  • UFC Commentator Backs ‘More Versatile Striker’ Amanda Ribas To Beat Mackenzie Dern Again

UFC Commentator Backs ‘More Versatile Striker’ Amanda Ribas To Beat Mackenzie Dern Again

The UFC kicks off its schedule for 2025 Saturday night at the Apex, where strawweight contenders Mackenzie Dern and Amanda Ribas will run it back.

After a break from staging events over the festive period and first week of the new year, the mixed martial arts leader is back in action this weekend, with a host of prospects, veterans, and contenders looking to begin their campaigns in 2025 on the right foot.

And the main event presents an opportunity for Dern to avenge the first defeat of her professional career from back in 2019, when the decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist was comfortably outpointed by Ribas in Tampa, Florida.

Off the back of a victory over Loopy Godinez in Abu Dhabi that snapped her first losing skid last August, the #6-ranked Dern will look to keep her ball rolling on Jan. 11. But one former fighter-turned-UFC color commentator is favoring her opponent to spoil those plans.

During a recent episode of Michael Bisping’s Believe You Me podcast, Paul Felder broke down why he gives the edge to the lower-ranked Ribas in Saturday’s headliner.

“At this moment, I’m leaning towards Amanda Ribas. I just think she’s a bit more of a versatile striker on the feet, uses more weapons,” Felder said. “Coming off that five-round fight with Rose (Namajunas), she’s got a lot of experience with other good strikers and people that are well-rounded.

“I think if it gets to the ground, she’s good enough with her defense to avoid any kind of crazy submission (from Dern),” Felder continued. “So I’m going for Ribas, probably by decision.”

Ribas, who has a number next to her name at both 115 and 125 pounds, was most recently in action last March when she battled former two-time strawweight queen Rose Namajunas in a flyweight main event.

A few months on from a memorable knockout win over Luana Pinheiro, the Brazilian’s habit of exchanging wins and losses continued, with “Thug Rose” securing the nod on all three scorecards.

Report: Mackenzie Dern To Headline First UFC Event Of 2025

UFC strawweight contender Mackenzie Dern’s next fight will no longer be a year-ending clash in Tampa — it’ll be a year-opening assignment in Las Vegas.

Dern (14-5) has had an inconsistent run in recent years and entered her most recent outing in Abu Dhabi this past August off the back of consecutive losses at the hands of Jéssica Andrade and Amanda Lemos.

But the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist successfully avoided the first three-fight losing skid of her career, outpointing Loopy Godinez to return to winning ways. And Dern initially looked set for the chance to end the year on a streak.

She was booked for the opportunity to avenge her first professional defeat in a rematch with Amanda Ribas (13-5) at the UFC Fight Night in Tampa next weekend. The Brazilian is currently ranked two places below Dern at #8.

Per MMA Mania’s Alex Behunin, however, that second dance has been pushed back and will instead now top the lineup for UFC Vegas 101 at the Apex on Jan. 11.

For Ribas, the rematch will mark her return to 115 pounds after suffering defeat to Rose Namajunas last time out at flyweight, another division in which she occupies a spot inside the top 10.

In her last appearance as a strawweight, the 31-year-old stopped Luana Pinheiro in highlight reel fashion with a late spinning wheel kick. She’s riding back-to-back wins in the weight class, having previously got the better of a top-five contender in Virna Jandiroba.

With this addition, the current fights expected to take place at UFC Vegas 101 on Jan. 11 are as follows:

    • Mackenzie Dern vs. Amanda Ribas (women’s strawweight main event)
    • Chris Curtis vs. Roman Kopylov (middleweight)
    • Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Carlston Harris (welterweight)
    • Thiago Moisés vs. Trey Ogden (lightweight)
    • Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. César Almeida (middleweight)
    • Austin Bashi vs. Christian Rodriguez (featherweight)
    • Nurullo Aliev vs. Yanal Ashmouz (lightweight)
    • Ernesta Kareckaite vs. Nicolle Caliari (women’s flyweight)
    • Punahele Soriano vs. Uroš Medić (welterweight)
    • Jose Johnson vs. Felipe Bunes (flyweight)
    • Magomed Gadzhiyasulov vs. Bruno Lopes (light heavyweight)
    • Andreas Gustafsson vs. Preston Parsons (welterweight)
    • Victoria Dudakova vs. Fatima Kline (women’s strawweight)
  • UFC Fighter Antonio Trócoli Arrested, Accused Of Assaulting Mackenzie Dern’s Ex-Husband

UFC Fighter Antonio Trócoli Arrested, Accused Of Assaulting Mackenzie Dern’s Ex-Husband

UFC middleweight Antonio Trócoli was arrested in California last Friday on misdemeanor battery charges.

The Brazilian was apprehended following an incident in Huntington Beach, which allegedly involved the ex-husband of UFC strawweight contender Mackenzie Dern, to whom Trócoli is now married.

The arrest was confirmed by police in an email to MMA Fighting this week.

