“No Sense of Urgency” – Marlon Vera’s Skid Continues At UFC Mexico

David Martinez has made a statement that he is a true bantamweight contender, and the future of Marlon “Chito” Vera might be uncertain, as Martinez scored the win in their UFC Mexico co-main event bout.

Martinez got off to a strong start, working over Vera with his striking on the front foot and making Vera miss. Vera brought the fight to the ground, but Martinez stayed in control of the fight.

Vera looked to build momentum again early in the second round, but Martinez kept distance and used his speed to land and cut Vera off. Martinez landed a pair of solid punches midway through the round, and while Martinez ate a head kick from “Chito,” he stayed on his feet and scored a sweep to control the action on the ground again.

Vera looked to land power in the third round, but Martinez’s speed proved to be the difference again. Vera landed a pair of strong left hands in the closing seconds, but it wasn’t enough.

Martinez extends his win streak to 10 and is now 3-0 in the UFC since coming in from Dana White’s Contender Series. Martinez entered tonight’s bout with a finish of Saimon Oliveira and a decision win over Rob Font.

Vera has now lost four straight and five of his last six, with defeats to the likes of Sean O’Malley, Deiveson Figueiredo, Cory Sandhagen, and Aiemann Zahabi.

Marlon Vera Was Told By His Team to Start Pushing The Pace After Most Recent Loss

UFC veteran Marlon Vera has revealed what his team has told him to work on in the wake of his controversial defeat to Aiemann Zahabi.

On Saturday night, Marlon Vera suffered a narrow loss at the hands of Aiemann Zahabi at UFC Vancouver. As we look ahead to the future, many have already started to question what kind of future he has in the division – whereas others are busy suggesting that ‘Chito’ was actually robbed of a victory by the judges.

Marlon Vera is the kind of fighter who will be able to bounce back from this latest disappointment but at the same time, a win here could’ve really vaulted him back into contention. In an interview after the event, Vera had the following to say.

Marlon Vera reveals advice from team after UFC Vancouver

“After the fight, I was hurt but didn’t want to celebrate. I went back to my room, showered, and stayed there with my team talking for hours. We talked about pushing faster in the first round. Life gives you hurdles and obstacles, you jump them or go around them. It’s part of the road and it’s okay.”

Vera needs to get back to being the kind of explosive, dominant fighter that he was once upon a time – and if he’s able to do that, then perhaps he can start to string a bit of a run together. Either way, you’d have to imagine he’ll fancy a second showdown with Zahabi at some point in the future.

“Missed Opportunity” – Fans & Fighters Debate And Discuss After Aiemann Zahabi Edges Out Marlon Vera On Scorecards At UFC Vancouver

Aiemann Zahabi continues to make his climb up the bantamweight rankings, as he came away with a decision victory over former title challenger Marlon “Chito” Vera at UFC Vancouver.

Vera pressed the action early, opening up a cut on Zahabi’s nose, though Zahabi had his fair share of moments, appearing to out-strike Vera in the opening frame. Vera then pressured Zahabi during the second round, which included a jab in particular that appeared to rock Zahabi. The Canadian, however, managed to survive the second round and rallied in the third, digging with crisp combinations and leg kicks.

All three judges scored the bout 29-28, with Zahabi getting two judges’ nods to score the split decision win.

Zahabi has now won seven straight fights, which also includes a victory over Jose Aldo earlier this year at UFC 315.

Vera has now lost three straight and four of his last five. His last win came against Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292.

  • Marlon Vera Set To Face Opponent On Seven-Fight Win Streak At UFC Fight Night On May 3

Marlon Vera Set To Face Opponent On Seven-Fight Win Streak At UFC Fight Night On May 3

Marlon Vera is seemingly set for a showdown with a stylistically challenging opponent in his Octagon return.

On Wednesday, MMA journalist Marcel Dorff reported on X that former UFC bantamweight title challenger Marlon Vera is set to clash with Mario Bautista at a UFC Fight Night event on May 3 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The fight announcement was first revealed by MMA content creator Tuck, who claimed that the matchup would serve as the co-main event for the card.

“Chito” is looking to bounce back after a one-sided unanimous decision loss to former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC Abu Dhabi in August 2024. The defeat marked his second consecutive setback, following a decision loss to Sean O’Malley in their rematch at UFC 299 in March, where he fell short in his bid for the 135-pound title.

The 32-year-old Ecuadorian was riding the momentum of a four-fight win streak before his run came to a halt against Cory Sandhagen in March 2023. Since then, he has managed just one victory — a unanimous decision over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292. Vera now finds himself at 6-5 in his last 11 outings.

Meanwhile, Bautista is riding the wave of a seven-fight win streak. He was last seen in action at UFC 307 this past October, where he secured a hard-fought split decision victory over UFC Hall of Famer Jose Aldo. The 31-year-old American hasn’t tasted defeat since March 2021, when he suffered a second-round knockout loss to Trevin Jones at UFC 259.

UFC Des Moines is set to be headlined by a pivotal bantamweight showdown between Sandhagen and Figueiredo. However, while the card is shaping up to be a potential must-watch event, the promotion has yet to announce the official venue.

  • Aljamain Sterling Uses O’Malley vs. Vera To Justify Merab Dvalishvili’s Preferred Next Opponent

Aljamain Sterling Uses O’Malley vs. Vera To Justify Merab Dvalishvili’s Preferred Next Opponent

Despite the UFC’s attempt to get the ball rolling toward the next bantamweight title fight, Merab Dvalishvili has other plans in mind.

The 135-pound weight class crowned a new champion in the main event of UFC 306, where Dvalishvili comfortably defeated Sean O’Malley.

It was known going into the fight that Umar Nurmagomedov was likely going to be next, and that was only solidified when he was there in-person for the new champ being asked about the prospect of facing him.

Dvalishvili, however, believes that it is Deiveson Figueiredo who is the most deserving contender because he has more wins over top bantamweight contenders.

Aljamain Sterling Says Merab Dvalishvili Has Strong Case For Deiveson Figueiredo Being Next

In an interview with Submission Radio, Aljamain Sterling weighed in with his thoughts on Dvalishvili’s stance on his first title challenger.

The former bantamweight champion and long-term friend and training partner of the Georgian titleholder believes that his reasoning makes a lot of sense.

“Funk Master” pointed to how there have been many more instances where a title challenger was less deserving of this opportunity than Figueiredo currently is.

