zhang Mingyang At UFC Shanghai

“The Most Unpredictable UFC Fighter Of All Time” – Fans React As Johnny Walker Stops First-Round Winning Streak Of Zhang Mingyang At UFC Shanghai

Those who wrote the story of Johnny Walker’s demise appear to have been mistaken, as he was able to finish Zhang Mingyang in the main event of UFC Shanghai.

As Mingyang put out a hand for a handshake at the fight’s start, Walker attempted to score a takedown, only for Mingyang to easily place him on his back. Mingyang controlled the action on the ground well before tagging Walker on the feet. Walker responded to a wobbling right hand by trying to clinch Mingyang up and take him down. Walker attempted to bring his own power and use angles, but Mingyang landed a sharp elbow and continued to cut off the cage.

The pace continued throughout the second round, with Walker trying to find success with the calf kick. One of them did find that success for him, putting Mingyang in great pain and sending him to the mat. Walker pounded away with strikes, overwhelming Mingyang, who tried but couldn’t get back to his feet, resulting in a second-round TKO.

Johnny Walker Stops Zhang Mingyang in UFC Shanghai Main Event

This win snapped a three-fight winless skid for Walker, who had gone to a no-contest and lost against current light heavyweight champ Magomed Ankalev and was knocked out by Volkan Oezdemir.

Mingyang had entered tonight’s bout with a 12-fight win streak, with all of his wins coming via a first-round finish. He was 3-0 in the UFC entering tonight with wins over Brendson Ribeiro, Ozzy Diaz, and Anthony Smith.

UFC Fight Night Results & Highlights: Johnny Walker Ends Zhang Mingyang’s Winning Streak

UFC Fight Night: Johnny Walker vs. Zhang Mingyang (aka UFC Shanghai) takes place in the early hours of Saturday morning, August 23, and MMA News has you covered with all the action!

After a pay-per-view card in Chicago that saw the crowning of a new UFC middleweight champion, the MMA leader touches down in Shanghai for the first time since 2017, following a Fight Night held in Macau last November.

The main event saw Johnny Walker breaking his own winless skid while snapping the long winning streak of Zhang Mingyang. Though Walker had a bizarre takedown attempt to start the fight, and Mingyang controlled the action in the first round with his strikes, a calf kick changed things in the second. One of Walker’s calf kicks caused Mingyang to go to the mat in pain, and Walker swarmed the Chinese fighter. Mingyang’s efforts to defend and get back to his feet were for naught, and Walker scored the second round finish.

The co-main event of the evening saw Aljamain Sterling win a bizarre and lackluster 153-pound catchweight contest with Brian Ortega. Ortega, who already had plenty of controversy surrounding him and his concerning weight cut, put up little offense until a flurry and desperate submission efforts in the fifth round. Sterling went on to sweep the scorecards.

The rest of the main card saw Sergei Pavlovich defeat Waldo Cortes-Acosta, Su Mudaerij earn a decision over Kevin Borjas, and Taiyilake Nueraji defeat Keifer Crosbie.

UFC Shanghai: Johnny Walker vs. Zhang Mingyang Weigh-In Results

UFC Fight Night: Johnny Walker vs. Zhang Mingyang takes place on Saturday, and MMA News is here to bring you the official weigh-in results.

Held at Shanghai Indoor Stadium in Shanghai, China, this is the second time in UFC history that the promotion will hold a card in mainland China. The first instance came back in November 2017, a night that saw Kelvin Gastelum knock out Michael Bisping in what ultimately became the final fight in Bisping’s career. Last year, the UFC held a card in Macau, China, headlined by Petr Yan defeating Deiveson Figueiredo.

This time around, UFC Shanghai will be topped by light heavyweight action featuring Johnny Walker and Zhang Mingyang.

Walker is winless in his last three fights, and this will be his first fight since UFC Saudi Arabia in June 2024. Walker had both a no contest and knockout loss to current light heavyweight champion Magomed Ankalaev at, respectively, UFC 294 and UFC Vegas 84, before getting knocked out by Volkan Oezdemir at UFC Saudi Arabia.

Mingyang is 3-0 in the UFC since coming into the promotion off a knockout win on the first-ever Road to UFC episode. Since then, Mingyang has scored finishes of Brendson Ribeiro, Ozzy Diaz, and Anthony Smith.

The co-main event will feature former featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega in action against former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. Ortega has lost three of his last four, most recently dropping a decision to Diego Lopes at Noche UFC 2: UFC 306 this past September. Sterling is 1-1 since moving up to 145 after losing his 135-pound title, defeating Calvin Kattar at UFC 300 but losing to Movsar Evloev at UFC 310.