“A subject by the name of Antonio Trocoli da Silveira Filho was arrested by the Huntington Beach Police Department on Oct. 4, 2024, at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the 8700 block of Dolphin Street, Huntington Beach,” Huntington Beach police said in a statement. “He was arrested for misdemeanor battery, and the case has been sent to the Orange County District Attorney’s Officer for review.”

The Orange County district attorney’s office has not officially brought a case against Trócoli, 33, who lost his short-notice UFC debut to Sharabutdin Magomedov in Saudi Arabia this past June.

Dern’s Ex-Husband Claims Video Shows Trócoli Punching Him

Although official details provided by police are scarce, Dern’s ex-husband sent a statement to MMA Fighting in which he claims to have been the victim of Trócoli’s alleged assault.

Wesley Santos — a professional surfer who was formerly married to Dern and has a daughter, Moa, with the strawweight fighter — accused Trócoli of ongoing harassment, including sending abusive messages by way of his child.

He claims things came to a head last Friday after he dropped his daughter off at school, following which he says Trócoli pulled up in a car and proceeded to strike him before fleeing.

“Mackenzie Dern is my ex-wife and after our divorce she married Antonio ‘Malvado’ Jose Trocoli da Silveira Filho,” Santos said. “We divorced and have shared custody of our daughter Moa, but Antonio never stopped following me. We had a deal that he would not be part of the custody but he was always nearby, threatening and disturbing in every custody change. He sent messages through Moa, saying he would beat me up, and Moa told me clearly.

“I dropped my daughter at school this past Friday and was going back home on a skateboard when I saw a white car stop, and I started recording. It was Antonio. He got out of the car and punched me, and the car kept moving [along], and he ran back inside the car. Cops were called, there were several witnesses, and Antonio was arrested for battery.”

Dern and Santos’ divorce played out publicly in 2023, with the pair exchanging accusations of domestic abuse.

In court, the UFC fighter claimed to have been the victim of repeated physical and emotional abuse throughout her marriage with Santos, alleging to have once had a door slammed on her leg while being dragged out of their house during a fight.

The pro surfer responded by accusing Dern of similar abuse, providing evidence of a bloody nose that he claimed was caused by a punch from his then-wife.

Trócoli is yet to comment on his arrest and the charges against him. He’s currently scheduled to return for his second UFC outing against Tresean Gore at the Apex on Nov. 9.

  • Report: Mackenzie Dern’s Return Targeted For UFC Fight Night Tampa On December 14

Report: Mackenzie Dern’s Return Targeted For UFC Fight Night Tampa On December 14

UFC strawweight contender Mackenzie Dern will seemingly have the chance to end her 2024 on a win streak in “The Sunshine State.”

Mixed martial arts’ leading promotion recently confirmed its schedule for the remainder of 2024, with 15 events set across nine different cities. Tasked with closing out the year is Tampa, Florida, where a UFC Fight Night will take place on December 14.

While the card remains without a main event as it stands, one notable matchup has been reported. According to Brazilian outlet Ag. Fight, the #8-ranked Dern (14-5) is set to run it back with Amanda Ribas over five years on from their first meeting.

Dern Set For Chance To Avenge First MMA Loss At UFC Fight Night Tampa

When they share the Octagon for a second time on Dec. 14, Dern will be looking to avenge her loss to Ribas and finish the year with consecutive triumphs.

Dern, an ADCC and no gi BJJ (black belt) world champion, enjoyed an unbeaten start to MMA life. But she had her record blemished following seven straight wins when she ran into Ribas in 2019, losing by way of unanimous decision.

While a four-fight win streak brought Dern back into contention, the grappling specialist has been inconsistent ever since and recently tasted her first losing skid after defeats to Jéssica Andrade and Amanda Lemos.

Having bounced back by outpointing Loopy Godinez in Abu Dhabi this month, Dern will look to enjoy a run of victories to reignite her title ambitions.

Lemos will hope to put a stop to those plans by repeating her feat from five years ago. The Brazilian currently finds herself ranked at both strawweight and flyweight, with her most recent outing coming in defeat opposite Rose Namajunas at 125 pounds.

She’ll now return to the weight at which she earned a bonus with a TKO of Luana Pinheiro last November, looking to defend her #5 spot against her fellow Countrywoman Dern.

UFC Rankings Report: Belal Muhammad Jumps Sean O’Malley On Pound-For-Pound List

As always, the latest action on offer inside the Octagon has seen some climb the ladder toward contention and others fall away.

And in the aftermath of UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov, MMA News has you covered with this week’s updates to the official UFC rankings.

Men’s Pound-For-Pound: A week after entering the P4P rankings at #6, Belal Muhammad has had another boost. The welterweight champion has now moved above his bantamweight counterpart, Sean O’Malley (#6), to occupy the #5 position.

Women’s Pound-for-Pound: Bantamweight queen Raquel Pennington is expected to defend her title for the first time opposite ex-champ Julianna Peña this fall. And the pair now sit on the same step of the pound-for-pound rankings, with “Rocky” joining “The Venezuelan Vixen” to share #5.