With this in mind, Sterling hopes that his teammate will get to have some input into deciding what will be the first step of his title reign.

“I don’t know who the UFC actually wants to push. I know Merab wants to face Deiveson Figueiredo based on his merit of what he’s done in the bantamweight division. I believe he’s beaten Rob Font, Cody Garbrandt, submitted him, and ‘Chito’ Vera. So it’s kind of hard to argue Merab’s point. I do understand that Umar did beat Sandhagen, who was ranked #2 at the time, so there’s an argument there. But I think I can see both sides, and if the champ wants to fight Deiveson Figueiredo, I mean, O’Malley got to fight a guy that wasn’t even ranked in the top five (Marlon Vera).

“So I don’t think it’s that crazy of a matchup. I don’t think the guy’s undeserving. I don’t think anyone could say he’s undeserving. But, you know, the UFC is going to do what makes the most money for them and hopefully the champ has a say in that.”

  • Former Opponent Uses McGregor Fight To Highlight O’Malley’s Tactical Error Versus Dvalishvili

Former Opponent Uses McGregor Fight To Highlight O’Malley’s Tactical Error Versus Dvalishvili

Marlon Vera recently drew parallels to one of Conor McGregor’s fights to highlight the strategic missteps Sean O’Malley made in his bout against Merab Dvalishvili.

“Suga’s” reign as champion came to a close last weekend in the main event of Noche UFC 306 at The Sphere in Las Vegas, where he endured a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Dvalishvili.

O’Malley struggled to find his rhythm throughout the fight as Dvalishvili stormed in, guns blazing, unleashing an unyielding assault of takedowns. The defending champion had no answers for the onslaught and ultimately fell short, losing the bout.

O’Malley initially seemed reluctant to let his strikes fly during the fight, possibly due to “The Machine’s” dominance in chain wrestling and calculated approach, which suffocated the American’s ability to find his footing.

Interestingly, “Chito,” who has shared the Octagon with O’Malley twice, echoed similar sentiments regarding the defending champion’s performance…

Vera Believes O’Malley Missed Early Striking Opportunity To Counter Dvalishvili’s Gameplan

During a recent video on his YouTube channel, Vera shared his thoughts on the title bout between O’Malley and Dvalishvili at Noche UFC 306. The former title challenger suggested that if “Suga” had landed some early shots on a fresh Dvalishvili, the outcome could have swung in his favor.

Vera pointed out that Dvalishvili has been rocked before, referencing his previous knockdowns at the hands of Henry Cejudo and Marlon Moraes.

“he main event, it was a guy that I just fought two fights ago against Merab,” Vera said. “That was a great fight. I mean, I really thought if Sean could have hit Merab early in the fight, things could change, based on him being dropped by Cejudo and Marlon Moraes, but he just couldn’t land. Merab has that kind of jerky move like it’s hard to hit him in a way you can snipe this guy. You almost have to fight him.”

“Chito” went on to compare O’Malley’s tactical blunder to Conor McGregor’s second-round TKO victory over Chad Mendes at UFC 189 in July 2015. Vera highlighted that every time “The Notorious” broke free from Mendes’ takedowns, he immediately closed the distance and applied pressure. In contrast, O’Malley did the opposite against “The Machine”, allowing Dvalishvili to dictate the fight.

“I would say the one thing, comparing the fight to Chad Mendes and Conor, is that every time Conor got up, he would crawl right away, like he would be in his face immediately. Every time Sean got up, there was a little separation, so that probably messed with his rhythm. And Merab, we all know, can just take you down over and over. So I think, in my opinion, you just have to sit down and fight him. He’s going to take you down regardless, so you might as well just go crazy on him. But overall, great fight. Congratulations to the new champion.”

O’Malley captured the bantamweight title against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 in August 2023. He went on to defend his belt in impressive style against Vera at UFC 299 this past March, where he avenged the sole setback on his Octagon record.

Following his recent defeat, the 29-year-old Montana native shared that he has no plans to step back into the Octagon anytime soon, hinting at a potential return around mid-2025.

  • 4 Positives & 3 Negatives From UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov

4 Positives & 3 Negatives From UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov

On Saturday, the mixed martial arts leader returned for its latest event, UFC Fight Night: Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov.

After staging its return to Manchester, England, for the UFC 304 pay-per-view last weekend, MMA’s leading promotion remained on the road for a card inside the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Before returning to the venue for its annual numbered event this October (Topuria vs. Holloway! Topuria vs. Holloway! Topuria vs. Holloway!), the UFC put on a Fight Night event topped by elite bantamweight contenders Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov. The former interim title challenger and his undefeated Russian opponent were looking to stake their claims for a shot at the winner of Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili.

Saturday’s co-headliner, meanwhile, saw another fighter look to keep their 0 as Sharabutdin Magomedov attempted to make it three from three in the UFC at the expense of Michał Oleksiejczuk.

Before that, a second crucial contest at 135 pounds went down. Making the walk for the first time since his defeat to O’Malley in their UFC 299 title fight, Marlon Vera hoped to revive his championship ambitions by stalling the two-weight goals of ex-flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo.

Elsewhere on the lineup, the likes of former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and strawweight submission specialist Mackenzie Dern were among those in action. But did those names come together to put on an entertaining few hours of MMA action?

Let’s find out with all the positives and negatives from UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs. Nurmagomedov.

    Negative – Howard? Anybody Home?

UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi started out with zero finishes and a judging horror show. Not exactly ideal, is it?

In one of the many decisions that kicked off the preliminary card on Saturday, Sam Hughes handed Victoria Dudakova the first defeat of her career, outpointing the Russian on two of the three judges’ scorecards after three rounds.

But the win for “Sampage” (surely top three for the worst nicknames in MMA? Sorry, Sam) wasn’t a certainty as Bruce Buffer read out the scorecards. That was courtesy of Howard Hughes, who showed that he has no business sitting cageside by scoring all three rounds for Dudakova.

Two? Justifiable. But to give the second frame to the 25-year-old is utterly ludicrous.

I largely don’t buy into judging criticism when plenty of ‘robbery’ cries derive from lost bets and fan favorites not getting the nod. But put Howie’s Saturday scorecard in the group of genuinely terrible verdicts in 2024.

Negative – Well, Keith, That Was Nonsense?

At what point do we accept that the “No Nonsense” Keith Peterson does, indeed, allow nonsense?!