Elsewhere, the likes of Sergei Pavlovich, Waldo Cortes-Acosra, Su Mudaerji, and Taiyilake Nueraji will all be in action.

  • Johnny Walker Has Been Learning the Chinese Language To Better Connect with the Shanghai Audience

Johnny Walker Has Been Learning the Chinese Language To Better Connect with the Shanghai Audience

Johnny Walker feels confident he can get the crowd on his side as he endeavours to learn more Chinese to better endear himself to the Shanghai crowd on Saturday. Speaking on MMA Junkie Radio ahead of his UFC Fight Night 257 headliner, the 33 year-old combatant spoke about his journey with the local language ahead of his clash with Zhang Mingyang this weekend.

This is a high stakes clash in the light heavyweight division with Walker vs. Mingyang pitting the number thirteen contender agaisnt the number fourteen ranked light heavyweight, respectively. When describing his desire to connect with the Chinese fanbase and his broader vision of thingsbeyond August 23rd, Johnny Walker said,

“Wherever I go in the world, I feel at home. I see the Chinese here, they all like me, you know. I’m learning a little bit of Chinese as well to connect with the fans already. And I can’t wait to come back to China to fight again. I’m going to get the crowd on my side too and I’m going to do a good job here because it’s a good place to be, China, big market, and it’s really a good city, has good food, good everything here as well.”

“Even if they’re not, they’re going to be on my side after, because I’m going to win this fight and I’m going to conquer the crowd for sure. And the dream of the Chinese belt championship is going to still live in me, you know? I can bring the belt back here when I get it.”

“Of course, I’ve been practicing my Chinese a bit and I know some Chinese words, and one is very special that is going to connect with the crowd.”

“Wherever I go in the world, I feel at home. The Chinese fans are amazing, they like me. I’m already learning some Chinese to connect with them. I can’t wait to come back and fight again here.”

Johnny Walker’s Xtreme Couture shift was ‘one of the best moves for my career’

Johnny Walker has been trying out some newer things lately beyond learning a new language and that extends to a change in what gym he hones his skills at. The Brazilian combatant has been working out of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas as of late and describing in the same MMA Junkie Radio interview how much of a difference just being in Vegas in general has made for him, Walker stated [via MMA Junkie],

“It was a very good move, one of the best moves I did for my career. Not just because of Xtreme but because of the UFC Performance Institute. Of course, Eric is an amazing coach. He’s been an amazing add to my career. A lot of big guys there to train [with]. Performance Institute have breakfast, lunch, dinner, physiotherapy, recovery, strength and conditioning, so everything I need to achieve the next level. I’m very happy. That was my best training camp that I did, and I just feel very excited and amazing.”

  • Johnny Walker’s UFC Return Set To Come Against Undefeated Russian On May 17

UFC light heavyweight contender Johnny Walker will look to get back on track when he returns to action on May 17.

After having his plans for fight against Bogdan Guskov at UFC 311 this past January scuppered by injury, the Brazilian veteran’s layoff is approaching nine months.

But per MMA Junkie, Walker (21-9, 1 NC) won’t have too much longer to wait, with the 32-year-old set to face the undefeated Azamat Murzakanov (14-0) at the UFC Fight Night event on May 17.

For the #10-ranked Johnny Walker, the bout will mark his latest opportunity at recording a first win since he defeated Anthony Smith in May 2023. The Brazilian has since gone winless across three fights, with a no contest against Magomed Ankalaev followed by two brutal knockouts versus the Dagestani in their rematch and Volkan Oezdemir.

Azamat Murzakanov, meanwhile, had his first fight in 16 months last August. The Russia reminded the division of his presence with a vicious KO victory over Alonzo Menifield to extend his UFC record to 4-0 and rise to #12 in the rankings.

With this addition, the current fights expected to take place at the UFC Fight Night on May 17 are as follows:

    • Curtis Blaydes vs. Rizvan Kuniev (heavyweight)
    • Johnny Walker vs. Azamat Murzakanov (light heavyweight)
    • Serghei Spivac vs. Shamil Gaziev (heavyweight)
    • JunYong Park vs. Ismail Naurdiev (middleweight)
    • Mohammed Usman vs. Hamdy Abdelwahab (heavyweight)
  • Johnny Walker Explains Decision To Leave John Kavanagh’s SBG Ireland: ‘Environment Wasn’t Perfect For MMA’

Johnny Walker Explains Decision To Leave John Kavanagh’s SBG Ireland: ‘Environment Wasn’t Perfect For MMA’

Johnny Walker put a lot into his scheduled return at UFC 311 following some big changes that have taken place in his life and career. Unfortunately, the light heavyweight contender was unable to reap the rewards of his hard work after a rib injury forced him to withdraw from his prelim bout against Bogdan Guskov.