Women’s Strawweight: Mackenzie Dern bounced back from a two-fight skid on Saturday, but she’s still fallen further at 115 pounds. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace has dropped one place to #8, with her compatriot Amanda Ribas moving up to #7.

Women’s Flyweight: While on the rise at strawweight, Ribas has taken a hit at 125 pounds, slipping one spot to #10 below Viviane Araújo (#9).

Women’s Bantamweight: At 135 pounds, Miesha Tate and Norma Dumont have both been boosted to #8, leaving a three-way tie for the position with Karol Rosa.

    Flyweight: No changes.

Bantamweight: Umar Nurmagomedov secured the biggest win of his young career to date in Abu Dhabi, outpointing the highly ranked Cory Sandhagen across five rounds. As a result, the Dagestani has climbed a mammoth eight places to #2. “The Sandman,” meanwhile has remained in the top five after a one-spot drop to #4.

Also on the rise at 135 pounds is Deiveson Figueiredo (#5), who secured a top-five position with his comfortable victory over former title challenger Marlon Vera this past weekend.

Featherweight: At 145 pounds, Movsar Evloev is down one step to #6, no longer sharing the #5 place with Arnold Allen. Further down, Bryce Mitchell has moved up to share #12 with Diego Lopes.

Lightweight: Despite having his return announced for 170 pounds at UFC 308 later this year, former champ Rafael dos Anjos has received a boost at 155 pounds. He’s climbed to #13, swapping positions with Jalin Turner (#14).

    Welterweight: No changes.

    Middleweight: No changes.

Light Heavyweight: He’s had to wait a while but Roman Dolidze is finally ranked in two weight classes following his triumph over Anthony Smith at UFC 303. The Georgian has arrived at 205 pounds in the #15 position, three spots below “Lionheart.”

Elsewhere in the division, Azamat Murzakanov is knocking on the door of the top 10 after climbing three spots to #11 courtesy of his knockout win over Alonzo Menifield on August 3.

    Heavyweight: No changes.

  • Mackenzie Dern Hopes For Tatiana Suarez Matchup After UFC Fight Night Abi Dhabi Win

Mackenzie Dern Hopes For Tatiana Suarez Matchup After UFC Fight Night Abi Dhabi Win

Should one top contender not get their expected shot at Zhang Weili’s UFC strawweight gold, Mackenzie Dern is open to facing her in the meantime instead.

Dern was among the big victors to emerge from this past weekend’s UFC Fight Night event at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, where she got back in the winner’s circle at the expense of Loopy Godinez.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist entered the contest riding a two-fight losing skid, having been knocked out by former champion Jéssica Andrade last November and outpointed by Amanda Lemos this past February.

After falling out of contention at 115 pounds, a bounce-back result was crucial for the grappling ace on August 3, and she achieved that on the scorecards after going the distance in a close contest with Godinez.

Having defended her spot in the strawweight pecking order, Dern has her sights set back on those above her and, specifically, an undefeated name…

Dern Likes Matchup Against Wrestling-Heavy Suarez

During a backstage interview for ESPN MMA, Dern reflected on her successful performance in Abu Dhabi and assessed what could lie next for her inside the Octagon.

While she acknowledged that the #1-ranked Tatiana Suarez is likely next in line for a shot at the belt, Dern put her name in the hat to face the undefeated American if that’s not the case.

“I’d like to fight November, hopefully,” Dern said. “I don’t really know too many people that are open. I would like to fight Tatiana Suarez if she doesn’t go for the belt. I think that would be a great matchup, a wrestler. So, I would like that fight.”

Suarez has won both of her fights since returning from an injury layoff that spanned close to four years. After defeating Montana De La Rosa up at flyweight, the Californian re-entered title contention at 115 pounds by submitting Andrade last August in Nashville.

Dern, meanwhile, replaced Suarez on late notice to face Lemos earlier this year. While that decision wasn’t rewarded with a triumph, the BJJ specialist has now got back to winning form and has her eyes on the ultimate UFC prize once again.

  • 4 Positives & 3 Negatives From UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov

4 Positives & 3 Negatives From UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov

On Saturday, the mixed martial arts leader returned for its latest event, UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov.

After staging its return to Manchester, England, for the UFC 304 pay-per-view last weekend, MMA’s leading promotion remained on the road for a card inside the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Before returning to the venue for its annual numbered event this October (Topuria vs. Holloway! Topuria vs. Holloway! Topuria vs. Holloway!), the UFC put on a Fight Night event topped by elite bantamweight contenders Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov. The former interim title challenger and his undefeated Russian opponent were looking to stake their claims for a shot at the winner of Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili.

Saturday’s co-headliner, meanwhile, saw another fighter look to keep their 0 as Sharabutdin Magomedov attempted to make it three from three in the UFC at the expense of Michał Oleksiejczuk.

