‘Leaving The Sport As One Of The Greatest Of All Time’ – Fighters & Fans Pay Respects To Henry Cejudo Following Loss To Payton Talbott In Retirement Fight At UFC 323

Henry Cejudo’s four-fight second UFC run will end winless, as Payton Talbott managed to take a victory in Cejudo’s swan song at UFC 323.

Talbott managed to get the better of Cejudo in the first round, connecting on the more effective strikes while taking advantage of an aggressive Cejudo. Talbott even scored a pair of takedowns on Cejudo during the opening frame.

The former champion was clipped early in the second round, getting knocked down. Cejudo, however, swept for a reversal and got into top position. Talbott got back to his feet with about 90 seconds left in the round, throwing a flurry that included body shots that impacted Cejudo. Cejudo fought back with a wild flurry of his own, even though he was briefly dropped.

While Cejudo got top control again in the third, Talbott continued to fight his fight and land more shots to the body, going on to claim the unanimous decision win.

Talbott not only gets the biggest win of his career, but he’s now won two straight since suffering his first career loss at UFC 311 earlier this year.

Cejudo, who debuted in MMA in 2013, made his UFC debut in December 2014, going on to be a key figure in the UFC’s flyweight division. After unsuccessfully challenging Demetrious Johnson at UFC 197 for the flyweight title, Cejudo defeated “Mighty Mouse” in their UFC 227 rematch.

Cejudo then claimed the bantamweight championship at UFC 238 to become the UFC’s fourth champ-champ. He’d initially retire after retaining the bantamweight title over Dominick Cruz at UFC 249 but unretired in 2023, going 0-4, including tonight’s loss to Talbott, as well as an unsuccessful, controversial bantamweight title fight with Aljamain Sterling at UFC 288.

  • ‘Just Reminded Everyone That He’s The Real Deal’ – Fighters & Fans React To Payton Talbott’s Strong Rebound Showing In Win Over Felipe Lima At UFC 317

‘Just Reminded Everyone That He’s The Real Deal’ – Fighters & Fans React To Payton Talbott’s Strong Rebound Showing In Win Over Felipe Lima At UFC 317

After suffering his first loss in shocking fashion this past January, Payton Talbott showed an improved game in all areas and is now back in the win column, defeating Felipe Lima to open up the main pay-per-view card for UFC 317.

Talbott looked to bring the pressure early, but Lima answered by touching him up in the opening stages. Lima then looked to get Talbott against the fence and ended up in a clinch battle before securing a pair of takedowns on Talbott. On the second, however, Talbott rolled through and ended up on a top, landing some strong ground-and-pound before Lima got back to his feet. Back on the ground, Lima got to Talbott’s back, though Talbott was able to get back to his feet.

Lima landed a solid combination early in the second round before pursuing another takedown. Talbott countered it, however, and ended up on top again, getting the edge in striking both on the ground and on the feet. Talbott stuffed another takedown in the middle of the round, landing some noteworthy ground-and-pound before letting Lima back up. Lima would get a second takedown of the fight in the round’s final minute and got to the back. He rode the back clinch too high, however, and Talbott shook Lima off and mounted him before the second round’s end.

Lima looked to put his power on display in the third, catching Talbott with some of his strikes. Talbott looked to walk him down, but Lima would score one more takedown. He’d try to hold Talbott there, but Talbott was able to return to his feet and get out of his grasp. Talbott got the upper hand with strikes again before stopping another takedown attempt and working his way into mount. Lima tried to escape out the back, though Talbott continued to land ground-and-pound, hurting Lima with a right hand in the closing seconds.

Talbott won the fight 29-28 on all three judges’ scorecards.

Talbott, who made his UFC debut in late 2023 after an appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series, scored wins over Nick Aguirre, Cameron Saaiman, and Yanis Ghemmouri before a loss to Raoni Barcelos at UFC 311.

This is Lima’s first loss since dropping his professional MMA debut in 2015, snapping a 14-fight win streak. Lima had won his first two UFC fights last year, submitting Muhammad Naimov and scoring a decision over Miles Johns.