A week on from a UFC 304 event that saw fence grabs galore and the most egregious instance of cheating in recent memory from Muhammad Mokaev — none of which were actually punished with point deductions, by the way — referee incompetence also arrived in the Middle East.

In fairness to Peterson, he was tasked with watching the heavyweightest of heavyweight fights in Don’Tale Mayes vs. Shamil Gaziev. I’m not sure there’s a human in the world who could have watched that slop and stayed focused on their task.

During one exchange that saw the one-time UFC headliner (a travesty) initiate grappling and push Mayes up against the cage, the American had a handful of Gaziev’s shorts and kept ahold despite the ref’s firm warning.

Peterson broke things up and took a point, right? RIGHT?! Of course not, he simply said he would, and then didn’t. Rules do not exist in MMA, folks. The worst part about this is, if Peterson was going to take zero action, why pause the fight and hamper Gaziev’s momentum in that position?

I don’t often agree with Daniel Cormier’s commentary, but his take was so spot on that it’s only right to let him close out this negative…

    Positive – Murzakanov Atomics ‘Atomic’

Outside of a few names (Alex Pereira, Jiří Procházka, and co.), the light heavyweight division isn’t exactly the most enthralling. But one man who is quickly joining the top figures on Mt. Entertainment excelled again in Abu Dhabi.

That man is Azamat Murzakanov, a hard-fisted Russian who has remained unbeaten in his career through four appearances inside the Octagon thus far. That run has seen only one bout go the distance, and of his three knockouts, the most brutal came at the Etihad Arena on Saturday.

The victim of his charge was Alonzo Menifield, who returned less than three months on from a 12-second KO at the hands of Carlos Ulberg. While not quite as quick, Murzakanov sent “Atomic” to a similar fate, putting him on wobbly legs with some hard punches before utterly flattening him with ground-and-pound for the stoppage.

While wins over the likes of Dustin Jacoby and Menifield make it hard to tout “The Professional” for title contention at 205 pounds at this point, he’s certainly a major threat to those above him in the ladder. And if he keeps delivering finishes like the kind he did on Saturday, we’re in for some fun.

    Positive – ‘El Fenómeno’ Strikes

I assume many may have been in the same boat when I say that Joel Álvarez is a name I’d largely forgotten about leading in to the latest UFC Fight Night event.

In all fairness, the Spaniard hadn’t competed in over a year since his submission of Marc Diakiese in London. “El Fenómeno” had previously had his undefeated UFC record blemished in vicious and bloody fashion by some Arman Tsarukyan elbows.

With one fight in three straight calendar years, Álvarez was in need of some momentum after having two canceled fights already in 2024. Well, consider momentum acquired, and consider his name firmly back in our minds.

For his comeback fight, the Spanish standout was tasked with adding to the woes of the highly regarded Elves Brener. The Brazilian broke through in 2023 with a 3-0 year that saw him finish seventh for MMA News’ Newcomer of the Year award, but his first outing of 2024 concluded with him falling to the fast-charging Myktybek Orolbai.

And Brener was unable to bounce back in Abu Dhabi, as Alvarez put on a mightily fine performance en route to a TKO in the third and final round. The finish was set up by some brutal knees, before ground-and-pound got the job done.

Back in the Octagon, back on a win streak, and back on the radar at 155 pounds.

    Negative – How Many More?

Tony. Tony, Tony, Tony (to be said in a slow and worried tone, not some sort of English football chant).

Tony Ferguson’s latest outing inside the Octagon was close to worst-case scenario, as he fell to yet another defeat in just minutes — although, in all honesty, it’s a relief at this point to see him exit a fight without major damage.

Like most, a loss is always the expected outcome when I see “El Cucuy” enter the cage these days. But even with that outlook on his floundering career, the rapid nature of his submission loss to Michael Chiesa was a surprise.

A retirement has been overdue for a while now, but after losses to Pimblett and “Maverick” to leave him with the unwanted record of suffering the most straight defeats in UFC history, there can be zero doubt about what the future should hold for Ferguson.

Unfortunately, while the gloves came off and it appeared as though Chiesa had passed over his microphone time for the end, Ferguson only half-retired. And in all honesty, with his frequent remarks about making another run as recently as last year, that’s as good as calling for another five-fight contract in the case of “El Cucuy.”

Given how long this term has been appropriate, it’s no longer right to say ‘it’s time’ for him to call it quits. It’s time for the UFC to do so for him.

    Positive – Figgy

Deiveson Figueiredo is absolutely a problem in the bantamweight division.

Although a move up appeared clearly due following the end of his second stint on the flyweight throne, I’m not sure many predicted this kind of start to life at 135 pounds for “Deus Da Guerra.”

His debut against Rob Font was slick and impressive. His finish of Cody Garbrandt at UFC 300 added a former champion to his record in the division. His domination of Marlon Vera has no doubt earned him a top-five ranking.

More than just outpointing “Chito” in Abu Dhabi, Figueiredo became the first to knock the Ecuadorian down — a feat that even Sean O’Malley and his knee failed to achieve at UFC 299 this past March.

In terms of pure skill and fighting ability, I’m not sure the Brazilian’s superiority over Vera was ever in doubt. But to see him handle a tricky customer like “Chito” in that fashion was eyebrow-raising, and it also sees another big name added to the title equation at 135 pounds.

    What. A. Division.

    Positive – Bantamweight Main Events

We’ve had more heavyweight UFC main events in 2024 than bantamweight. Has there ever been a bigger farce in mixed martial arts?

For all the Shamil Gaziev vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruiks we have to sit through, there’s one reason we keep watching. Because a Cory Sandhagen vs. Umar Nurmagomedov could come along eventually.

Talent! Actual fighting talent, with technique, and strategy, and tactics. As expected, “The Sandman” and his undefeated Russian opponent battled in a highly entertaining chess match to close out Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi.

The man having his hand raised at the end of it was Nurmagomedov, who rose to the occasion in what marked by far the toughest test of his blossoming career to date. And while his title ambitions have taken a slight hit, it’s hard to say Sandhagen’s stock dipped.

A round of applause for a bantamweight main event, folks — only the second of the year and the first not to include the title. Would it take a rocket scientist to explain that there are 50 different 135-pound matchups that would be better headliners than the Marcin Tybura vs. Serghei Spivac atrocity we’re in for next weekend?