Before that, a second crucial contest at 135 pounds went down. Making the walk for the first time since his defeat to O’Malley in their UFC 299 title fight, Marlon Vera hoped to revive his championship ambitions by stalling the two-weight goals of ex-flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo.

Elsewhere on the lineup, the likes of former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and strawweight submission specialist Mackenzie Dern were among those in action. But did those names come together to put on an entertaining few hours of MMA action?

Let’s find out with all the positives and negatives from UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs. Nurmagomedov.

    Negative – Howard? Anybody Home?

UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi started out with zero finishes and a judging horror show. Not exactly ideal, is it?

In one of the many decisions that kicked off the preliminary card on Saturday, Sam Hughes handed Victoria Dudakova the first defeat of her career, outpointing the Russian on two of the three judges’ scorecards after three rounds.

But the win for “Sampage” (surely top three for the worst nicknames in MMA? Sorry, Sam) wasn’t a certainty as Bruce Buffer read out the scorecards. That was courtesy of Howard Hughes, who showed that he has no business sitting cageside by scoring all three rounds for Dudakova.

Two? Justifiable. But to give the second frame to the 25-year-old is utterly ludicrous.

I largely don’t buy into judging criticism when plenty of ‘robbery’ cries derive from lost bets and fan favorites not getting the nod. But put Howie’s Saturday scorecard in the group of genuinely terrible verdicts in 2024.

Negative – Well, Keith, That Was Nonsense?

At what point do we accept that the “No Nonsense” Keith Peterson does, indeed, allow nonsense?!

A week on from a UFC 304 event that saw fence grabs galore and the most egregious instance of cheating in recent memory from Muhammad Mokaev — none of which were actually punished with point deductions, by the way — referee incompetence also arrived in the Middle East.

In fairness to Peterson, he was tasked with watching the heavyweightest of heavyweight fights in Don’Tale Mayes vs. Shamil Gaziev. I’m not sure there’s a human in the world who could have watched that slop and stayed focused on their task.

During one exchange that saw the one-time UFC headliner (a travesty) initiate grappling and push Mayes up against the cage, the American had a handful of Gaziev’s shorts and kept ahold despite the ref’s firm warning.

Peterson broke things up and took a point, right? RIGHT?! Of course not, he simply said he would, and then didn’t. Rules do not exist in MMA, folks. The worst part about this is, if Peterson was going to take zero action, why pause the fight and hamper Gaziev’s momentum in that position?

I don’t often agree with Daniel Cormier’s commentary, but his take was so spot on that it’s only right to let him close out this negative…

    Positive – Murzakanov Atomics ‘Atomic’

Outside of a few names (Alex Pereira, Jiří Procházka, and co.), the light heavyweight division isn’t exactly the most enthralling. But one man who is quickly joining the top figures on Mt. Entertainment excelled again in Abu Dhabi.

That man is Azamat Murzakanov, a hard-fisted Russian who has remained unbeaten in his career through four appearances inside the Octagon thus far. That run has seen only one bout go the distance, and of his three knockouts, the most brutal came at the Etihad Arena on Saturday.

The victim of his charge was Alonzo Menifield, who returned less than three months on from a 12-second KO at the hands of Carlos Ulberg. While not quite as quick, Murzakanov sent “Atomic” to a similar fate, putting him on wobbly legs with some hard punches before utterly flattening him with ground-and-pound for the stoppage.

While wins over the likes of Dustin Jacoby and Menifield make it hard to tout “The Professional” for title contention at 205 pounds at this point, he’s certainly a major threat to those above him in the ladder. And if he keeps delivering finishes like the kind he did on Saturday, we’re in for some fun.

    Positive – ‘El Fenómeno’ Strikes

I assume many may have been in the same boat when I say that Joel Álvarez is a name I’d largely forgotten about leading in to the latest UFC Fight Night event.

In all fairness, the Spaniard hadn’t competed in over a year since his submission of Marc Diakiese in London. “El Fenómeno” had previously had his undefeated UFC record blemished in vicious and bloody fashion by some Arman Tsarukyan elbows.

With one fight in three straight calendar years, Álvarez was in need of some momentum after having two canceled fights already in 2024. Well, consider momentum acquired, and consider his name firmly back in our minds.

For his comeback fight, the Spanish standout was tasked with adding to the woes of the highly regarded Elves Brener. The Brazilian broke through in 2023 with a 3-0 year that saw him finish seventh for MMA News’ Newcomer of the Year award, but his first outing of 2024 concluded with him falling to the fast-charging Myktybek Orolbai.

And Brener was unable to bounce back in Abu Dhabi, as Alvarez put on a mightily fine performance en route to a TKO in the third and final round. The finish was set up by some brutal knees, before ground-and-pound got the job done.

Back in the Octagon, back on a win streak, and back on the radar at 155 pounds.

    Negative – How Many More?

Tony. Tony, Tony, Tony (to be said in a slow and worried tone, not some sort of English football chant).

Tony Ferguson’s latest outing inside the Octagon was close to worst-case scenario, as he fell to yet another defeat in just minutes — although, in all honesty, it’s a relief at this point to see him exit a fight without major damage.