The Brazilian is currently coming off of consecutive losses following an up and down trajectory in recent years. During that time frame, he was training out of SBG Dublin under John Kavanagh and Walker is very grateful of this experience. However, there were some key areas that he didn’t feel like he was fulfilling in his preparations whilst being based out of Ireland in recent times.

After spending some time at different gyms, his led him to moving his entire life to Las Vegas where in the combat sports capital of the world, he has everything he could possibly need at his finger tips. Walker gave two specific examples during a recent interview with MMA Junkie regarding holes in his training camp that had recently appeared.

The 32-year old believes that his last defeat inside the Octagon came about because of one specific reason with another key factor being his lack of training partners. Walker did have a small stable of guys to work with at one point whilst he was training in Dublin but that hasn’t been the case as time has gone on and finding bodies to work with at Xtreme Couture is not exactly difficult.

“We had the best coach there. John was a very high-level coach,” Walker said. “He did the best for me. He improved my game a lot, but I just had one or two training partners. The last fight against (Volkan) Oezdemir, I was adapting myself to get ready as best as I could for the fight. I was doing boxing sparring in the ring. … In the fight, you can see I brought him close to the fence, which was wrong because I was sparring in the ring. You can’t spar in the ring and fight in the octagon. It’s totally different. In the octagon, if you step close to the fence, the guy is going to take you down, or the guy is going to knock you out because when you’re close to the fence, it’s the worst place to be. The guy (Oezdemir) knocked me out because I brought him to the fence.

“This is the worst thing you can do in MMA. The environment wasn’t perfect for MMA. At SBG, I had just one training partner. Here in Vegas, I have the UFC PI for strength and conditioning, for nutrition, for recovery. At Xtreme Couture, I have high-level guys between top 10 and top 15. Light heavyweight and heavyweight, and Sean Strickland. Every day I have a high-level guy to train with. You need challenges, and now at Xtreme, I have that challenge. …I have everything now for recovery, for nutrition, for training, coaching. Now the light heavyweights are in trouble. Now you’re going to have the best version of Johnny Walker because I’m just going to be better. Now my career is going to fly.”

  • UFC Matchmaking Bulletin: Johnny Walker Out Of UFC 311, Replacement Revealed

MMA News has you covered with this week’s UFC matchmaking bulletin, featuring all the additions to upcoming fight cards.

With events being held most weekends, Mick Maynard and Sean Shelby have their matchmaking work cut out if they’re to fill them, meaning new bouts are confirmed each and every week.

Between Monday, January 6, and Sunday, January 12, a few notable fights were made official by the UFC or reported as being in the works by reputable sources. For more information on those matchups, see the links below:

Plenty of lower-profile bouts also came together. For those, check out the list below:

But it wasn’t all positive, with a number of fights falling through or getting adjusted:

  • Johnny Walker vs. Bogdan Guskov Added To UFC 311 On January 18

Johnny Walker vs. Bogdan Guskov Added To UFC 311 On January 18

UFC light heavyweight contender Johnny Walker will have the chance to snap his difficult winless run at the very first pay-per-view event of 2025.

Walker (21-9, 1 NC) hasn’t had his hand raised since a decision victory over Anthony Smith put him on a three-fight win streak. After a no contest against Magomed Ankalaev halted his title ambitions last year, two devastating results in 2025 have well and truly dashed them.

Following a brutal knockout loss to Ankalaev in their immediate rematch this past January, the Brazilian fell to a similar fate at the hands of Volkan Oezdemir in Saudi Arabia five months later.

If he’s to rebound from those results, Walker will have to avoid the big shots of another of the division’s hardest hitters early next year.

Per Red Corner MMA, the #9-ranked contender is set to defend his place inside the top 10 opposite Bogdan Guskov (16-3) at UFC 311 on Jan. 18.

Since falling to a submission against Oezdemir in a short-notice debut in Paris 13 months ago, “Czarevitch” has put his ferocious power on full display, stopping both Zac Pauga and Ryan Spann inside the distance.

And having broken into the rankings with his triumph over “Superman,” the Uzbekistani brawler will now have his sights on Walker’s top-10 spot at 205 pounds.