Marlon Vera Releases First Statement On UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi Loss: ‘Today I Failed Myself’

Marlon Vera has now found himself on a rough patch as of late, and it continued at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi, where he dropped a decision to former two-time flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo.

Figueiredo was able to outwork “Chito” with a solid pacing and using his strength. While Vera had stronger strikes during the second round, “Deus Da Guerra” fought fire with fire and knocked the Ecuadorian down in the third.

The former bantamweight title challenger took to social media after the fight, thanking his supporters and stating that he let himself down inside the Octagon.

Marlon Vera Admits to Failing Himself After Dropping Third In Last Four At UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi

“Today I failed myself,” Vera wrote (translated). “Thanks to my family, my team and my people who push me to continue, maybe I will come back very quickly this time, but that’s life, sometimes you have to take some time for the mind and body to recover! Once again thanks for those who are there.”

Vera has now lost three of his last four outings, with his sole win in this stretch coming against Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292 in Boston last August.

“Chito” challenged Sean O’Malley for the bantamweight title at UFC 299 in Miami this past March, serving as a rematch after Vera handed O’Malley his sole loss back in 2020. The Ecuadorian lost the title fight in convincing fashion.

The MMA leader staged its latest UFC Fight Night event on Saturday, and MMA News has you covered with all the action.

After taking the Octagon back to Manchester in England for a pay-per-view card last weekend, the promotion’s return to the United Arab Emirates saw the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi play host to a 13-fight lineup.

In the main attraction, undefeated bantamweight up-and-comer Umar Nurmagomedov extended his perfect record en route to a potential first shot at UFC gold. Unsuccessful in his attempt to stall the Russian’s rise was Cory Sandhagen, who fell on the wrong side of three lopsided scorecards.

All eyes were also on the co-headliner, which saw another unbeaten Russian in Sharabutdin Magomedov in action as he faced Michał Oleksiejczuk on short notice, as well as a second crucial contest at 135 pounds between recent title challenger Marlon Vera and former flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo.

Deiveson Figueiredo continued to show how solid he is in his new bantamweight home, as he defeated former title challenger Marlon Vera via unanimous decision at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi.

As he normally does, Vera got off to a slow start in the opening frame, with Figueiredo utilizing his wrestling and starting to work a good pace with his strikes. “Chito,” however, appeared to battle back in the second round, landing stronger strikes.

Figueiredo still brought some trouble with his pacing and stance switching, and he finally countered Vera’s strength in the third when he scored a knockdown.

Overall, two judges scored the fight 29-28, and one 30-27, all in the Brazilian’s favor.

Figueiredo, the former two-time UFC flyweight champion, is now 3-0 at 135 pounds following wins over Rob Font and Cody Garbrandt.

Vera, meanwhile, has now dropped three of his last four, one of which was his unsuccessful attempt to take the bantamweight title from Sean O’Malley at UFC 299 in Miami this past March.

After staging its return to Manchester, England, for the UFC 304 pay-per-view last weekend, MMA’s leading promotion has remained on the road for a card inside the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Before returning to the venue for its annual numbered event this October, the UFC will put on a Fight Night event topped by elite bantamweight contenders Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov. The former interim title challenger and his undefeated Russian opponent will be looking to stake their claims for a shot at the winner of Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili.

Saturday’s co-headliner, meanwhile, will see another unbeaten name back in action as Sharabutdin Magomedov looks to make it three from three in the UFC at the expense of Michał Oleksiejczuk.

Before that, a second crucial contest at 135 pounds will go down. Making the walk for the first time since his defeat to O’Malley in their UFC 299 title fight, Marlon Vera will look to revive his championship ambitions before stalling the two-weight goals of ex-flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo.

Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera Gives Props To Sean O’Malley, Talks Viral Knee: ‘Really Kinda Shocked Me…’

Marlon “Chito” Vera returns this weekend in Abu Dhabi where he looks to get back to winning ways in the bantamweight division.

Vera faces a tough test in former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo but he has all the motivation he needs after how his last fight went.

The challenger was unable to really put his stamp on his 135-pound title fight with Sean O’Malley at UFC 299, where he was beaten convincingly over the five round contest.

His toughness was enough to keep him in the fight but even that was tested at several points by some sniper-like striking from “Suga”.

One strike, in particular, stole the show in March after O’Malley landed a knee that sounded even worse than it looked.

Marlon Vera Says A Punch In The Fifth Round Hurt More Than Viral Knee

Before he makes the walk once again this weekend, Vera reflected on his last fight and some of the damage that he took.

It says a lot about his heart and durability that he was able to make it to the final bell with many finding it hard to believe that he continued to fight on after that knee strike landed in the second round.

Vera spoke during his media day interview about what was going through his mind at that moment and how much damage the knee actually caused.

“Just to make a comparison, the punch in the fifth round that land perfectly on my eye, it wasn’t an eye poke but it felt like one, hurt me a million times more. Like I was fully blind, I was like, ‘F***!’ It was a perfect punch, props on him but I mean the knee really like kind of shocked me.

“I was like, ‘F*** I got clipped with something big,’ and I know it was the knee but I wasn’t like… my legs were there. I was just like, ‘F*** that really hurt,’ In terms of a hit but I would say my brain and my legs were there. I was just like don’t do that again. It was pretty much almost the same knee that I hit Font with.”

Marlon Vera Questions Merab Dvalishvili’s Chin Ahead Of Sean O’Malley Title Fight: ‘If You’re Getting Dropped By Cejudo…’

UFC bantamweight Marlon Vera can see former opponent Sean O’Malley stopping Merab Dvalishvili early when they square off at the Sphere.

O’Malley, the reigning 135-pound champion, is currently gearing up for his second defense of the title since winning it from Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 in Boston last August. “Sugar” got his divisional rule underway in emphatic style this past March, dominantly outpointing “Chito” in their headlining rematch at UFC 299 in Miami.

Vera will be the first to return to action, battling Deiveson Figueiredo this Saturday in Abu Dhabi. The champ, meanwhile, is slated to put his gold on the line opposite Dvalishvili in the main event of UFC 306/Noche UFC.

O’Malley will look to stall the Georgian challenger’s title ambitions inside the unique surroundings of the Sphere on September 14. And should he connect with a shot early, Vera thinks he has a good chance of doing so…

Vera: O’Malley Could Finish Dvalishvili ‘If He Catches Him Early’

During his appearance at media day ahead of this weekend’s UFC Fight Night, Vera looked ahead to his opportunity to revive his title ambitions and commented on the next championship bout set for the 135-pound division.

