  • Wang Cong Rips UFC Champ Valentina Shevchenko For Skipping Q&A Appearance With Her

Wang Cong has reignited her rivalry with Valentina Shevchenko — and this time, it’s happening outside the cage.

The Chinese contender took to social media ahead of UFC Macau, claiming the reigning flyweight champion pulled out of a planned joint fan Q&A appearance to avoid sharing the stage with her. The two were expected to appear together during fight week festivities, but according to Cong, those plans changed at the last minute.

“Valentina and I were originally scheduled to appear together at the UFC Macau fan Q&A,” Cong wrote on Instagram. “However, she submitted a request to UFC to opt out of the joint appearance, refusing to share the stage with me.”

“The Joker” didn’t stop there, launching into a sharp critique of Shevchenko’s character and fighting style while referencing their past encounter.

“As my defeated opponent, it’s clear she’s afraid I’ll expose the truth behind her lies,” Cong added. “She’s a sore loser with no class—nothing more than a compulsive liar who can’t handle defeat.”

“Oh, and one more thing. I call her ‘Box Office Poison,’ because boring fights are exactly what she’s good at.”

The tension between the two dates back to 2015, when Cong defeated “Bullet” by decision in a kickboxing bout — a result that still stands as one of the few losses on the champion’s striking résumé. While Shevchenko’s team has long disputed the outcome, Cong has continued to lean on that victory as leverage in her pursuit of a UFC showdown.

Currently riding a three-fight win streak, “The Joker” is working her way back into contention after a setback in 2024. She’s now scheduled to face Tracy Cortez at UFC 329 in July, a fight that could bring her closer to a long-awaited clash with Shevchenko.

‘The Joker’ Wang Cong Issues Statement On Shock UFC Macau Loss: ‘I Still Believe I Am The One’

UFC flyweight prospect Wang Cong is keeping her head high after a disappointing and surprising defeat on home soil this past weekend.

Wang, a former world champion in sanda and ex-Kunlun Fight titleholder, announced her arrival on MMA’s biggest stage in a major way this past August following success on Road to UFC.

“The Joker” violently knocked out Victoria Leonardo on debut, and her previous kickboxing win over Valentina Shevchenko led to talk of a quick rise up the ladder at 125 pounds.

That script, however, was emphatically ripped up by Gabriella Fernandes, who headed to enemy territory to face Wang as a significant underdog on the main card of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Macau.

The Brazilian executed a memorable club-and-sub finish in round two, dealing a blow to the hype behind Wang and the perception of her chances of success inside the Octagon.

As if often the case when newcomers lose for the first time in the UFC, the defeat to Fernandes caused cries of “fraud checked” from some in the MMA community online. Wang, however, will not be deterred.

“Thanks for those who came out on Saturday night and fans supported me,” Wang wrote on Instagram. “This is the fight game, one mistake can cost you the match. But I’m good, no injuries and in good spirit. I still believe I’m the one 🏆 without doubt. I will come back soon @ufc . Also congratulation @gabriella_tko , thank you for taking the fight. Hope you enjoy the China trip.❤️🤡 #ufcmacau

It remains to be seen what will come next for Wang, but the charismatic Chinese fighter will look to immediately return to winning ways when she makes the walk for the first time in 2025.

A fight that appeared to be a showcase for Wang Cong ended up being such for Gabriella Fernandes, as the Brazilian finished “The Joker” in a huge upset at UFC Macau.

Cong looked sharp in the first round, landing strikes with crisp power while also stuffing a pair of takedown attempts from Fernandes. But the underdog brought her momentum to a quick halt in the middle of the second round.

Fernandes rocked her Chinese opponent with a head kick before landing a hook that dropped her again. She subsequently sunk in a rear-naked choke that left “The Joker” unconscious.

According to the ESPN broadcast, a Fernandes win via submission at UFC Macau had +3000 odds.

After defeating Paula Luna earlier this year on Road to UFC, Cong — who holds a kickboxing victory over Valentina Shevchenko — made her Octagon debut at UFC Vegas 96 in August, knocking out Victoria Leonardo in just 62 seconds.

Former LFA interim flyweight champion Fernandes, meanwhile, lost to Jasmine Jasudavicius and Tereza Bledá before a split decision win over Carli Judice earlier this year.