The UFC 311 event currently doesn’t have a confirmed location and venue, but Los Angeles is rumored to be hosting the year-opening PPV.

Junior Tafa On Fighting Johnny Walker’s Brother At UFC 305: ‘I’d Like To Fight Both The Walker Brothers…’

In a rare situation at UFC 305, two fighters that have siblings also on the roster, will come face-to-face in the featured prelim.

Junior Tafa is looking for his second UFC win after being stopped earlier this year by Marcos Rogério de Lima at UFC 298.

His older brother Justin is the more experienced of the two men, with a total of nine Octagon appearances under his belt.

The same dynamic can be found in the household of his opponent with Valter Walker looking to bounce back from a debut defeat in April.

In comparison, his older brother Johnny Walker is a 14-fight UFC veteran and a staple of the light heavyweight division.

Despite the difference in weight classes between them, the younger of the Tafa brothers hopes that he can run through a Walker family gauntlet in his coming fights.

Junior Tafa Says He’d Like To Fight Both Of The ‘Cool Cat’ Walker Brothers

During his media day interview ahead of his clash with Walker this weekend in Perth, Tafa gave his opinion on his opponent’s brother.

He said that he would be very keen on the idea of facing both of them during his UFC tenure which would be possible with his aspirations of competing at 205-pounds.

“Yeah preparation is good, watched a little bit of tape but yeah, I’d like to fight both of the Walker brothers if I could. I want to campaign down to light heavyweight and his brother would like to come after too.”

Tafa then clarified that he has no personal vendetta against this particular family or the fighters they produce and if anything, wants to fight them because he’s a fan of what they do.

“I’m a fan of their fighting style, they’re cool cats you know but, be cool to do both of them ay.”

‘Ain’t Gonna Help The Glass Chin But Sure’ – MMA Fans React As Johnny Walker Ditches Conor McGregor’s Gym To Train With Khabib Nurmagomedov

Having spent time earlier in his career training in both Scotland and England, Johnny Walker eventually found his way to SBG Dublin in Ireland.

Joining the gym in 2020 after facing some adversity following his rapid climb up the light heavyweight rankings, the Brazilian has spent the majority of his UFC tenure with this team.

Here Walker would develop a great relationship with head coach John Kavanagh, who is most well known for being the main man in the corner of Conor McGregor.

However, following another patch of difficult results, it looks like the knockout artist is now looking to take himself out of his comfort zone once again.

Recent photos that were posted by “iamthebay” on Instagram show a training session at the American Kickboxing Academy, or AKA, in California.

Here, Walker can be seen getting some work in with the likes of Khabib and Usman Nurmagomedov, as well as the UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev.

MMA Fans React To Johnny Walker Training Alongside Khabib Nurmagomedov After Years At SBG

Walker has always been a fighter that generates talking points both in and out of the cage and this has now extended to his training.

Though it’s far from uncommon to see fighters move between top gyms during their careers, you won’t see many that switch from McGregor’s home base to that of his arch rival’s.

In Walker’s case, working with some of the top grapplers in the sport could help to round out his skill set, making this invaluable training for him.

MMA fans reacted on social media to the images of Walker and Nurmagomedov sharing a mat together.

“If Johnny comes into his next fight with a chin I’m heading to dagestan”

“Ain’t gonna help the Glass chin but sure”

“Good idea to change his fighting style”

“Johnny Walker will become Dessert Eagle”

“If he leaves John Kavanagh for Khabib and AKA, he can maybe turn his career around”

“I know Conor is big mad seeing this. Walker was training at SBG, which is Conor’s gym now hes training at AKA, which is Khabib’s gym…”

“The best move, as proven with all the fighters that go train with them”

Nate Diaz & Jorge Masvidal Fight Day Weigh-Ins Show Drastic Difference

With the California State Athletic Commission looking to cut down on excessive weight cutting in combat sports, the fight nights weights for the recent Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal boxing match were released.

The most noteworthy result shows that Jorge Masvidal made a staggering near 30-pound gain between weighing in and showing up on fight night.

After hitting 175.2 pounds on Friday, he then weighed in at 204.1 pounds, which is a 16 percent increase in body weight.

Diaz, who won the fight via majority decision, gained 14.6 pounds after coming in on Saturday at 190.2, meaning that he put on half as much weight as his opponent.

Masvidal competed at both 155 and 170 pounds during his tenure in the UFC. By the time he stepped inside the ring this past weekend, he was closer to the light heavyweight mark.