Like most, a loss is always the expected outcome when I see “El Cucuy” enter the cage these days. But even with that outlook on his floundering career, the rapid nature of his submission loss to Michael Chiesa was a surprise.

A retirement has been overdue for a while now, but after losses to Pimblett and “Maverick” to leave him with the unwanted record of suffering the most straight defeats in UFC history, there can be zero doubt about what the future should hold for Ferguson.

Unfortunately, while the gloves came off and it appeared as though Chiesa had passed over his microphone time for the end, Ferguson only half-retired. And in all honesty, with his frequent remarks about making another run as recently as last year, that’s as good as calling for another five-fight contract in the case of “El Cucuy.”

Given how long this term has been appropriate, it’s no longer right to say ‘it’s time’ for him to call it quits. It’s time for the UFC to do so for him.

    Positive – Figgy

Deiveson Figueiredo is absolutely a problem in the bantamweight division.

Although a move up appeared clearly due following the end of his second stint on the flyweight throne, I’m not sure many predicted this kind of start to life at 135 pounds for “Deus Da Guerra.”

His debut against Rob Font was slick and impressive. His finish of Cody Garbrandt at UFC 300 added a former champion to his record in the division. His domination of Marlon Vera has no doubt earned him a top-five ranking.

More than just outpointing “Chito” in Abu Dhabi, Figueiredo became the first to knock the Ecuadorian down — a feat that even Sean O’Malley and his knee failed to achieve at UFC 299 this past March.

In terms of pure skill and fighting ability, I’m not sure the Brazilian’s superiority over Vera was ever in doubt. But to see him handle a tricky customer like “Chito” in that fashion was eyebrow-raising, and it also sees another big name added to the title equation at 135 pounds.

    What. A. Division.

    Positive – Bantamweight Main Events

We’ve had more heavyweight UFC main events in 2024 than bantamweight. Has there ever been a bigger farce in mixed martial arts?

For all the Shamil Gaziev vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruiks we have to sit through, there’s one reason we keep watching. Because a Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov could come along eventually.

Talent! Actual fighting talent, with technique, and strategy, and tactics. As expected, “The Sandman” and his undefeated Russian opponent battled in a highly entertaining chess match to close out Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi.

The man having his hand raised at the end of it was Nurmagomedov, who rose to the occasion in what marked by far the toughest test of his blossoming career to date. And while his title ambitions have taken a slight hit, it’s hard to say Sandhagen’s stock dipped.

A round of applause for a bantamweight main event, folks — only the second of the year and the first not to include the title. Would it take a rocket scientist to explain that there are 50 different 135-pound matchups that would be better headliners than the Marcin Tybura vs. Serghei Spivac atrocity we’re in for next weekend?

UFC Fight Night Results & Highlights: Umar Nurmagomedov Outlasts Cory Sandhagen

The MMA leader staged its latest UFC Fight Night event on Saturday, and MMA News has you covered with all the action.

After taking the Octagon back to Manchester in England for a pay-per-view card last weekend, the promotion’s return to the United Arab Emirates saw the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi play host to a 13-fight lineup.

In the main attraction, undefeated bantamweight up-and-comer Umar Nurmagomedov extended his perfect record en route to a potential first shot at UFC gold. Unsuccessful in his attempt to stall the Russian’s rise was Cory Sandhagen, who fell on the wrong side of three lopsided scorecards.

All eyes were also on the co-headliner, which saw another unbeaten Russian in Sharabutdin Magomedov in action as he faced Michał Oleksiejczuk on short notice, as well as a second crucial contest at 135 pounds between recent title challenger Marlon Vera and former flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo.

Before those matchups, the likes of ex-lightweight interim title contender Tony Ferguson, strawweight submission specialist Mackenzie Dern, and light heavyweight powerhouse Alonzo Menifield all had their next assignments inside the Octagon.

With the event concluded, see below for the full results, followed by all the highlights!

‘Dern Is All Gas, No Breaks’ – Fans React After Mackenzie Dern Bounces Back Against Loopy Godinez At UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi

After a couple of fights down that earned her pretty heavy criticism, Mackenzie Dern appeared to bounce back at UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi, earning a unanimous decision win over Loopy Godinez.

The grappling prowess of Dern was on full display in the first round, nearly locking in an armbar attempt that appeared it’d be tight and could have snapped Godinez’s arm. The Mexican, however, battled back in the second round, with the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist’s lack of striking defense, which has earned her the previously mentioned criticism, rearing its head again.

The third round was closely contested, with Dern landing stronger strikes — though some may feel Godinez landed cleaner ones — and landing another takedown.

Ultimately, Dern took the decision with 29-28 scores on all three judges’ scorecards.

The result marks Dern’s first win in just over a year after back-to-back troubling performances against Jéssica Andrade and Amanda Lemos.

Godinez, meanwhile, has now lost back-to-back fights herself after a four-fight win streak.

