Winning Announcement for Tybura vs. Fortune Botched

The post-fight events following Marcin Tybura vs. Tyrell Fortune ended up being more relevant and noteworthy than the fight itself at UFC Seattle.

The two ended up having a mostly uneventful bout, with the biggest moment coming when Fortune scored a pair of takedowns on Tybura in the first — nearly finishing the fight in that round. It was overall a fairly dominant performance for the Bellator veteran.

But when the fight’s result was announced, the cards were said to be in the favor of Tybura, prompting mass confusion around the cage and a litany of boos raining down from the Seattle crowd.

Bruce Buffer, Octagon announcer, however, had the fighters return to the cage, as the announcement was corrected, to everyone’s relief — especially Fortune’s.

Screwed Up Winning Announcement Overshadows Tyrell Fortune Earning Victory In UFC Debut

It’s unclear if Buffer read the wrong fighter when reading the scorecards or if the judges marked the wrong winner on the cards.

Fortune has now won four straight since his brief stint with the PFL in 2024 following their acquisition of Bellator. This marked Fortune’s UFC debut.

Tybura has now lost back-to-back fights and is 2-3 in his last five.

“The Heavyweight Division Needs A Destroyer Like Ante Delija” – Fans & Fighters React To Delija’s UFC Debut, Avenging Previous Loss To Marcin Tybura At UFC Paris

Ten years ago, Ante Delija looked to win the M-1 Global heavyweight title in a battle with Marcin Tybura, but a leg injury in the first round of that fight prevented that from happening. Now, the two squared off again in Delija’s UFC debut at UFC Paris, and Delija is the one who came out with his hand raised this time around.

Delija looked to bring pressure right away, landing on Tybura, but he’d get caught in Tybura’s grasp and placed on the fence. Tybura would look for the takedown, but Delija managed to escape. Tybura started to connect with the right hand, and the fight’s momentum would not change from there.

A short series of right hands from Delija would rock Tybura and send him to the mat, finishing the fight in an emotional UFC debut performance for the former PFL champion.

Delija is a veteran of the PFL, having been a finalist in the 2021 PFL heavyweight season and winning the 2022 PFL heavyweight title. After parting ways with the PFL, with his last fight with the promotion coming in 2024, Delija last fought in April, finishing Yorgan De Castro this past April at FNC 22.

Tybura is 3-2 in his last five.

Tom Aspinall’s Teammate No Longer Undefeated After Losing To Top 10 Heavyweight At UFC London

Mick Parkin has suffered his first defeat, but it did not come without debate, as he dropped a decision to Marcin Tybura during the UFC London preliminary card.

The first round proved to be quiet and even. Parkin took the lead in terms of strikes landed, though Tybura used his grappling to give some trouble, including a late takedown. The Englishman had complete control of the second round, however, scoring his own takedown and maintaining several minutes of top control. The previously unbeaten heavyweight, in fact, landed a series of ground-and-pound shots, nearly finishing the fight.

The third frame appeared to be similar, but a reverse of the first. This time, Tybura edged a tiring Parkin out in term of strikes. The teammate of interim heavyweight champ Tom Aspinall’s, however, scored his own late takedown on the Polish veteran before the final horn.

All three judges gave Tybura the nod in rounds one and three, securing 29-28 scores and a win for the No. 8-ranked heavyweight.

“Tybur” has won three of four since a loss to Aspinall in July 2023.

Parkin, meanwhile, was 4-0 in the Octagon and 10-0 overall in MMA prior to UFC London. He earned a UFC contract following a win over Eduardo Neves on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022.

VIDEO: Marcin Tybura Bloodies Jhonata Diniz With Elbows To End His Undefeated Streak At UFC 309

The experience of Marcin Tybura ultimately proved to be too much for Jhonata Diniz at Saturday’s UFC 309 pay-per-view, as the veteran heavyweight took the victory following a doctor’s stoppage after two rounds.