Johnny Walker Receives Pushback After Posting Dinosaur Extinction Theory

It’s an understatement to call Brazil’s Johnny Walker one of the most unpredictable characters in MMA today.

He recently gathered some attention on social media after he responded to an Instagram post from MMA great Georges St-Pierre.

“GSP” shared a video about the dinosaurs and how they were made extinct and largely wiped off the face of the earth by an asteroid.

Walker, in the replies to the post, provided his own theory about how it wasn’t an asteroid that killed them off, but perhaps humans did it instead…

“Sorry champ but i am not sure about it anymore! I don’t believe that a asteroid ☄️ extinguished the dinosaurs 🦖 , it may be the men , take a look at some saints around the world like the flat of Russia that have a dragon and a guy that probably kill lots of it , and Brasil also have a saint , and lots of other cultures have history about some hero that killed a dragon = Dino 🦖! I’m just saying, history always change and the winner of some war tells his side of the truth ! We never know the actually real truth”

It didn’t take too long before fans took notice of his comment and gave their sceptical reactions to his take.

The Last Man To Defeat Alex Pereira In Kickboxing Breaks Down His Weaknesses As A Striker

Alex Pereira has been on an incredible upwards trajectory since making the switch to MMA, but what some fight fans might not know is that he suffered a defeat in his final kickboxing fight.

After losing a split decision the first time around, Artem Vakhitov got the better of “Poatan” in the rematch before Pereira made the decision to leave Glory behind to really pursue MMA.

Vakhitov, who has also been trying his hand at MMA as of late, spoke in a recent interview with MMA Fighting about where he believes Pereira is vulnerable, having been one of the few to outstrike him.

He said that the UFC light heavyweight champion’s greatest strength is also his greatest weakness, but the issue many of his MMA opponents have is that they’re not confident enough to try and exploit it.

“His biggest weakness is that he is all attack, he has no defense,” Vakhitov said. “Because of his lack of defense, he is open to taking a lot of punches to the head if he’s facing a skilled striker. You saw that in his second fight with Adesanya. He got caught because he leaves a lot of openings for people who know what they are doing.

“These other guys haven’t done well against Alex because their striking isn’t at a high enough level. They aren’t confident against him and they think he’s unbeatable, so in their heart they are already defeated before the fight starts,” Vakhitov continued. “But I have beaten him before in pure striking competition, and I am sure I’ll do it again if we can get our trilogy match in the UFC.”

  • Johnny Walker’s Fiancée Comes To His Defense Against Trolls Following Loss

Johnny Walker’s fiancée, Tara Campbell, has come to his defense against haters.

Saturday night was not Johhny Walker’s night. Walker lost a vicious KO to Jamahal Hill in the main event of UFC Vegas 48. As with most brutal knockouts, the image of Walker laying on the mat went viral. He was unfortunate in the loss, but the hits just kept on coming.

Following the loss, haters began to chime in. Walker came into the UFC with such hype around him that many believed that he would have been a UFC champion one day. Although he still very well might be, his career has taken a turn for the worse lately.

This loss was the second in a row and the fourth in five fights. Walker addressed fans after the fight, but as he was still receiving terrible messages, his fiancée Tara Campbell decided to take matters into her own hands with a post of her own.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CaRMl5hrzPM/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=f2e8f9ea-3692-4d99-b5fc-757f0f486624

“And just a note in response to the onslaught of comments online. And the disgusting DMs I’ve received from fake or private accounts antagonising me, and/or ridiculing Johnny. How f–king dare you?” She wrote. “This is a sport. No one but the athletes and their inner circle know the sacrifices the athletes make. The effort and dedication that goes into a camp. The training. The early mornings. The late nights. The diet. The sleep. The recovery. The impact it has on those around them. The mentality.”

In the aftermath of the fight, Walker posted a video of himself with his coach John Kavanagh enjoying some food and drinks. This was received poorly by fans who claimed that he was not taking his training or the loss seriously. Campbell continues to scold those who claim Walker was slacking.

“But before you comment, ask yourself. When was the last time you pushed your body to its limits with training? With diet? With mentality?” she wrote. “I know these keyboard warriors probably haven’t broken a sweat in their life and live their pathetic existence through fake or private accounts. And they probably think their comments or posts won’t be seen. But I can tell you while Johnny was in the ER, and I was in the waiting room alone- I saw the comments. I got the messages. And on a good day, it’s water off a ducks back. But on days like Saturday- they were tough.”