Payton Talbott Issues Statement On First Career Loss At UFC 311

UFC bantamweight prospect Payton Talbott has broken his silence after having the undefeated start to his professional career brought to a close this past weekend.

Talbott was among the heavy favorites to emerge victorious from the first pay-per-view event of 2025, UFC 311 from the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California on Jan. 18.

But in the featured preliminary contest, the charismatic 135lber had his charge up the ladder stalled by a veteran of the sport in Raoni Barcelos, who utilized his grappling prowess to outpoint his much younger opponent across three rounds.

While three straight UFC wins and an unblemished 9-0 record brought plenty of hype to Talbott’s name, cries of “fraud checked” were quick to fly around some MMA circles — as is often the case when a promising prospect endures a setback.

But after taking some days to digest the result before releasing a statement, it doesn’t appear as though the defeat in Los Angeles has dented the up-and-comer’s motivation.

“The vet gave me my first scar,” he wrote on Instagram. “May the skin heal itself to be strong and never split again. lucky to have such people in my life. fortunate to be able to learn valuable lessons. still had fun.”

Having opened his Octagon account for the year with a first career loss, Talbott will be looking to reverse his 2025 fortunes when he makes the walk once again.

And at the age of just 26, it’s safe to say that there’s plenty of time for the talented striker to round out his game in the months and years to come.

CSAC Releases Fight-Day Weights For UFC 311; Dvalishvili, Moicano, Talbott Among Biggest Changes

Some fighters piled on plenty of pounds between hitting the scale last Friday and making the walk for the UFC 311 pay-per-view on Saturday.

The mixed martial arts leader opened its PPV account for 2025 this past weekend in Los Angeles, where Inglewood’s Intuit Dome played host to two championship contests and a host of intriguing matchups.

While facts such as fight-day weights and base purses are rarely seen officially, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) provides more disclosure for events under its jurisdiction.

And amid conversations in the MMA community after the release of payouts for those who competed at UFC 311, there’s a new topic of discussion regarding weight discrepancy.

Renowned MMA reporter Aaron Bronsteter shared the figures via CSAC this week, with the most notable increases from weigh-in day to fight night coming from Tagir Ulanbekov, Payton Talbott, Merab Dvalishvili, Raoni Barcelos and Renato Moicano — all of whom weighed 17 percent more a day on from weighing in.

With his 26.8-pound change, Moicano was 3.8 pounds heavier for his unsuccessful title challenger opposite Islam Makhachev in the UFC 311 main event.

The biggest discrepancy, meanwhile, came in the main card middleweight contest between Reinier de Ridder and Kevin Holland. With a 15 percent increase, the Dutchman boasted a 21.6-pound advantage over “Trailblazer,” who gained just 4 percent post-weigh-in.

Second in that regard was the gap between Jamahal Hill and Jiří Procházka. “Sweet Dreams” took to the cage 13.6 pounds heavier than his fellow former champ, who ultimately emerged victorious after knocking the American out in round three.

‘Needs To Go To Dagestan’ – Fans React As Payton Talbott Suffers First Career Loss In One-Sided Fashion vs. Raoni Barcelos At UFC 311

In what has perhaps been the biggest shock of the night thus far at UFC 311 — the promotion’s first pay-per-view card of the year — Payton Talbott’s undefeated record came to an end at the hands of Raoni Barcelos.

Barcelos dominated the fight from start to finish, using his size and wrestling to success. The Brazilian, in fact, dominated the opening round and appeared to put a hurting on the American up-and-comer. Talbott had a sense of urgency in the second round, trying to take control and come out on the front foot, but Barcelos simply did more.

The veteran’s success continued into the third round, as he swept the judges’ scorecards.

Arriving to the UFC off a win on Dana White’s Contender Series, Talbott had scored wins over Nick Aguirre, Cameron Saaiman, and Yanis Ghemmouri.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s result marked Barcelos’ second straight win, with his last fight coming back at UFC Mexico City last year, where he defeated Cristian Quiñonez.