The previously undefeated prospect had a strong start when he appeared to catch Tybura in the opening seconds of the fight, stunning him. The fight ended up going to the ground, where Diniz tried to work and get the finish. A leg-lock submission attempt, however, saw the Polish contender end his offensive attack and take top control for the remainder of the round.

Tybura brought even more intensity with seconds left in the second frame, working his way into full mount and landing some nasty elbows that busted Diniz wide open.

The doctor would not allow Diniz to continue into the third round, forcing the TKO win.

Tybura has won two of four and four of his last six now.

Meanwhile, this marked Diniz’s first loss in professional MMA. He and Derrick Lewis were scheduled to face off at UFC Edmonton earlier this month before Lewis was pulled from the card one day before the event.

Prior to tonight, Diniz, an alumnus of Dana White’s Contender Series, defeated Austen Lane and Karl Williams in the Octagon.

‘Forever Indebted To Serghei Spivac For That Quick Finish’ – MMA Fans React To Spivac’s Slick Armbar In UFC Fight Night Main Event

Serghei Spivac continued his upward momentum and scored revenge in the process with a quick finish of Marcin Tybura in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night.

Spivac got right on Tybura’s back as the round started, scoring an early takedown. The Polish heavyweight answered by reversing and getting in the Moldovan’s guard.

While Tybura tried to do work from there, it ultimately proved to be his undoing. Spivac locked his legs around the veteran’s arm and rolled through with an armbar from the back, scoring a verbal submission.

Tybura and Spivac first met at UFC Fight Night Norfolk in February 2020, with the former winning via unanimous decision.

“Polar Bear” has now won four of his last five fights and rebounds from a second-round TKO loss at the hands of Ciryl Gane last year in Paris. His only losses in the UFC have come against Tybura, Gane, Walt Harris, and current interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall.

Tybura, meanwhile, has now lost two of his last three fights.

  • Co-Main Event Canceled Days Out From UFC Fight Night: Tybura vs. Spivac 2

Co-Main Event Canceled Days Out From UFC Fight Night: Tybura vs. Spivac 2

Following this past weekend’s event in Abu Dhabi, the Octagon is set to return to the UFC Apex this Saturday for another Fight Night event.

Top ten heavyweights are set to meet in the main event as Serghei Spivac and Marcin Tybura run it back, following their first encounter over four years ago.

However, it was another fight on the card that many were singling out as the one to watch on August 10 in Las Vegas.

Co-main event billing was set to go to a bantamweight clash between Chris Gutierrez and Javid Basharat, a match-up that certainly stuck out on paper.

Both were looking to bounce back from losses in their last outings to try and push themselves towards the top 15 at 135 pounds.

Unfortunately, as reported by Alex Behunin, the fight is now off and the reaction from the fans on social media certainly points towards this being the bout that people were tuning in for.

“Well that’s decided then, I shall not be watching the fights”

    “Well there goes that card”

“Bro come on that was the only good fight on the card”

At this current time, it hasn’t been reported why the fight has been cancelled and what amendments will be made to the card as a result.

  • 5 Of The Most Underwhelming UFC Main Events In 2024

5 Of The Most Underwhelming UFC Main Events In 2024

The UFC has grown exponentially in the years since its inception way back in 1993. While the sport of MMA has come a long way since the days of groin strikes, headbutts and Tank Abbott, the demands placed on the global leader to satisfy an ever-growing audience in this social media-driven world has led to a swollen roster of contracted fighters.

The need to provide content to fulfil contractual obligations with TV networks has meant an increase in the overall number of events the UFC are pumping out these days. There are 53 shows scheduled to take place in 2024 alone, between pay-per-view events and ‘Fight Night’ cards, spread out over international locations such as Brazil, France, the United Kingdom, Abu Dhabi, Australia and of course, the United States.

With many of these events taking place in the relatively low-key surroundings of the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, some of these cards have become less about putting fans in seats and more about ticking off fights on some fighters’ contracts. The biggest names are being kept for the pay-per-views and the rest are being wheeled out with the sole purpose of filling in the gaps.