Walker took his training to Ireland to fix holes in his game and work with some of the best out there. He will continue to train and work his way back. Despite the loss, he is still one of the best at 205 pounds.

Do you think Johnny Walker is catching too much heat for the loss at UFC Vegas 48?

  • Johnny Walker Addresses Fans Following Violent Knockout Loss

UFC light heavyweight contender Johnny Walker has spoken out for the first time since his knockout loss to Jamahal Hill at UFC Vegas 48.

Walker has now lost four of his last five fights after the brutal knockout to Hill in his second-straight UFC main event. He had lost to former title challenger Thiago Santos in his last outing via a unanimous decision.

Walker and Hill slugged it out in the opening minutes of the fight before Hill caught Walker with a massive right hand that sent Walker falling backward and onto the canvas below. Hill has rebounded with back-to-back wins since his first UFC loss to Paul Craig.

In a recent Instagram post, Walker updated his fans on his health following the loss and where he plans to go from here.

“I’m OK,” Walker said. “Just a little cut. I (go to) sleep in the fight, so something happened wrong.

“Let’s eat and be happy. And let’s go to the next one.”

Walker made his UFC debut against Khalil Rountree in 2018 following his appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series. He began his UFC career with three-straight wins over the likes of Rountree, Justin Ledet, and Misha Cirkunov.

But things have taken a different turn for Walker since his last winning streak. He has suffered lopsided defeats at the hands of Nikita Krylov and Corey Anderson before bouncing back with a win over Ryan Spann.

At 29 years old, Walker still has plenty of time to get back on track in his UFC tenure. However, it’ll take a lot for him to work out of his series of recent struggles inside the cage.

What do you think is next for Johnny Walker’s UFC career?

He previously picked up KO wins over the likes of Khalil Rountree Jr. and Justin Ledet, as well as Misha Cirkunov on March 2, 2019, at UFC 235 via TKO in the first round. Hill entered this fight with a 9-1-1 record. He earned his way to the promotion through Dana White’s Contender’s Series. He went to a no contest with Klidson Abreu at UFC on ESPN 9 then beat Ovince Saint Preux by TKO in December 2020. He lost to Paul Craig by TKO at UFC 263 and then beat Jimmy Crute by KO in December 2021.

  • (Archives) Bisping: Johnny Walker Is The Biggest Threat To Jones (2019)

Three years ago, Johnny Walker was viewed as the biggest threat to Jon Jones’ rule over the UFC’s light heavyweight division. Since the following article was written, he has gone 1-3 in his last four fights. Tonight at UFC Vegas 48, Walker will be headlining against Jamahal Hill with an opportunity to remind the world of his potential.

The following article is presented to you in its original, unaltered form, courtesy of The MMA News Archives.

    [ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED JULY 19, 2019, 1:41 PM]

Headlines: Michael Bisping: I Think Biggest Threat To Jon Jones Is Johnny Walker

    Author: Fernando Quiles Jr.

UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping feels Johnny Walker may have the best shot at dethroning Jon Jones.

Walker has been making a name for himself in a short amount of time. Walker has only had three fights in the UFC, but there’s already buzz surrounding the 27-year-old Brazilian bruiser. All three of Walker’s UFC wins have come via KO or TKO. None of those bouts made it to the two-minute mark. He’s also riding a nine-fight winning streak and hasn’t lost since June 2016.

Bisping Says Walker Is Credible Threat To Jones

Bisping has responded to Jones saying that Walker isn’t quite ready for a title opportunity. “The Count” agrees, but he still believes that Walker may pose the toughest challenge for “Bones.” Here’s what he had to say on his Believe You Me podcast.

“I think the biggest threat right now to Jon Jones is Johnny Walker. I think Johnny Walker gives him a lot of problems, but I understand it from Jones’ perspective. He’s still not well-known enough to the average MMA fan. He’s had a big splash, he’s had a few big wins in very, very quick time. And in fact, he’s injured right now because he injured himself with his post-fight celebration. That’s the most damage he takes in his fights, in his own f*cking celebrations.”

Bisping went on to talk about the benefits of not hot-shotting Walker to a title opportunity.

“But he’s not there yet. He needs another win or two. For one I think it would be rushing Johnny Walker and potentially bringing him on a little too far, too soon. And Jones is right. Another couple more wins, put him in a co-main event, even a Fight Night main event against a big name and then all of a sudden you’ve got a real star on your hands. And then that makes the pay-per-view bigger for everybody involved. So, I agree with Jones.”