  • Payton Talbott Has Surprise Opponent In Mind After UFC 311 Return: ‘He Has This Vendetta Against Women’

Payton Talbott Has Surprise Opponent In Mind After UFC 311 Return: ‘He Has This Vendetta Against Women’

Payton Talbott was one of the breakout stars of 2024 after extending his winning streak inside the Octagon to 3-0. The 26-year old earned back-to-back performance bonuses for his finishes over Cameron Saaiman and Yanis Ghemmouri which have marked him out as one of the most exciting bantamweights in the world right now.

He’s now set to continue this momentum into 2025 when at UFC 311 on January 18, he takes on Brazil’s Raoni Barcelos at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. Whilst the 11-fight UFC veteran is his primary focus right now, Talbott has his eyes on another potential opponent.

Rather than having a name in and around the top 15 which he hopes to meet inside the Octagon if he is successful against Barcelos, the Las Vegas native has a bone to pick with the incredibly controversial Andrew Tate. As a former kickboxer who last competed in 2020, Tate has been linked with fighters calling him out for several years.

His current legal issues, which include him being placed under house arrest in Romania for human trafficking, have stopped any form of contest from ever happening but Talbott still wanted to put his intentions out there during a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani show.

“Yeah, that’s the one. Yeah, let’s get that going. I’d take that; I’d take that. Yeah, yeah, it’s just a free-for-all.”

When asked why he wants to have a fight with Tate, who is a huge name in popular culture for a lot of undesirable reasons, Talbott said that it’s his heavily criticized views on women that particularly bother him.

“He’s just the antithesis of me,” Talbott said. “It seems like someone just cheated on him when he was younger, and now he has this vendetta against women. I feel like he takes himself super seriously, and it’s just like, he’s kind of a poison for masculine culture.”

  • Payton Talbott Branded ‘Brutally Overrated’ By Fellow UFC Bantamweight Prospect: ‘If You Watch His Debut…’

Payton Talbott Branded ‘Brutally Overrated’ By Fellow UFC Bantamweight Prospect: ‘If You Watch His Debut…’

Payton Talbott has made a splash in the Octagon thus far, but one of his UFC bantamweight peers doesn’t see what all the fuss is about.

After beginning life on mixed martial arts’ biggest stage at the low-capacity Apex, inside of which he submitted Nick Aguirre and knocked out Cameron Saaiman, Talbott had a major chance to introduce himself to the wider audience on June 29.

On the preliminary card of the UFC 303 pay-per-view event at T-Mobile Arena, Talbott shared the Octagon with Yanis Ghemmouri — briefly.

The Frenchman was dropped and stopped with ground-and-pound just 10 seconds into the very first round, moving Talbott to a perfect 9-0 record as a professional and further establishing him as one to watch at 135 pounds.

But not everyone is buying into the hype…

Loughran Shares ‘Good But Not Great’ View On Talbott

During a recent interview with InsideFighting, UFC bantamweight prospect Caolan Loughran gave his take on some of the prospects, stars, and champions plying their trade in the sport’s premier promotion.

When Talbott’s name came up, the Irishman said he sees a good fighter, but not a skillset that warrants the amount of discussion being had regarding his potential in the 135-pound division.

“Good, but brutally overrated,” Loughran said of Talbott. “Good fighter. 100 percent a good fighter. … But if you watch his debut, taken down, back taken, flattened out, the guy was gassed, comes out again, taken down, back taken. Then he fights Cameron Saaiman who, as I said, will be gone (from the UFC).

“Then he fought Ghemmouri, who wouldn’t fight me. I don’t even want to talk about that guy. I urge anyone watching this, go watch — UFC France put up a video on Instagram of him warming up before he fought Payton Talbott, and it’ll tell you all you need to know,” Loughran continued. “But a good fighter. Getting all the hype at bantamweight.”

Should his wish be granted post-UFC 303, Talbott will have the chance to prove himself worthy of the hype next time out.

In the aftermath of his rapid victory at T-Mobile Arena, the 25-year-old Las Vegas native called out a fighter who formerly boasted similar promise in Adrian Yañez. After an unbeaten start to life in the UFC, the 30-year-old Texan fell short of the top 10 after suffering consecutive losses to Rob Font and Jonathan Martinez.

After bouncing back this past May, perhaps Yañez will look to stall Talbott’s own pursuit of a place in contention down the line.