After laying some heavy praise on his most recent opponent, the Ecuadorian gave a dismissive take on Dvalishvili, highlighting the knockdown he suffered opposite Henry Cejudo this past February as evidence he can be knocked out.

“(O’Malley’s) a great fighter. I would be more worried about Merab’s chin,” Vera said. “He’s been dropped by everybody. I mean, if you get dropped by Henry Cejudo, good lord. F*ck, that’s a f*cking four-foot motherf*cker right there. If he (O’Malley) catches him early, the fight could be over.”

O’Malley has shared a similar prediction, vowing to repeat the feat he achieved opposite Dvalishvili’s teammate in 2023 to deliver a statement-making second successful defense in Las Vegas this fall.

  • Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera Warned Against Waiting Too Long Against ‘Well-Rounded’ Deiveson Figueiredo: ‘He May Never Get That Moment’

Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera Warned Against Waiting Too Long Against ‘Well-Rounded’ Deiveson Figueiredo: ‘He May Never Get That Moment’

Josh Thomson and “Big” John McCarthy recently shared insightful advice for Marlon Vera ahead of his upcoming bout against Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC Fight Night Abu Dhabi.

The two bantamweight stars are set to square off on the main card of the highly anticipated UFC Fight Night this weekend, taking place at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, United Arab Emirates.

“Chito” is rebounding from a one-sided title fight loss to reigning bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley at UFC 299 this past March. In his first championship opportunity, Vera was dominated over five rounds, losing the momentum he had gained from his decisive victory over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292 last August.

Meanwhile, Figueiredo, a former multi-time UFC flyweight champion, aims to maintain his unbeaten streak since moving up to bantamweight last year. “Deus da Guerra” has already secured two impressive victories in the division, defeating Rob Font and most recently achieving a second-round submission against Cody Garbrandt at UFC 300 this past April.

Although Vera previously stated on social media that he is bringing a “2.0” version of himself, equipped with new skills, Thomson and McCarthy warn that the 31-year-old Ecuadorian must exercise caution and cannot afford to take many risks against an all-around fighter like Figueiredo…

Thomson Believes Vera Falls Short In Wrestling & Grappling Against Figueiredo

During a recent episode of the WEIGHING IN podcast, Thomson and McCarthy delved into the upcoming clash between Vera and Figueiredo. “The Punk” remarked that while he believes Vera is a strong match against the Brazilian, “Chito” tends to become flustered when on his back, a vulnerability that could prove perilous in this contest.

“I think that if there’s one way that Marlon loses this fight, it’s in the wrestling and the grappling department,” Thomson said. “You know, Marlon is good in jiu-jitsu, but he’s also someone that just settles in on the bottom and tries to land elbows or punches from there. But I think Figueiredo is someone that will grind, he will land, he will take chances. He’s proven that he will take heavy chances in terms of heavy ground and pound. He’s a well-rounded fighter, Figueiredo is someone that can take this fight anywhere, but ‘Chito’ has got to keep this fight on the feet.”

Thomson further noted that Vera has a habit of waiting for the opportune moment to land a powerful strike but given “Deus da Guerra’s” relentless pace, that strategy becomes exceedingly difficult.

“What also concerns me with ‘Chito’ is that we’ve seen it before. We saw it with the Rob Font thing, we saw it with the other fighters. He waits for the moment to get the knockout, he waits and waits. We may not see that; he may never get that moment because Figueiredo is going to be in and out so fast. He’s going to be the way faster fighter.”

  • Marlon Vera Reveals Change In Approach For Deiveson Figueiredo After Loss To Sean O’Malley: ‘I’ve Got To Do Something Different’

Marlon Vera Reveals Change In Approach For Deiveson Figueiredo After Loss To Sean O’Malley: ‘I’ve Got To Do Something Different’

UFC bantamweight contender Marlon Vera begins his pursuit of a second title shot this weekend, and he’ll seemingly do so with a fresh strategy.

Vera is set to make the walk on Saturday’s UFC Fight Night main card in Abu Dhabi, where the Etihad Arena plays host to some key contests at 135 pounds.

While that most notably includes the main event title eliminator between Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov, “Chito” will be looking to revive his championship ambitions earlier on in proceedings opposite former two-time UFC flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo.

The Ecuadorian had his first shot at gold end unsuccessfully at UFC 299 in Miami this past March. He was unable to repeat his 2021 victory over Sean O’Malley, falling to a lopsided decision defeat in their rematch.

As has been a trend for much of his career, Vera was criticized in the aftermath for a low-volume approach that was focused on landing a fight-ending blow.

While such a strategy saw him come from behind to knock out the likes of Dominick Cruz in the past, Vera knows that change is needed if he’s to reach the mountaintop.

Vera On Figueiredo Fight: ‘Maybe You Will See Me Throw More…’

During a recent interview with former UFC champion Michael Bisping and light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith, Vera looked ahead to his first outing since O’Malley exacted revenge at his expense earlier this year.

“Chito” acknowledged some of the well-known flaws in his fight style, but noted that work has been done to address them as he gears up to share the cage with “Deus Da Guerra” on August 3.

“Some adjustments on the conditioning and getting my feet a bit more mobile. I’ve been feeling great,” Vera said. “What I personally think was like, okay, I have great grappling but I’m not the fighter that wants to take you down and hold you down. For this time, we did a lot of grappling so I can get back kind of to my roots. But I also want to like, put all my numbers together instead of just looking for power.

“I know I hit hard and that sometimes makes me stay in the mud. Because I have great defense. But it’s like, I need to do something different. I didn’t win the (title) fight; I need to do something different,” Vera continued. “Maybe in this fight you will see me throw more. Instead of just looking for that big one, I’m gonna do a little more.”

Vera will look to show the improvements he’s made in recent months come fight night in the Middle East, as he looks to show that his title ambitions didn’t fizzle away entirely at the hands of O’Malley at UFC 299.

  • UFC Bantamweight Prospect Doesn’t See Any Talent In ‘Sh*t Fighter’ Marlon Vera: ‘Nice Guy, But A F*cking Heavy Bag’

One UFC bantamweight up-and-comer has some firm opinions on the skillset that his division’s most recent title challenger possesses.