After staging its return to Manchester, England, for the UFC 304 pay-per-view last weekend, MMA’s leading promotion has remained on the road for a card inside the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Before returning to the venue for its annual numbered event this October, the UFC will put on a Fight Night event topped by elite bantamweight contenders Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov. Before that, a second crucial contest at 135 pounds will go down. Making the walk for the first time since his defeat to O’Malley in their UFC 299 title fight, Marlon Vera will look to revive his championship ambitions before stalling the two-weight goals of ex-flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo.

  • Mackenzie Dern Promises To ‘Clean’ Up Fight Style In Pursuit Of Becoming Two-Division UFC Champion

Mackenzie Dern Promises To ‘Clean’ Up Fight Style In Pursuit Of Becoming Two-Division UFC Champion

Ahead of her return, UFC strawweight contender Mackenzie Dern knows a more controlled approach is needed if she’s to reach her goals in MMA.

She is among the prominent names set to be in action at this weekend’s UFC Fight Night event in Abu Dhabi. A number of key matchups will play out before the bantamweight headliner between Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov, including Dern’s 115-pound scrap with Loopy Godinez.

For the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist, the contest marks her first since a decision defeat to former title challenger Amanda Lemos at UFC 298 this past February. That short-notice assignment saw her fall to a second straight setback, having previously been stopped for the first time by Jéssica Andrade.

As for much of her career, the current winless run has left Dern as the subject of criticism for her lack of striking development and habit of ill-advised brawling.

While that’s left many dismissing her title ambitions on MMA’s biggest stage, Dern is confident that championship glory in multiple weight classes still lies in her future, providing she can rein in emotion inside the Octagon…

Dern On UFC Title Chances: ‘If I’m More Rational…’

During a recent fight week interview with MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn, Dern reflected on the two defeats she’s suffered to fellow Brazilians since a career-best display opposite Angela Hill in an Apex main event last year.

The #7-ranked contender acknowledged the areas she must improve in starting this weekend, and she believes that success in that field could pave the way for glory in more than just the strawweight division.

“From my last fight, the biggest thing I’ve been trying to work on is just like, control the emotions. We kind of feel like that’s the biggest detail, what my losses are coming from,” Dern said. “Not necessarily, ‘Oh, the technique isn’t there, missing the wrestling, missing the striking.’ Just that fact like, when you take a punch or something, sometimes I stay in a brawl and make the fight harder than what it needs to be.

“I want to have a long career. I want to be a champion. I would like to be like, a two-weight class champion,” Dern continued. “Brawlers don’t really have that. They take the damage. … It’s just unnecessary. I always have that card in my back pocket if I need to brawl. I can go out there and brawl. We all know I have that heart in there. I want to have a long career and try to see everything. And I think if I’m more rational and reasonable, I can have everything it takes to be a champion.”

First things first, Dern must show development and defend her spot on the ladder against Godinez in the Middle East on Saturday.

Mackenzie Dern vs. Loopy Godinez – UFC Abu Dhabi (August 3)

Mackenzie Dern will look to bounce back from the first losing skid of her professional MMA career when she heads to Abu Dhabi to appear on the UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs.  Nurmagomedov undercard.

Dern (13-5) has struggled with consistency since winning four straight upon her return post-pregnancy. After losing her opening two main events to Marina Rodriguez and Yan Xiaonan, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist appeared to level up in an Apex headliner last May, with Dern putting in her strongest display to date against Angela Hill. But the 31-year-old has been unable to build on that, falling to a crushing TKO loss at the hands of Jéssica Andrade last November and a narrow decision opposite Amanda Lemos at UFC 298 this past February.

If Dern is to rebound in the Middle East on August 3, she’ll have to send Loopy Godinez (12-4) onto a losing skid of her own. The Mexican climbed into the top 10 at 115 pounds on the back of a four-fight win streak that included a decision victory over Tabatha Ricci at UFC 295 last November. But in her bid to further climb the ranks in Atlantic City this past March, Godinez was outpointed by Virna Jandiroba.

This strawweight matchup was announced by the promotion.

  • Mackenzie Dern Reveals Pre-Fight Injury Before Rodriguez Loss

Mackenzie Dern revealed in an exclusive interview with MMA News that she suffered a knee injury before her main event loss to Marina Rodriguez.

Dern went on to lose to Rodriguez in her first career UFC main event at UFC Vegas 39 last October via a unanimous decision. She was unable to deal with Rodriguez’s boxing or get the fight to the ground by using her signature Jiu-Jitsu.

Dern remains one of the top UFC strawweight prospects heading into her 2022 debut against Tecia Torres at UFC 273. However, it was a hard road back to full health following the knee injury before her fight with Rodriguez.

Dern explained what led to her knee injury in a recent sitdown with MMA News’ James Lynch.

“Yeah, I hurt it on the last sparring before my fight with Marina on Friday [of fight week],” Dern said. “It was more during the fight week, so during fight week it just blew up and it was huge. I couldn’t really do anything, I couldn’t train during fight week, I couldn’t move around too much, I couldn’t put pressure on my knee or anything like that. In the fight, I didn’t feel it or anything like that. Marina did a couple of kicks and it was in the back of my head. She didn’t know about it or anything like that.