This Saturday’s Fight Night event (set to be headlined by a strawweight rematch between Amanda Lemos and Virna Jandiroba) is another card loaded with fights lacking in jeopardy and unlikely to have any telling effect on the title picture in any of the UFC weight divisions.

With that in mind, let’s look at five of the more underwhelming main events the UFC have offered up so far in 2024.

Roman Dolidze vs. Nassourdine Imavov, UFC Fight Night, February 3 (UFC Apex)

The UFC’ had a somewhat slow start to 2024. January brought us an underwhelming Fight Night card followed by a PPV event in Canada that lacked star names outside of the main event between Sean Strickland and Dricus Du Plessis. Coming into February, UFC fans were desperately in need of some high-stakes entertainment.

The Apex middleweight showdown between Dolidze and Imavov was not it. A main card entirely devoid of ranked fighters (outside of the main event) offered up one draw and four decisions, with only Randy Brown’s first-round knockout of Muslim Salikhov managing to give viewers something to get them out of their seats.

    https://youtu.be/Z6OLxve-G2Q?si=qRqf4ZqaM6mSHNkG

Both main event fighters came into this event in stuttering form. Dolidze hadn’t been seen in competitive action since losing to Marvin Vettori eleven months earlier, while Imavov was coming off the back of a difficult 2023. A decision loss to Sean Strickland early in the year was followed by his summer bout with Chris Curtis being declared a “no contest” after an accidental clash of heads.

A majority decision victory for Nassourdine Imavov after twenty-five less-than-inspiring minutes followed. Both fighters picked up victories last month and seem to be rising through the ranks at 185lbs, but their clash at the Apex last February is not one that will live long in the memory of many UFC fans.

Jack Hermansson vs. Joe Pyfer, UFC Fight Night, February 10 (UFC Apex)

A week later, with UFC 298 on the horizon and the MMA news cycle being dominated by the build-up to Alexander Volkanovski vs Ilia Topuria, fans were treated to another Apex event with a middleweight headliner. This time, admittedly, there was a little more intrigue surrounding the headline match-up as Joe Pyfer was coming off the back of an unbeaten start to his UFC career. “Bodybagz” had won all three of his fights inside the Octagon to that point, and finishes over Alen Amedovski, Gerald Meerschaert and Abdul Razak Alhassan had earmarked the 26-year-old as a fighter worth keeping an eye on.

Jack Hermansson looked like he was being positioned as the man to give up his place in the rankings to Pyfer. The Swede was returning from a year-long absence due to injury and had lost three of his previous five bouts at 185lbs. Against the odds, however, Hermansson derailed the Pyfer hype train and, after a strong opening two rounds from Pyfer, “The Joker” picked off his opponent from range over the remainder of the fight and walked away with a 48-47 scorecard from each of the three judges.

    Image: Jack Hermansson IG

Pyfer returned to winning ways last month with an impressive first-round knockout win over Marc-André Barriault at UFC 303 and he will hope his flat performance against Jack Hermansson is simply a bump in the road on his journey to the top of the middleweight division.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Shamil Gaziev, UFC Fight Night, March 2 (UFC Apex)

UFC 298 and the Fight Night that was held in Mexico City a week later gave fans a reminder of how good the atmosphere can be when big crowds and exciting fights are paired together. Ilia Topuria’s title victory in Anaheim, California followed by Brandon Royval’s win over Brandon Moreno the following week meant February had its’ fair share of entertainment inside the Octagon.

Fans were brought back down to earth with a bang on March 2nd however, as perennial heavyweight gatekeeper Jairzinho Rozenstruik was paired with Shamil Gaziev. Although Gaziev came into this event unbeaten at 12-0, the Bahraini fighter had only made one appearance inside the Octagon so far and many fans seemed perplexed at his positioning in the headline slot of a UFC event so soon.

    Image: Jairzinho Rozenstruik IG

The gulf in class was evident as Gaziev was utterly dominated by “Bigi Boy” from the off. After four one-sided rounds, a bruised and battered Gaziev was deemed unfit to continue following an inspection by referee Marc Goddard. Not only did Gaziev pick up the first loss of his professional career, his positioning in the main event slot so soon after signing with the UFC drew plenty of criticism from fans and fighters alike.