Marlon Vera unsuccessfully competed for the 135-pound gold this past March at UFC 299, riding on his past victory over champion Sean O’Malley to secure a rematch on the back of a 1-1 record in 2023.

While the Ecuadorian vowed to repeat his first-round knockout of “Sugar” in Miami, he was outclassed across five rounds, with O’Malley recording his first title defense in dominant fashion.

Vera came under fire from plenty of fans and fellow fighters in the aftermath, many of whom questioned his ability to hang with the very best.

According to this prospect, he can’t even hang with the newcomers…

Loughran Not Impressed By Vera’s Ability: ‘I’m 1-1 In The UFC & Think I’d Run Through Him’

During a recent interview with InsideFighting, UFC bantamweight Caolan Loughran gave his take on some of the prospects, stars, and champions plying their trade in the sport’s premier promotion.

When Vera’s name came up, the Irishman said he sees nothing but a “terrible” fighter.

He did have some positive things to say about the Ecuadorian as a person. But when it comes to action inside the cage, Loughran believes that just two fights into his UFC career, even he could make a fight against Vera look easy.

“Sh*t fighter. Terrible fighter. I’m being honest,” Loughran said. “He got to the UFC title but that was purely off the O’Malley first one. Don’t rate him in any area.

“Fair play to him and what he’s doing for his daughter. It’s a lovely story. Nice guy. I just think he’s a f*cking heavy bag,” Loughran continued. “I am 1-1 in the UFC and I think I’d run through ‘Chito,’ who just fought for a title. Put him on his back and he’s like a fish out of water. … I think he’s a sh*t fighter.”

The next person looking to “run through” Vera will be Deiveson Figueiredo, who is set to share the cage with “Chito” at the upcoming UFC Fight Night event in Abu Dhabi early next month.

Should he fall to a losing skid in 2024 at the hands of “Deus Da Guerra,” Vera’s hopes for a second title shot down the line will take a firm hit.

Dana White Talks About What Makes Conor McGregor Special That You Simply Can’t Teach

During a recent appearance on the In Search of Excellence Podcast, UFC President Dana White spoke about the emergence of Conor McGregor as a superstar.

White recalls his first encounter with “The Notorious” where they met in Las Vegas after he was signed to the promotion.

From the moment he met him, the UFC boss knew that they had something special on their hands if the confident Irishman could back it up in the cage.

White also emphasised how despite coming from a working class background and cashing welfare cheques, McGregor is an excellent businessman with a great mind for the sport.

He credited the former UFC champ-champ with having the kind of instincts that you simply can’t teach, comparing him to one of the biggest combat sports stars that came before him.

“If you look at all the brands that he has built off of his brand, very very sharp kid. When you hear some speak, he’s very articulate about fighting. Again when you talk about fighter IQ, like Tyson, Conor’s fight IQ is off the charts.”

Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera Says He Thinks But Can’t Prove That José Aldo Was Juicing For Return Fight At UFC 301

José Aldo is back in the mix at bantamweight following his triumphant return to the Octagon earlier this month.

At UFC 301 in Brazil, the former featherweight great looked back to his best against Jonathan Martinez, earning himself a spot in the top 10 rankings in the process.

One fight that could be next for Aldo in this final run of his career is a rematch with Marlon “Chito” Vera who currently sits in the #4 spot.

Vera suffered a defeat to Aldo back in December of 2020 which he rebounded from with a great winning streak.

During a recent appearance on the Jaxxon Podcast, Vera suggested that he isn’t sure whether or not his former opponent was being tested for his return fight.

“Chito” didn’t say for certain but he does have his suspicions about what went down in Brazil.

“Check this out, fighting in Brazil, no USADA, those [Jose Aldo] traps were f****** thick so… José might go to those f****** farmers and [juice]. I mean they’re notorious for that, that’s normal in Brazil right? I don’t know, I cannot prove it but I mean you fight in Brazil, I don’t think they’re testing.”

Carlos Ulberg Speaks On Jamahal Hill Fight & Conor McGregor Inspiration

The opportunity to fight on June 29 at UFC 303 is going to be massive for all of the fighters on the undercard but especially Carlos Ulberg.

International Fight Week is set to be even bigger than usual thanks to the long-awaited return of Conor McGregor in the main event.

Ulberg wasn’t originally booked for the card but after calling his shot and putting in a great performance earlier this month, he got the opportunity to replace Khalil Rountree and face former champion Jamahal Hill.

In a recent interview with Engage on YouTube, he spoke for the first time about this fight and where he stands on McGregor and fighting on the same card as his comeback.

“We’re going up against Hill, I think he’s number three at the moment so that’s some really good news that puts us in a really good spot and I’m not going to pass that opportunity.”

“He is definitely a big star and to fight under that undercard would be amazing and if we can get the co-main event, then that’d be even more spectacular so yeah man.

“He goes in with confidence and that’s something that I like to lead into my fights. When I jump in that cage, it’s just me, my opponent and the preparation that I’ve had prior.”

  • Marlon Vera Says Aljamain Sterling Fight Is “Easy” On Paper For Petr Yan

UFC bantamweight contender Marlon Vera has given a prediction for his division’s upcoming unification title showdown, set for UFC 273 next month.

At the April 9 pay-per-view, reigning champion Aljamain Sterling and interim titleholder Petr Yan will look to finally settle their bitter rivalry over a year after it ignited.

The pair first collided at UFC 259 in March 2021. While Yan, the then-champ, was expected to extend his reign and was well on his way to doing so after three rounds, a fourth-frame disqualification crowned a new 135-pound king inside Las Vegas’ APEX.

After surgery kept him out and forced a withdrawal from his scheduled defense at UFC 267 opposite “No Mercy,” Sterling has been on the sidelines with the belt for 12 months. At UFC 273, he’ll be hoping to finally legitimize his reign by adding another blemish to the Russian’s record.

While some, including the #12-ranked Sean O’Malley, expect Sterling to arrive to the cage with an improved game plan from last time out, “Chito” Vera, the current #8 man in the division, doesn’t have high hopes for “Funk Master.”

Vera Expects To Hear ‘And New!’

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, the Ecuadorian gave his assessment of the April 9 bantamweight championship rematch. While he gives Sterling the kind of puncher’s chance that always exists in a sport with as many disciplines as MMA, he ultimately said it should be an “easy” win on paper for Yan.