“I felt good, I had trained hard and everything like that. But it was a little distraction. All of these things are little distractions and you just gotta learn to block it all out.”

Dern went on to reveal that she underwent knee surgery following the fight with Rodriguez and made a full recovery ahead of this fight camp.

Before the loss to Rodriguez, Dern had won four straight over the likes of Nina Nunes and Virna Jandiroba. She debuted in the UFC back at UFC 222 following successful stints in LFA and Invicta FC.

Dern will look to get back into the strawweight title picture with a win over Torres at UFC 273. Her grappling is arguably the best in the strawweight division and she’s proven to be a matchup nightmare for most contenders.

What is your prediction for Mackenzie Dern vs. Tecia Torres?

  • Mackenzie Dern: You Don’t Have To Give Birth To Be A Mom Champ

UFC women’s strawweight contender Mackenzie Dern has given her take on bantamweight champion Julianna Peña’s past comments on motherhood.

At UFC 269, Amanda Nunes put her 135-pound gold on the line against “The Venezuelan Vixen.” In and around fight week was the presence of two little ones. While the Brazilian became a mom after her wife Nina Nunes gave birth to daughter Raegan in 2020, Peña brought her daughter into the world two years prior in 2018.

After shocking the world with her performance at the final pay-per-view of 2021, the newly-crowned bantamweight queen shocked a few more with some of her post-fight remarks. She claimed that, owing to the fact she gave birth to her child, she deserves the title of “first mom champ,” rather than the defeated Nunes.

In a recent exclusive interview with MMA News, Dern, who became a mother herself in 2019, provided her thoughts on her UFC peer’s controversial comments.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CanHbtspFnB/

Dern: I Disagree With Peña, But Understand Her Take

After making the statement, Peña drew widespread criticism, with Nunes even suggesting her rival has to be more aware when addressing the sensitive topic of motherhood and the alternate methods to pregnancy.

Like many, Dern, the current #5-ranked 115-pound contender, disagrees with the idea a fighter can only become a ‘mom champ’ if she’s given birth.

Nevertheless, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist told MMA News she understands where Peña is coming from, and identified some of the benefits that could come for those who didn’t go through pregnancy and delivery.

“I think each family is different,” said Dern. “I don’t think that actually giving birth is what makes the mom champ, you know what I mean? Because, I mean, the guys, they have tons of guys, men, that dedicate a lot of time with their kids and all things like that. But also, too, they have the guys that have the moms, the wives, that’s been kinda help(ing) with their career, their training, and the guys can just focus on training, and they have the wife that helps them out and can just take care of the kids for them, and be that support team for them.

“I don’t know. I don’t really agree with the whole, ‘Oh, because they’re giving birth, they’re the mom champ.’ But, I mean, I understand what she’s trying to say,” concluded Dern.

It is worth noting that Peña later clarified her remarks and has since stated that Amanda Nunes is indeed a true mom champ.

As well as discussing Peña’s comments on motherhood, Dern also touched on topics like her recent knee injury, her upcoming return to action at UFC 273 against Tecia Torres, and the impending return of former champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk during her interview with MMA News.

Since returning from her maternity break, Dern has shot back into contention. After suffering her first setback in professional MMA at the hands of Amanda Ribas, the 28-year-old won four straight bouts, three of which ended via first-round submission.

Having dropped her last contest to Marina Rodriguez, Dern will be hoping to return to the win column and the title conversation when she enters the Octagon for the first time in 2022. In her way of doing so will be Tecia Torres, who has had an impressive resurgence in recent times.

Given that she’s on the right side of 30, Dern will be hoping to join the club of mom champs in the coming years, a pursuit that will first have to get through a certain “Tiny Tornado.”

Do you agree with Mackenzie Dern?

  • Marina Rodriguez Was In Disbelief When ‘Nearly Submitting’ Dern

UFC women’s strawweight Marina Rodriguez has looked back on her main event victory over Mackenzie Dern last year and described her disbelief when she almost submitted the Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert.

Top-five contenders Dern and Rodriguez collided in the UFC Vegas 39 headliner last October at Las Vegas’ Apex facility.

Heading into the contest, the Arizona-born grappling specialist was riding a four-fight win streak after submission victories over Hannah Cifers, Randa Markos, and Nina Nunes, and a decision triumph over Virna Jandiroba. A 2019 defeat to Amanda Ribas represented Dern’s only setback in 12 professional MMA fights.

Rodriguez, meanwhile, had won back-to-back contests since falling to her first loss in the sport, a split decision disappointment at the hands of current #1 contender Carla Esparza.

After five rounds of action, it was Dern who had a second defeat added to her record. Having survived some early exchanges and submission attempts on the ground, Rodriguez took control of the fight on the feet and recorded a comfortable unanimous decision.