Tai Tuivasa vs. Marcin Tybura, UFC Fight Night, March 16 (UFC Apex)

Just two weeks later, in the wake of UFC 299, the “new normal” resumed in the UFC Apex as heavyweights Marcin Tybura and Tai Tuivasa collided in the main event of an event that featured such names as Ange Loosa, Isaac Dulgarian and Brian Battle on the main card.

    https://youtu.be/AAzOlhvQaNs?si=t5np0uJB0GkpTjjY

Tybura’s first-round submission victory would be his eighth win in ten fights helping the Polish fighter break into the top ten of the UFC’s heavyweight rankings. His opponent however was riding a three-fight losing streak coming into this bout and with the Australian taking significant damage in his defeats to Cyril Gane, Alexander Volkov and Sergei Pavlovich, the discussion among the MMA community in the wake of this defeat centred around whether or not “Bam Bam” should retire.

As it would turn out, Tybura made quick work of Tuivasa and the fight didn’t even see two minutes of action. Another underwhelming main event into the books, then.

Derrick Lewis vs. Rodrigo Nascimento, UFC Fight Night, May 11 (St. Louis)

April brought fight fans one of the most memorable fight cards in the history of the sport. UFC 300 was packed from top to bottom with current or former champions, and the knockouts delivered by Alex Pereira and Max Holloway during the main card will go down in history as two of the most exciting finishes inside the Octagon.

The following month, shortly after UFC 301 which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the UFC returned to American shores and went on the road to Saint Louis, Missouri. When the heavyweight main event between Derrick Lewis and Rodrigo Nascimento was announced, St. Louis-based welterweight Joaquin Buckley vowed to convince the UFC to switch things up and allow him to headline in his hometown. “New Mansa” was unsuccessful in his efforts however and had to make do with his place in the co-main event.

Lewis knocked out Nascimento in the main event but the fight failed to cause a ripple in the heavyweight rankings. “The Black Beast” had lost four of his previous six fights and is unlikely to enter the heavyweight title discussion anytime soon, while Nascimento had won three consecutive split-decision victories over unranked opponents prior to facing Lewis.

It seems in the modern world of the UFC, for every title fight or number-one contender match-up fans are granted, they are doomed to sit through multiple filler events behind closed doors at the UFC Apex.

  • Jairzinho Rozenstruik To Return Against Marcin Tybura on Feb. 26

A UFC heavyweight showdown between Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Marcin Tybura is set to take place at UFC Vegas 49 on February 26.

MMA journalist Marcel Dorff was among the first to report the news.

Rozenstruik and Tybura were both in the heavyweight title discussion before recent losses. Rozenstruik fell to Curtis Blaydes at UFC 266 while Tybura lost just weeks later at UFC 267 against Alexander Volkov.

Rozenstruik has traded wins and losses since his knockout loss to Francis Ngannou in just 20 seconds at UFC 249. He’s earned wins most recently against Junior dos Santos and Augusto Sakai.

Tybura was arguably the hottest heavyweight contender before a loss to Volkov. He had won five fights in a row over the likes of Ben Rothwell, Greg Hardy, and Walt Harris.

The full card for UFC Vegas 49 has yet to be announced, but the card will be headlined by top lightweight contenders Beneil Dariush and Islam Makhachev. The winner of that matchup will more than likely be next in line for the 155-pound title.

Before losing to Blaydes, Rozenstruik had called for potential matchups with the likes of Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic at heavyweight. Both men remain sidelined and are expected to return at some point in 2022.

As for Tybura, he remains a potential dark horse in the heavyweight division. Previous wins over Stefan Struve and Andrei Arlovski helped propel him into the heavyweight rankings.

Rozenstruik is listed at No. 6 and Tybura is slated at No. 9 in the latest UFC heavyweight rankings. The winner of this matchup could get a Top-5 opponent next.

What is your prediction for this fight?
