    ‘Heavyweight…Needs New Talent’ – Volkov Defeats Cortes-Acosta

In a battle of top heavyweight contenders that went down at UFC 328, Alexander Volkov managed to score a victory over Waldo Cortes-Acosta.

Volkov used leg kicks to his advantage in the opening round, landing a number of them on Cortes-Acosta. Cortes-Acosta landed some powerful shots, but Volkov’s volume and reach advantage helped him gain an early edge.

Volkov did some damage in the second round as well, landing a solid right jab that pushed Cortes-Acosta back and a leg kick that gave a negative reaction from WCA. WCA, however, brought some power and pressure in the third round, giving it right back to Volkov.

Volkov, however, did enough to earn the decision on the scorecards.

Volkov has now won six of his last seven fights. He came into this bout off a split decision victory over Jailton Almeida in another contender’s bout at UFC 321.

This snaps a three-fight win streak for WCA. He went 5-1 in 2025, including a pair of knockout wins over Ante Delija and Shamil Gaziev in November.

“The Real Deal” – Fans & Fighters React To Waldo Cortes-Acosta Continue Heavyweight Momentum With Finish Of Derrick Lewis At UFC 324

Waldo Cortes-Acosta has made a statement — he’s coming for a heavyweight title shot. Cortes-Acosta emphasized that with a second-round finish of Derrick Lewis at UFC 324.

Both men came out with stalking intentions, looking to find the opening to land the one power shot each needs. Though Lewis threw a few round kicks, there wasn’t much landing from either man during the first round.

Cortes-Acosta’s strategy seemed to be to tire Lewis out, and he did a lot of countering and dodging during the first five minutes. It seemed to pay off for Cortes-Acosta early in the second, catching Lewis with a cracking counter. WCA continued to use his jab and dodging speed to give Lewis issues.

Suddenly, in the second round, Lewis appeared to slip. Lewis did not get up immediately, and Cortes-Acosta jumped on, landing a flurry on of ground strikes until the referee waved off the bout.

Cortes-Acosta was one of the UFC’s top fighters in 2025, going 4-1. His star power rose in November by scoring a comeback, first-round knockout of Ante Delija at UFC Vegas 110, and then making a quick turnaround and knocking out Shamil Gaziev at UFC Qatar three weeks later.

Lewis is now 3-2 in his last five fights.

VIDEO: Waldo Cortes-Acosta Pulls Out Quick Highlight KO At UFC Qatar On Just Three Days’ Notice

Just three weeks after his most recent fight, and taking the fight on such short notice that he didn’t land in Qatar until an hour before weigh-ins, Waldo Cortes-Acosta has done something seemingly unreal.

Only three days after accepting the opportunity, “Salsa Boy” made quick work of Shamil Gaziev at UFC Qatar, scoring a knockout in less than 90 seconds.

The two were swinging almost right away, with Cortes-Acosta cracking Gaziev with his power. And then, over a minute into the fight, WCA landed a single right hand that put Gaziev out.

This was Cortes-Acosta’s first fight since UFC Vegas 110 three weeks ago. There, he appeared to be a first-round KO victim of Ante Delija — only for it to be an eye poke, and WCA came back to score the knockout of Delija seconds after the fight re-started.

WCA has now won eight of nine and pulls off this amazing turnaround to continue his bounce back from a loss to Serghei Pavlovich at UFC Shanghai.

“Wild Sequence Of Events” – Fans & Fighters Stunned As Waldo Cortes-Acosta Goes From Getting KO’d After An Eye Poke, To Finishing Ante Delija Seconds Later In Bizarre UFC Vegas 110 Co-Main Event

One week after an eye poke spoiled the UFC heavyweight championship match between Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane at UFC 321, UFC Vegas 110 has given us another major chaotic moment as Waldo Cortes-Acosta goes from losing via first-round finish, to winning via first-round finish after another eye poke controversy.

The two engaged in exchanges and clinch work, with both men testing each other’s strength and feeling each other out. Delija, however, started to get more of the upper hand. That was emphasized in what appeared to be a fight ending sequence — where a barrage of punches left WCA seemingly out on his feet.

Replay review, however, showed that Cortes-Acosta was the victim of an eye poke, halting any celebrating that was going on in Delija’s corner. A doctor then went into the Octagon and observed Cortes-Acosta.

Despite the number of people in the Octagon and use of replay review, the fight was allowed to continue. And seconds later, as the two swung away, Cortes-Acosta folded Delija, sending him crumbling and finishing with a few shots from up top.

Segrei Pavlovich and Waldo Cortes-Acosta did not do much to raise the current reputation of the UFC’s heavyweight division at UFC Shanghai, though Pavlovich was able to easily get his hand raised.

The pair did a lot of circling during the opening frame, with Cortes-Acosta on the outside, both trying to feel the other’s power with jabs. After an accidental clash of heads, the two began to exchange. Pavlovich connected cleaning with less than two minutes left, briefly pushing Cortes-Acosta to the fence. Cortes-Acosta tried to get a rhythm going, mixing in low kicks with his punches, though Pavlovich caught him coming in again with an uppercut.

Pavlovich strung a few power shots together during the second round, including a right hand that stumbled Cortes-Acosta back. Cortes-Acosta tried to push the pace in the final minute of the frame, but Pavlovich seemed to remain the one landing the more effective strikes in their exchanges.

After some leg kick trading, Pavlovich landed a strong right hand that stumbled Cortes-Acosta back. A late combo from Pavlovich appeared to do damage, as did another right hand seconds later, but it wasn’t enough to get the finish.

Pavlovich now has won two straight, coming into this bout off a win over Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC Saudi Arabia in February.

Spann tried to take back control in the second, but Cortes-Acosta’s boxing proved to be too much. A jab and cross ultimately wobbled “Superman,” and on the ground, “Salsa Boy” laid in vicious ground-and-pound with seconds remaining in the second frame to finish the fight.
