“One of the Good Guys” – Burns Retires After Loss To Malott

Mike Malott will be the new name in the welterweight division’s contender rankings — while one fighter simultaneously lays down his gloves.

Malott got the Canadian crowd at UFC Winnipeg off their seats with a finish of former title challenger Gilbert Burns in the main event. Burns retired following the fight.

Both fighters looked to get their striking going during the opening frame. Burns landed a strong right early, but Malott appeared to get more effective strikes off during the round.

Malott got Burns in some trouble during round two, busting him up with a pair of right hands. Malott also consistently defended Burns’ takedown efforts, stuffing seven takedowns in the first half of the fight’s allotted time.

Malott didn’t need all 25 minutes, however. He dropped Burns in the third with a combination. Burns tried to get back up but was on wobbly legs. Malott floored him with another right hand, and follow-up shots ended things quickly.

Malott has now won four straight and is 7-1 in the UFC. He entered this fight off a win over Kevin Holland at UFC Vancouver.

Burns ends his career with five losses in a row. He was 3-7 in the UFC since unsuccessfully challenging Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight title in 2021.

Burns is a former Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion and a bronze medalist in the 2015 ADCC World Championship.

Burns made his professional MMA debut in 2012, going on to make his UFC debut in 2014. After an 8-3 run, Burns found a permanent home at welterweight. He was on a six-fight win streak before challenging Usman at UFC 258.

Mike Malott Says Kevin Holland Embellished Groin Shot Reaction – It wasn’t That Bad

Mike Malott doesn’t feel like the low shots landed to Kevin Holland were of a damaging magnitude that the latter presented it to be. Appearing on The Ariel Helwani Show, the Canadian combatant discussed several subjects in the fall out of his big win on home spoil.

Malott was the partisan favorite at UFC Vancouver and emerged with a win over a tenured UFC vet in Holland but the victory did not come without a touch of controversy attached to it. Low blows took place throughout the bout with Holland being on the receiving end of the errant shots with some detractors describing Malott as a dirty fighter in the wake of those illegal strikes.

When touching on those aforementioned elements of what happened in the British Columbia-based co-main event, Malott said,

“It definitely wasn’t the groin shot that it was acted out to be. There might have been a brushing of the cup, but I mostly hit him in the belt line, hip area.”

“I was a little bit frustrated with it especially afterwards. It wasn’t a bad groin shot. I think he really wanted a point deducted and I think there was a little bit of embellishment there.”

Mike Malott and Kevin Holland’s tense post-fight exchange at UFC Vancouver

Mike Malott and Kevin Holland fought things out in the confines of the cage. But there was a certain level of interacting after their clash following the debacle with the low blows and the officiating oversights some saw in how that was all handled. During the embedded interview above with Helwani, Malott mentioned that he went to apologize to Holland backstage but that the gesture was not accepted.

As the surging welterweight touched on the fact that he was sorry about the unintentional low strikes, Malott mentioned Holland responded by describing that as cheap. Mike Malott also mentioned that the UFC Canada cameras were following him and captured an instance of Holland stating how he could not respect Malott going forward after what had just transpired.

“In Any Just World That’s A 28-28 Draw” – Fans And Fighters Criticize Decision To Not Dock Point As Mike Malott Gets Win Over Kevin Holland At UFC Vancouver

In what might have been one of the more bizarre fights of recent time, Mike Malott pulled off perhaps the biggest win of his UFC career so far, defeating Kevin Holland in front of a native Canadian crowd in the co-main event of UFC Vancouver.

After a quiet start, Holland managed to catch a kick from Malott and dropped him with a right hand. Malott, however, managed to grab a leg and sweep, getting on top with grappling pressure. Back on the feet, Malott landed a pair of accidental low blows on Holland in a short timespan, the latter being a knee to the groin that clearly hurt Holland. Holland took the full five minutes and continued despite appearing to still be in pain, but nothing significant was landed following that. Despite this and Drew Dober’s point deduction earlier in the evening, Malott was not deducted a point.