“That fight, on paper, it’s pretty easy (for) Yan. He just has way better striking,” said Vera. “But that’s the thing with MMA. Sometimes you don’t need to be Israel Adesanya to win a fight. MMA, the speed is different, the range is different. You fucking throw three hooks in a row and oops, you won. It’s not a sport like boxing or kickboxing, (where) most guys are like, perfect technique.

“You see a guy who comes from jiu-jitsu not give two fucks and just start swinging from the fences, it’s hard to read those punches” Vera continued. “That’s why you gotta spread across a little bit of everything. But, you know, everybody can punch in MMA. And there’s so many things you can do; clinch, fight on the fence. On paper, I do believe Yan kicks his ass. Because Sterling gets tired every time he’s not able to get a hold of you. He gets tired quick; he gets anxious. Yan is pretty calm in there.”

Given his own form in the 135-pound weight class, Vera will certainly be keeping a close eye on proceedings come UFC 273 fight night. Having secured a second consecutive win by brutally knocking out Frankie Edgar last November, “Chito” is set for his first chance to enter the main event spotlight.

A few weeks after Yan vs. Sterling 2, Vera will headline a UFC Fight Night opposite top-five contender Rob Font. With a victory, the 29-year-old will likely move to within just one triumph of a meeting inside the Octagon with the bantamweight kingpin.

Do you agree with Marlon Vera? Is the UFC 273 co-main event “easy” to predict on paper?

  • Rob Font vs. Marlon Vera Targeted For April UFC Fight Night

A UFC bantamweight matchup between rising contenders Rob Font and Marlon Vera is set to headline a UFC Fight Night event on April 30.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto was the first to report the booking.

Font is coming off of his first setback in a while during his UFC career, losing to former UFC champion José Aldo last December. Before that, he earned four straight victories over the likes of Marlon Moraes and Cody Garbrandt.

This will be Font’s third straight UFC main event after headlining Fight Nights in his win against Garbrandt and his unanimous decision loss to Aldo. Earlier in his career, he earned wins over current Bellator champion Sergio Pettis and Thomas Almeida in dominant performances.

Font will face a tough task in Vera, who will fight in his first career UFC main event. He rebounded from a tough loss to Aldo in late 2020 by earning back-to-back victories over Frankie Edgar and Davey Grant.

Vera’s knockout of Edgar at UFC 268 was arguably one of the most violent finishes in 2021.

Vera began his rise in the bantamweight division by handing Sean O’Malley his first loss at UFC 252. He also earned wins over the likes of Andre Ewell and Brian Kelleher since making his UFC debut back at UFC 180.

Font and Vera will compete for positioning in the stacked bantamweight division. Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan will finally fight in their title rematch at UFC 273, nearly a year after their first matchup ended in controversy.

What is your prediction for Rob Font vs. Marlon Vera?

  • Archives: Marlon Vera Says Jimmie Rivera Is ‘Not A Real Man’ (2017)

Five years ago, a 24-year-old Marlon Vera let Jimmie Rivera hear it after Rivera pulled out of their fight. Little did young “Chito” that Rivera would pull out of a fight between them again three years later at UFC 247.

The following article is presented to you in its original, unaltered form, courtesy of The MMA News Archives.

    [ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED JANUARY 9, 2017, 9:46 PM]

Headline: Marlon Vera Says Jimmie Rivera Is ‘Not A Real Man’

    Author: Fernando Quiles Jr.

The biggest opportunity fell in the lap of Marlon Vera recently. He was called upon to replace Bryan Caraway at this Sunday night’s (Jan. 15) UFC Fight Night event in Phoenix, Arizona. His opponent was to be No. 6 ranked bantamweight Jimmie Rivera.

And just like that, the opportunity was gone.

Rivera claimed the reason he pulled out of the fight was in fear of coming off like a bully. Vera told BloodyElbow.com that “El Terror’s” only fear was fighting something that isn’t as bad as he thought:

“I think 100 percent he is (scared). Not because I’m the best in the division, but probably he accepted the fight without knowing who I am, and then when he watched my clip, he was expecting a tomato can. When he watched the fights, he probably found out I’m not a tomato can. I have two losses in the UFC, but both of those fights were very close.”

Vera was left confused by Rivera’s explanation for removing himself from the Phoenix card.

“All of the things he said is completely bizarre. It’s stupid, and it’s immature. All of the things he said show to the world how unprofessional this dude is. What this guy did, that’s why he’s not going to be remembered.”

“El Terror” teaches kids in New York City at Team Tiger Schulmann’s. Vera argues that Rivera’s unprofessional actions should prevent him from doing so.

“This guy said he teaches kids. I also teach kids in the gym. When I teach kids, I tell them that a real man keeps his word. To me, words mean more than a contract. This guy shouldn’t be teaching kids, because he’s not a professional. He’s not a real man. Every single fighter in the world wants to fight. You get a fight and the next day say, ‘I don’t want to fight.’ That’s proof you are not a real man.”

  • Sean O’Malley Slams Marlon Vera For “Super Weird” Charity Criticism

UFC bantamweight Sean O’Malley has responded to Marlon Vera after “Chito” criticized a video of “Sugar” giving out money to strangers.

O’Malley and Vera’s feud has been well-documented across the past year-and-a-half. The rivalry began when they met inside the Octagon at UFC 252 in August 2020. Inside the opening round, the Ecuadorian handed O’Malley his first professional MMA loss.

Since then, the pair have thrown shade at each other on social media and in interviews, with Vera even accusing O’Malley of ducking a rematch last year. The latest exchange came after “Sugar” put his charitable side on full display in a video uploaded to YouTube.

But while many praised the #12-ranked bantamweight for passing on $100 to other individuals who were perhaps in more need of it than him, “Chito” had a different view. Taking to Twitter, he branded O’Malley a “piece of shit” for recording the good deed.

“U don’t need a camera guy to help people. you piece of shit,” he tweeted.

    O’Malley Fires Back

As you’d expect, O’Malley has since responded to his foe’s comments. In a recent episode of his podcast, the Montana native slammed Vera, suggesting he wouldn’t have given the same charitable donations back to the community as he has.

O’Malley added that Vera showed his true colors by speaking out against his video and insisted he still felt good about his money-giving venture despite his fellow ranked bantamweight’s opinion.