Heading into the contest, many had expected Dern to impose her will on the mat and add an eighth submission win to her résumé. The BJJ black belt boasts incredible grappling credentials, having previously been the #1-ranked IBJJF competitor.

Despite that, Rodriguez held her own on the ground and managed to survive a heavy submission attack in the second round of their clash. Describing her game plan and ability to deal with her opponent’s offense, the 34-year-old told Drake Riggs she was “ready for everything.”

“For that fight, we were perfectly ready. We knew what we were going against. We knew her ground game was really really good, but MMA isn’t just ground game, right? So I was calm I knew what was going to come up and when the fight happened I was ready for everything that came.”

With Dern’s jiu-jitsu pedigree well known, and regarded as arguably the best in the promotion, Rodriguez understandably increased the amount of training she did for the discipline. The Brazilian acknowledged that identifying her opponent’s strong point and preparing for it was her best path to victory.

“In all my fights, I train a little bit of jiu-jitsu and grappling. For this fight specifically, we already knew that Mackenzie Dern’s jiu-jitsu is really, really strong, so we prepared especially for this. I added a little bit more of grappling and jiu-jitsu to my training and that’s it. When I train, I think of my opponent, what are their strong points, and I get ready for that.”

More than just surviving on the ground in the second round, Rodriguez actually got off some offense of her own in the form of a D’Arce choke attempt. While Dern managed to slip out of the hold, Rodriguez admitted she felt like she had a chance of submitting the grappling ace, a prospect that left her in disbelief.

“I thought exactly, ‘I’m going to finish Mackenzie during—is this real? She’s so good on the ground she was able to get out of the position. And I thought afterwards, ‘Okay, I won’t be able to get the finish in this fight, but next fight I’ll get it.”

Rodriguez Will Look To Secure A Title Shot With Win Over Xiaonan

Rodriguez will now ride the momentum of her big win over Dern into her first outing of 2022. The #3-ranked contender is set to face Chinese star Yan Xiaonan at UFC 272 on March 5.

Before coming up against the division’s inaugural champion Esparza last May, Xiaonan boasted a perfect 6-0 UFC record, which included wins against Angela Hill, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Cláudia Gadelha.

With Esparza set to challenge for Rose Namajunas’ gold next, both Rodriguez and Xiaonan will be looking to stake their claim for a title shot on the pay-per-view stage.

  • Mackenzie Dern vs. Tecia Torres Set For UFC 273 On April 9

Mackenzie Dern will have the chance to rebound on April 9 when she takes on the in-form Tecia Torres at UFC 273.

The bout, which has been rumoured for a number of days, was confirmed by Torres today in a post on Twitter. The #7-ranked strawweight contender is clearly excited to have the opportunity to break into the 115-pound top five when she enters the Octagon with Dern.

“I got my Top 5 fight. Cracking into that Top 5 April 9th at #UFC273

Torres will be riding a three-fight win streak into the contest. Since defeats to Jéssica Andrade, Joanna Jędrzejczyk, Zhang Weili, and Marina Rodriguez between 2018 and 2019 left her on a four-fight losing skid, “The Tiny Tornado” has returned to form.

Along with a TKO (doctor’s stoppage) against Sam Hughes, Torres has recorded two unanimous decision triumphs, most recently against Angela Hill at UFC 265 last August. She’ll hope to break back into title contention at UFC 273.

Dern, meanwhile, will be hoping to rebound on April 9 by stalling the charge of her strawweight peer. Like Torres, the Brazilian also has a loss to Rodriguez on her record. But while her upcoming opponent’s loss extended her woes at the time, Dern’s main event defeat to her compatriot last October halted her surge towards the gold and ended her win streak.

Nevertheless, Dern’s form beforehand can’t be forgotten. After returning from pregnancy in mid-2020, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt put her talents on the ground on full display, submitting Hannah Cifers and Randa Markos with brutal armbars. She extended her win streak to three by outpointing Virna Jandiroba on the feet at UFC 256. At the age of 28, Dern’s potential remains high, and she’ll look to show her improvements and re-rail her train to the top at the April pay-per-view.

The event currently looks set to play host to two blockbuster title fights. After Max Holloway’s withdrawal, “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung is seemingly in line to challenge Alexander Volkanovski in the UFC 273 headliner. Also moving over from the UFC 272 event is the unification fight between bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling and interim titleholder Petr Yan.

Listed below are the fights expected to take place at UFC 273:

Alexander Volkanovski (C) vs. The Korean Zombie (featherweight title fight)

Aljamain Sterling (C) vs. Petr Yan (IC) (bantamweight unification title fight)

Lauren Murphy vs. Miesha Tate (women’s flyweight)

Mackenzie Dern vs. Tecia Torres (women’s strawweight)

Mickey Gall vs. Mike Malott (welterweight)

Irene Aldana vs. Aspen Ladd (women’s bantamweight)

Pat Sabatini vs. Gavin Tucker (featherweight)

Who do you think will have their hand raised at UFC 273, Mackenzie Dern or Tecia Torres?