After a bizarre sequence of events to check on Holland’s condition, Malott seemed to find success in the second round with technical striking, including a combination and knee to the body that appeared to hurt Holland. Holland seemed to not pour out as much as he should have in the third, and a slam takedown and an arm-triangle attempt helped to secure Malott the decision victory.

Malott has now won three straight and is now 6-1 in the UFC since his 2021 appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series. He entered tonight off a knockout of Charles Radtke at UFC 315.

Holland has now lost four of his last six, coming into tonight off a loss to Daniel Rodriguez at UFC 318.

VIDEO: Mike Malott Cracks Charles Radtke In Front Of Native Canadian Crowd

Feeling he had to defend his home country after comments made by Charles Radtke earlier during UFC 315 media week, Mike Malott performed in a big way, earning the finish of Radtke in their UFC 315 preliminary card featured bout.

Radtke came out pressing, but Malott found his rhythm early by utilizing crisp boxing combinations and leg kicks. Malott also flashed his power with a head kick and spinning back kick during the round. Though Malott was mostly the aggressor, Radtke had his moments, including a late-round flurry.

Malott didn’t need long into the second to put things away, however. A strong left hook and combination resulted in Radtke being rocked and dropped. Malott landed some brief ground-and-pound before referee Marc Goddard halted the bout, sealing the win for Malott and sending the Canadian crowd into a frenzy.

Malott, who earned a contract through Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021, is now 5-1 in the Octagon, with his sole loss coming against Neil Magny. Malott defeated Trevin Giles in November in his most recent fight prior to tonight.

Radtke has now lost two of his last three and falls to 3-2 since his arrival to the Octagon in 2023. He came into this fight off a 51-second knockout of Matthew Semelsberger in November.

‘Fought Like Strickland’ – Fans React As Mike Malott Bounces Back From Magny Loss In Lackluster UFC Edmonton Fight

After his winning streak was snapped in his last outing, Mike Malott is now back in the green column after getting the better of Trevin Giles as part of the UFC Edmonton main card.

The first round didn’t bring a lot of activity, with Malott controlling the action. The Canadian continued to control the action in the second, picking up his pacing toward the end. Giles, meanwhile, seemed to be unable or unwilling to pull the trigger.

“Proper” had a notable kick-based attack in the third round, doing damage to Giles’ body and legs. The American, however, did land some significant shots that busted up Malott’s face some.

Ultimately, the home favorite took a decision, sweeping the scorecards after three rounds of action that failed to impress the MMA masses.

UFC Fight Night: Brandon Moreno vs. Amir Albazi takes place on Saturday, and MMA News is here to bring you the final faceoffs from the ceremonial weigh-ins!

AfterĀ staging its latest numbered event at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi last weekend, MMA’s leading promotion has remained on the road for a card inside the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

In the main event, former two-time UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno returns close to nine months on from a defeat to Brandon Royval in Mexico City. Having now lost two straight by way of split decision, “The Assassin Baby” will look to get back to winning ways at the expense of the charging Amir Albazi.

Setting the stage for them in another 125-pound contest will be Erin Blanchfield and Rose Namajunas. After winning two straight in the division this year, the ex-strawweight queen will look to notch her biggest flyweight success to date and stake her claim for a title shot by adding to the woes of “Cold Blooded,” who was beaten by Manon Fiorot last time out.

Elsewhere, heavyweight knockout artist Derrick Lewis makes the walk for his latest assignment, Mike Malott has the chance to rebound on home soil, and bantamweight veteran Pedro Munhoz adds to his Octagon experience.

Ahead of the event,Ā all 28 fighters successfully made weight. With that, every fight is intact, and all that remains on Friday is for the athletes to face off one final time at the UFC Fight Night Edmonton ceremonial weigh-ins.