“Giving out money. Some people didn’t like it,” O’Malley said. “This one guy (Vera) tweeted something like, ‘You can give money out, you don’t need a cameraman,’ something stupid… He said camera guy, I’m like, well, first of all, it’s my sister, she’s a girl, don’t be sexist. Girls can record videos, too. Some people have no respect.

“‘I thought it was pretty fun. I enjoyed it. I had a good feeling in my heart, giving money to those people. Most of them were like, ‘Oh my god, dude, I needed this.’ I still feel like a good person… It doesn’t matter what someone thinks. I think he got a lot of hate for it. I’m like, ‘Dude, you look like an idiot. Why would you say that? I’m helping people.’ I guarantee I gave more to my people than he ever has. My people, random people, there’s just no way he’s done that… Super weird. I think it just shows true colors.”

Since his setback against Vera, O’Malley has been back to his best. With three victories in 2021, “Sugar” recorded three finishes, earned three post-fight bonuses, and broke into the bantamweight top 15.

With “Chito” on a similar run having beaten Davey Grant and Frankie Edgar, it seems we could be seeing the pair run it back sooner rather than later. O’Malley has previously claimed the rematch is inevitable, and as both continue rising the ranks, it’s hard to imagine them not meeting in the cage again.

  • Sean O’Malley: I Don’t Think Marlon Vera Truly Believes He Beat Me

UFC bantamweight contender Sean O’Malley still considers himself undefeated in MMA ahead of his fight against Raulian Paiva at UFC 269.

O’Malley’s lone defeat in the UFC came courtesy of Marlon Vera at UFC 252. It was a controversial TKO finish in which O’Malley suffered a nasty injury and ended up leaving the UFC Apex on a stretcher after injuring his leg.

During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, O’Malley opened up on why he still considers himself undefeated despite the Vera loss.

“Yeah, I mean, that fight, I didn’t feel like I lost because his (Vera) skills were better,” O’Malley said. “I don’t think he truly, truly thinks he won that fight. The way that fight played out. it’s a rare occasion that that happens. Look at how many times I got kicked in the leg last fight against Kris (Moutinho), how many times I got kicked in the leg against Thomas (Almeida); you didn’t see my whole leg go completely numb from their toes or their shins.”

“It was a crazy thing that happened,” O’Malley continued. “I don’t feel like, mentally, I lost that fight. I go out there, have a rematch, and he beats me in a decision or finishes me fair and square, I have no issue saying I lost the fight. I lose in sparring, I lose in grappling. I’m not worried about losing. I just don’t feel like I lost that fight and a lot of people hate that I say that.”

Sean O’Malley Remains One Of The Top UFC Prospects

O’Malley has managed to rebound nicely from his loss to Vera, earning back-to-back finishes over Kris Moutinho and Thomas Almeida. His fight against Moutinho, in particular, opened many fans’ eyes as to how dominant O’Malley can be in the striking department.

Despite the strong start to O’Malley’s MMA career, he has yet to enter the UFC bantamweight rankings. This is mostly due to his level of competition to date, but that could change sooner rather than later.

O’Malley has recently called for a fight against Dominick Cruz next, as both get ready to compete on the same card. If he’s able to get past a tough Paiva at UFC 269, he could finally earn a spot in the stacked bantamweight rankings.

What are your thoughts on Sean O’Malley’s comments?

  • Sean O’Malley Says Vera Rematch Is “Gonna Happen 100%”

UFC bantamweight star Sean O’Malley is “100%” certain he’ll have the chance to exact revenge on Marlon Vera in a rematch down the line.

The pair fought at UFC 252 last August. At the time, O’Malley was unbeaten and riding high off two finishes following his return to action in March that year. In his previous outing, he’d recorded a Knockout of the Year contender against veteran Eddie Wineland. Vera, meanwhile, fell on the wrong side of a tight decision against Song Yadong in his prior appearance, a loss that snapped his five-fight winning streak.

Upsetting the odds inside the UFC Apex, Vera added the first blemish to O’Malley’s record with a first-round TKO. The stoppage came after the Ecuadorian’s leg kicks appeared to injure “Sugar,” seemingly disabling his foot after connecting with the perennial nerve.

Since then, both men have had success. After falling short of contention four months later with a defeat to former featherweight champion José Aldo, “Chito” re-established himself as a force to be reckoned with thanks to two impressive wins in 2021. Having avenged his loss to Davey Grant in June, Vera shot closer to the top 10 with a highlight-reel knockout of former 155-pound titleholder Frankie Edgar at UFC 268.

In the same period, O’Malley rebounded with two wins. A brutal knockout against former hot prospect Thomas Almeida was followed by a record-breaking striking performance against promotional newcomer Kris Moutinho at UFC 264 in July. He’ll have the chance to secure a third victory in 2021 this weekend when he faces Raulian Paiva.

    O’Malley Wants His Revenge

Despite having a tough opponent in front of him, O’Malley has never been one to shy away from discussing his future plans and possible matchups in the UFC. During a recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour, “Sugar” was asked about his former foe Vera.

Addressing the ranked bantamweight’s latest appearance in the Octagon, O’Malley reluctantly admitted it was a good performance, but suggested they wouldn’t be having the conversation had the fight against Edgar lasted another minute.

“Did he? (look good in his last fight). I did watch, I just didn’t know if you were being serious or not. I thought it was a pretty decent performance. I mean, I thought a minute left he would’ve lost that fight and I don’t think we’d be saying the same thing, but he won, he got the job done, and that’s all that matters. So yeah, I guess you consider that a good performance.”

When asked if he believes he’ll run it back with “Chito” at some point in the future, O’Malley suggested a rematch with the Ecuadorian is “100%” going to happen at some point. That’s despite Vera’s previous claims that O’Malley already turned down the chance to face him again.

“Yes, 100%. I think it’s gonna happen 100%… there’s a time and place for that fight, and I think it’s gonna be a big fight. It’s gonna happen. I don’t know when, I don’t know if soon, sooner or later, but it’ll happen,” said O’Malley.

Despite being unranked, it’s hard to imagine that would come in the way of a possible rematch with Vera. However, “Chito” is setting his targets high for his next outing. He recently called out Aldo for a rematch following the Brazilian’s five-round triumph over Rob Font last weekend.

Should O’Malley emerge victorious at UFC 269 this Saturday, he’s perhaps only one more victory away from closing the gap on Vera in the rankings and making a second clash a real possibility.

How do you a think a rematch between Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera would play out?