  • UFC Vegas 48: Walker vs. Hill Preview, Weigh-In Results, & Face-Off

UFC Vegas 48: Walker vs. Hill takes place tomorrow night from the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the main event, #10-ranked Johnny Walker will look to get back on track by defeating #10-ranked Jamahal Hill.

This main event features two of the best KO artists in the UFC’s light heavyweight division. 7 and Hill’s 9 career victories have come by KO as well as 15 of Walker’s 18 wins. Combined, these two highlight reels have a combined 81% finish rate.

Known for his unorthodox movement and unpredictability, Johnny Walker has been considered to be one of the wildest and most entertaining fighters in the UFC. However, in his last fight, we saw a much more conservative approach in his fight against Thiago Santos. Jamahal Hill has stated that he is more than ready for either side of Walker, whether it’s the “wild” version or the “calculated” version. Hill is 9-1 as a pro and his only loss came against Paul Craig at UFC 263, with Hill suffering a dislocated arm towards the end of the contest. Hill was able to bounce back from that loss with a first-round KO of Jimmy Crute last December.

  • Johnny Walker Promises Return Of “Explosive” & “Unpredictable” Walker

UFC light heavyweight contender Johnny Walker is expecting to deliver an “explosive” and “unpredictable” performance against Jamahal Hill this weekend.

Throughout his UFC career so far, we’ve pretty much come to expect those words to be incorporated into Walker’s game plan. From his brutal elbows against Khalil Rountree to his flying knee against Misha Cirkunov, not many fighters on the promotion’s roster, barring his compatriot Michel Pereira, have fans waiting for something crazy quite like the #10-ranked 205lber.

However, that was far from the case in his last outing. In the UFC Vegas 38 main event last October, Walker had his chance to break through into the elite of the division against former title challenger Thiago Santos. What was billed as a five-round thriller turned out to be the opposite, and saw the 29-year-old fall on the wrong side of a unanimous decision verdict.

Now set for another main event chance this Saturday thanks to the postponement of Rafael dos Anjos vs. Rafael Fiziev, Walker will be hoping to return to the win column, and to his unique and enthralling approach, against fellow rising contender Hill.

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Walker suggested sharing the Octagon with a fellow Brazilian last time out may have played a part in his toned-down performance.

With that not being an issue this time around, the Rio de Janeiro native is targeting a return to his “explosive” style on February 19.

“I’ve trained so much. I’m gonna put everything on the edge of my glove this Saturday,” said Walker. “And I’m gonna do my best. I’m gonna be very professional. I’m gonna use all my level, all my experience. I’m gonna be explosive, I’m gonna be unpredictable, I’m gonna use all my weapons, and I’m gonna take my time as well. I’m just gonna be another level.”

    Walker Expects An Early Finish

Despite suggesting he’ll be taking his time and not going too crazy inside the Apex on Saturday, Walker did still predict an early finish, especially if Hill decides to throw everything at him from the get-go.

“I have no idea (how many rounds), I don’t ask, I just wanna fight. I don’t care if it’s three, five; I can fight 20 rounds,” claimed Walker. “I don’t need that much (five). If this guy (Hill) wants to come with everything then I will as well, so I’m gonna finish the fight early.”

While Walker certainly presents a unique challenge to anyone when he’s at his best and most bizarre self, Hill told MMA News he’s preparing for everything.

Fresh off a knockout against Jimmy Crute, and having seen his rival be finished by Corey Anderson and heavily rocked by Ryan Spann, “Sweet Dreams” will have plans of his own for a quick night at UFC Vegas 48.

Who do you think will have their hand raised in this weekend’s main event, Johnny Walker or Jamahal Hill?

Jamahal Hill is quickly rising up the light heavyweight rankings. He has his next assignment right ahead of him when he takes on Johnny Walker this weekend at UFC Vegas 48. That fight was bumped up to the main event when the scheduled bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Rafael Fiziev was pushed to another card.

Coming into this fight with Walker, Hill doesn’t quite know what to expect. He sat down for an exclusive interview with MMA News to discuss the bout.

“I’m expecting, I don’t know man. Honestly, I know there’s only a couple ways, one of two ways he’s gonna come in. He’s gonna come in wild and crazy, or he’s gonna come in and try and be calculated and try to set things up,” Hill said. “Those are the two things. I’m preparing for whatever, I’m preparing for everything. Because I’m not in his camp, I don’t know what he’s gonna do. I don’t know what they’re working on or what they think they see, what holes they see. I’m preparing for everything.”

