The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is a mixed martial arts organization founded in 2018. It is the first major MMA promotion to feature a regular season, post-season and championship.
Donn Davis, the founder of the Professional Fighters League, announced Wednesday that he is stepping down as chairman of the organization he built from the ground up eight years ago.
Davis, 63, posted a statement on X reflecting on his tenure and expressing gratitude to employees, investors, fighters, and fans. “I gave you everything I’ve got,” Davis wrote.
The departure caps a stunning executive shakeup at PFL in January 2026. Former CEO Peter Murray and longtime president Ray Sefo have also parted ways with the promotion in recent weeks. According to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, PFL has also laid off several long-time employees.
Davis acquired World Series of Fighting in 2017 and transformed it into PFL, launching in 2018 with its signature season format featuring $1 million championship payouts. Under his leadership, PFL expanded globally, acquired Bellator in November 2023, and signed former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.
The timing is notable as PFL’s ESPN broadcast deal is set to expire at the end of 2026. Former Time Warner executive John Martin was brought in as CEO in late 2025 to guide the promotion through this critical period.
On the same day as Davis’s announcement, PFL revealed new funding from Knighthead Capital Management and 885 Capital, along with a new nine-member Board of Directors.
Cris Cyborg has doubled down on her pursuit of Dakota Ditcheva for her retirement fight, responding directly to the PFL star’s recent comments on The Ariel Helwani Show.
The 40-year-old featherweight champion took to social media to address Ditcheva’s skepticism about the matchup, pledging to make 135 pounds for a superfight scheduled for fall 2026.
“I can make 135 for a superfight in the fall @dakotadofficial,” Cyborg wrote. “If this is a fight you want… there isn’t a bigger fight that the @PFLMMA can put on for either one of us. I’m 40. My body carries much less muscle than it did when I struggled to make 140. I won’t miss weight for my retirement fight.”
The callout comes after Ditcheva appeared on The Ariel Helwani Show on January 13, where she questioned the logic of facing Cyborg at a catchweight. The undefeated flyweight contender suggested the legendary champion should instead face Leah McCourt, who has been requesting the fight for years.
“Respectfully, she’s not giving the fight. I am,” Ditcheva said on the show. “I 100% would be the one who sells that fight more. It would be a superfight, but she’s calling me out like she’s picking me. She needs me.”
Cyborg won the PFL featherweight title in December at PFL Lyon, submitting Sara Collins in the third round. The Brazilian legend has stated 2026 will mark her final year competing in MMA, making the choice of opponent for her farewell fight a significant decision for both her legacy and PFL’s promotional plans.
Ditcheva, currently recovering from a broken hand that forced her withdrawal from PFL Dubai in February, hopes to return in April or May. The 27-year-old captured the 2024 PFL flyweight tournament championship and remains undefeated at 15-0.
Ray Sefo, a legendary kickboxer who has been a long prominent face of the PFL’s executive team, has parted ways with the MMA organization.
The news was first reported by Ariel Helwani on the January 13 edition of The Ariel Helwani Show. Helwani added that Sefo is one of several names in the organization’s behind-the-scenes team who have also parted ways with the PFL.
Sefo had a highly successful kickboxing career, winning championships with the ISKA and World Muay Thai Federation, along with being the K-1 World Grand Prix 2000 runner-up.
He transitioned to an executive role following the end of his fighting career. In 2012, Sefo became one of the founding members of the World Series of Fighting, being named its president. Sefo found himself in a similar role when the WSOF re-branded to the PFL in 2017.
As noted by Helwani, however, Sefo’s role seemed to be diminished during the PFL’s 2025 campaign.
PFL Parts Ways With Longtime President Ray Sefo
Sefo is the second major PFL executive to depart the promotion.
Earlier this week, the PFL announced that Peter Murray, the former CEO of PFL and the recent CEO of PFL International, was leaving the organization.
Under the vision of John Martin, who was named the new PFL CEO in July 2025, the PFL has gone through recent reorganization and changes ahead of 2026.
The PFL’s first event of 2026 will be on February 7 at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The card will feature Usman Nurmagomedov defending his lightweight title against Alfie Davis and Ramazan Kuramagomedov facing Shamil Musaev for the PFL welterweight championship.
The Professional Fighters League returns to the United States for its first domestic event of 2026, as PFL Pittsburgh takes over the UPMC Events Center on March 28. The event marks the city’s first major MMA show in nearly a decade.
Former Bellator middleweight champion Johnny Eblen (16-1) headlines against Bryan Battle (12-2, 1 NC) in a pivotal 185-pound clash. Eblen looks to rebound after losing his title in dramatic fashion in Cape Town, while Battle makes his highly anticipated PFL debut after signing as one of the most sought-after free agents in late 2025. The former Ultimate Fighter winner enters with momentum, having secured back-to-back first-round finishes in Dirty Boxing Championship.
The co-main event features a hometown hero, as Pittsburgh native Dalton Rosta (11-2) returns to action following his run to the 2025 PFL World Tournament Finals. He faces former PFL champion Impa Kasanganay (19-6) in a matchup that pits two of South Florida’s top gyms against each other—Rosta’s Kill Cliff against Kasanganay’s American Top Team.
“Bringing the PFL to Pittsburgh marks a major milestone for us,” said PFL CEO John Martin.
The main card airs at 10:00 pm ET on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.
PFL Pittsburgh Tickets
Pre-sale tickets are available January 27 via Ticketmaster, with general sale beginning January 29.
Francis Ngannou is actively preparing for his return to MMA, with his head coach Eric Nicksick revealing that the former UFC heavyweight champion is in the best shape of his career.
Ngannou, who captured the PFL Super Fights heavyweight title with a first-round stoppage of Renan Ferreira in October 2024, has one fight remaining on his PFL contract. According to Nicksick, “The Predator” is fully committed to getting back in the cage in 2026.
Speaking to MMA Fighting, Nicksick shared details about his recent conversations with the 39-year-old Cameroonian knockout artist.
“We talk all the time and he was out in Dubai, he’s back in Cameroon, he’s coming back to Vegas here soon,” Nicksick said. “Francis always holds his cards close to the chest and I just know Francis. He’s a guy that he’s going to call me up on a Sunday and say, ‘Hey, we’re fighting Friday.’ It’s one of those things with him. We talked recently and that’s basically what he said. He goes, ‘Hey, Bubba, I want to come back and get back into MMA.’”
Nicksick was particularly impressed by Ngannou’s current physical condition, noting a dramatic transformation in the heavyweight’s physique.
“He’s the lightest I’ve ever seen him,” Nicksick revealed. “He called and FaceTimed, I saw his face right away and it was like chiseled. Usually, he’s like a little bit more plump and he’s been eating and stuff like that, but his knee is feeling good, so he’s getting his roadwork. He’s training every day and his weight was down.”
When Nicksick inquired about potential upcoming fights, Ngannou confirmed he’s working on several options.
“I was like, ‘Yo, we got something coming up?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, I’m working on a few things.’ So hopefully, we see him back in the cage in 2026. And then the sky’s the limit for him, man.”
PFL Planning ‘Something Very Special’ for Ngannou
Last month, PFL CEO John Martin confirmed the promotion is working on a major matchup for Ngannou’s final contracted fight.
“I’ve spoken to Francis a number of times, he knows we’re working on something very special for him,” Martin told MMA Fighting. “Francis knows that we’re looking forward to him fighting in 2026, relatively soon hopefully and we’re trying to put something together that’s very special for him. He’s got one more fight under his contract and we’ll see what happens after that.”
The most logical opponent for Ngannou appears to be Vadim Nemkov, who became the PFL heavyweight champion by submitting Renan Ferreira in the first round in December. Ngannou has previously mentioned Nemkov as a potential opponent, and the Russian two-division champion has expressed interest in the matchup.
“I think about Francis and the possibility of fighting him,” Nemkov told MMA Junkie. “If that’s what my next fight is then great. It’s really for PFL to set up and make it work.”
UFC Return Remains Unlikely
Despite Ngannou recently indicating a willingness to return to the UFC for the promotion’s planned White House event in June 2026, Dana White has made it clear that a reunion isn’t happening. Ngannou even suggested he’d be willing to fight Jon Jones at the event.
White quickly dismissed any possibility of bringing Ngannou back when asked about the fighter’s comments.
“I don’t know how I can make it anymore f—ing clear,” White told The Mac Life while laughing.
Nicksick expressed hope that the two sides could eventually reconcile.
“I know what Francis brings to me and my family, and the way that he treats me, and that’s the way I judge him by his character. Same with Dana. Dana’s been nothing but nice and great to me. I wish that somewhere down the line that these two could mend those fences, just on a personal level.”
What’s Next for Ngannou?
With his PFL contract nearing its end, Ngannou will become a free agent after his next fight. The former UFC champion has options in both MMA and boxing, having previously expressed interest in a bout with Deontay Wilder.
For now, Ngannou appears focused on his MMA return. His demolition of Ferreira in 2024 proved he remains a force in the heavyweight division, and a clash with Nemkov would provide another high-profile opponent to add to his resume.
Ngannou’s record stands at 18-3 in MMA. He left the UFC in 2023 after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract following his unanimous decision victory over Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 in January 2022. Since then, he has lost boxing matches to Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua before returning to MMA with his dominant PFL victory.
The Professional Fighters League announced Thursday that Peter Murray, CEO of PFL International Leagues, is departing the organization after eight years with the promotion.
Murray served as PFL’s founding CEO starting in 2018, playing an integral role in the league’s growth and evolution. He helped strengthen the organization’s business operations, expand its global footprint, and establish PFL as a force in mixed martial arts. His leadership was instrumental during a period of significant development that included the acquisition of Bellator MMA.