Hill is coming into this bout having won his last outing against Jimmy Crute. Prior to that win, Hill lost to Paul Craig and during the bout, suffered a nasty arm injury that kept him out of competition for a while. Now that he is back in the win column and healed up, Hill is looking to make a run for a title shot. A win over Walker could be a great way to get there.

Walker had a great run going in the UFC and was close to a title shot himself before hitting a bit of a skid. He has now lost three of his last four and dropped to number ten in the rankings. Hill is currently sitting in the number 12 spot and, with a win over Walker, could finally break the top ten.

Who do you see taking home the win at UFC Vegas 48, Jamahal Hill or Johnny Walker?

  • Johnny Walker Tests Positive For COVID-19 For The Second Time

UFC light heavyweight Johnny Walker has revealed he’s tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time since the pandemic caused havoc around the world.

Walker’s first bout of the rampant virus came near its peak in 2020. The Brazilian faced and defeated Ryan Spain at UFC Vegas 11 in September. The knockout finish, his 15th in MMA, came less than three minutes into the opening frame.

But days prior to the clash, Walker revealed the fight, which took place on the 19th, had initially been scheduled for the 5th. The bout was pushed back owing to a positive Covid test for Walker while he was in Ireland. The 29-year-old believes he likely caught it while traveling to Dublin to train at John Kavanagh’s SBG Ireland gym.

Fast forward nearly a year-and-a-half, to a time when the new Omicron variant is threatening to cause further havoc, and Walker has found himself back in isolation following a positive result.

Taking to his Instagram on Sunday, the #10-ranked light heavyweight contender revealed the news and described his current case as similar to his first in terms of symptoms. He also confirmed he’d been vaccinated in late 2021.

“COVID 2, Johnny 0. Second time testing positive, I took the Johnson vaccine two months ago and was still infected. I felt the same symptoms last time, which are just that of a flu.

“Well, I’m at rest and taking advantage of the opportunity I’m recording everything to post on my YouTube channel, supplements, diet, symptoms. If you want to stay on top of everything I’ll post it weekly, the link is in my bio, subscribe there, it’s free. Don’t forget your mask. My new year was quarantined.”

    What’s Next For Johnny Walker?

In March 2019, Walker was arguably one of the hottest rising prospects in the UFC. After earning a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series, the Brazilian entered the promotion with consecutive first-round knockouts. He made that three when he finished Misha Cirkunov with a brutal flying knee at UFC 235.

But Walker’s fortunes changed pretty quick. In fact, they did so about 10 seconds after his fight with Cirkunov ended when a worm celebration left him sidelined with a dislocated shoulder. Upon his return, the Rio de Janeiro native fell to back-to-back losses for the first time in his career. Those defeats came against Corey Anderson and Nikita Krylov.

Despite rebounding against Spann, Walker failed to carry that momentum into his main event debut. In a lackluster clash with former title challenger Thiago Santos in October 2021, the 29-year-old was outpointed across five frames.

With three losses in his last four Octagon outings, Walker’s next appearance is crucial in keeping his place inside the 205-pound top 10. But the tough tests look set to continue for the SBG Ireland product. Recent reports suggest the UFC is targeting a matchup between Walker and Jamahal Hill.

While Walker will be looking to return the win column this year, Hill will be hoping to continue his form, which saw him finish Jimmy Crute in the opening round last month. The #12-ranked contender’s victory over the Australian marked an impressive rebound from his sole MMA loss against Paul Craig last year, which saw him suffer a gruesome dislocated elbow.

  • Johnny Walker vs. Jamahal Hill Set To Fight Feb. 19

Light heavyweights Johnny Walker and Jamahal Hill are set to clash on Feb. 19 at UFC Fight Night 202 in Las Vegas.

MMAFighting.com broke the news today that the two would be added to the February fight night, which will be the fifth event of the 2022 year.

Walker, the 10th ranked light heavyweight, only fought once last year in a bout where he lost to former title challenger Thiago Santos via unanimous decision. Walker will be looking to get in the victory column for the first time in over a year. His last victory came on September 19, 2020, against Ryan Spann by KO.

It was also reported that Walker has signed a new six-fight contract with the UFC.

As for Hill, the #12-ranked light heavyweight, he will be looking to pick up his second win in a three-month span as he was victorious in his last fight against Jimmy Crute, who he knocked out in less than a minute at UFC on ESPN: Font vs. Aldo. Prior to his last victory, Hill tasted defeat for the first time in his career as he was submitted by Paul Craig.

A victory for either fighter should put them a step closer to a title shot, and this fight has the potential to be a fight of the night candidate.