In July 2025, PFL underwent a major leadership restructuring when former Turner Broadcasting CEO John Martin was appointed as the promotion’s new CEO. Murray transitioned to the role of CEO of PFL International at that time, overseeing the company’s regional leagues in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
“PFL would not be here today without Pete Murray’s relentless entrepreneurship and selfless leadership,” stated Donn Davis, PFL founder and chairman. “He has been my trusted and valued partner building the company and I look forward to his continued support.”
MMA journalist Ariel Helwani reported that the company recently laid off several longtime employees in addition to Murray’s departure. The organizational changes come as PFL continues to build toward its future under Martin’s leadership.
The PFL has arrived to Benin as it presents the 2025 PFL Africa Finals — and MMA News has you covered with all the action.
The PFL’s expansion efforts began a couple of years ago with the launch of PFL Europe, followed by the establishment of PFL MENA last year. Now, as was once promised when the PFL signed Francis Ngannou in 2023, the PFL has officially launched PFL Africa this year.
The fourth-ever PFL Africa event will determine the first-ever tournament champions in the promotion’s history.
The main event will see the champion crowned at bantamweight, as Nkosi Ndebele takes on Boule Godogo. Ndebele reached tonight’s championship main event after putting away Mahmoud Atef and Simbarashe Hokonya. Godogo defeated Shannon Van Tonderin in the first round but lost to Karim Henniene in the semi-finals. Henniene was unable to compete, however, giving Godogo another chance to earn the tournament title tonight.
The co-main event will have the welterweight champion be crowned when Shido Boris Esperanca faces Yabna N’tchala. Esperanca reached the final with first-round wins over Ibrahima Mane and Ayinda Octave. N’tchala, meanwhile, scored decision victories over Sanon Sadeck and Emilios Dassi.
The heavyweight tournament champion will also be determined when Justin Clarke faces Abraham Bably. Clarke reached the final with finishes of Jashell Ticha Awa and Maxwell Djantou Nana. Bably, meanwhile, reached the final with first-round knockouts of Paul-Emmanuel Gnaze and Joffie Houlton.
The inaugural featherweight tournament championship will also be on the line as Alain Majorique takes on Wasi Adeshina. Majorique entered the tournament as a fill-in and defeated Mohamed Camara to reach tonight’s final. Adeshina, meanwhile, defeated Jean-Jacques Lubaya and Dwight Joseph to reach tonight.
The 2025 PFL Africa Finals begin at 11am ET/8am PT on the PFL App and Vice TV. If you can’t watch the action, MMA News has you covered with all the results and highlights below.

After already owning gold at light heavyweight, Vadim Nemkov now has a championship in a second weight class, defeating Renan Ferreira in the main event of PFL Lyon to become PFL heavyweight world champion.
After a little patience from both men, Nemkov was able to score a takedown. After landing a series of shots, Nemkov got into mount and began to try and find an arm-triangle choke. Ferreira looked to defend, trying to land from the bottom and find his own submission, going on to get into top position.
It was a fleeting moment, however, as Nemkov got back on top and worked his way back into securing an arm-triangle, getting the submission win and the world title.
Vadim Nemkov Becomes Heavyweight Champion By Submitting Renan Ferreira At PFL Lyon
Vadim Nemkov subs Renan Ferreira in the first.
There is absolutely no reason why Nemkov x Francis shouldn’t be made next. That’s a real heavyweight test for Francis, and he should be willing to take it.
Nemkov absolutely bullied the big man en route to the first-round sub. It did NOT look pleasant there for a moment, but dominant work as per usual from Nemkov.
I am a simple man. I will watch one round of Nemkov, a couple rounds if we are lucky and then spend six months ranting about how he should be in the UFC. Until the next Nemkov fight.
Nemkov vs Ngannou is probably the best HW fight outside the UFC you could make. Hell, it's better than 80% of the HW fights that the UFC could book themselves. https://t.co/s0KXo0YrmB
Nemkov went 3-0 in PFL in 2025, coming over following the promotion’s 2023 purchase of Bellator. Nemkov scored finishes of Bruno Cappelozza and Tim Johnson.
This was Ferreira’s first fight since getting stopped by Francis Ngannou at PFL Battle of the Giants in October 2024.
In the second-to-last fight of her MMA career, Cris Cyborg kept her position as one of the best female athletes in the sport, submitting Sara Collins to remain PFL women’s featherweight champion in the co-main event of PFL Lyon.
Collins had her fair share of moments in the fight, using leg kicks and trying to go use her jabs and grappling to keep Cyborg at bay. Cyborg, however, had the power edge and used it to her advantage, bringing pressure to Collins.
Collins scored a takedown in round two, but Cyborg’s attacks from the bottom, including a couple of submission attempts, looked to drain Collins’ energy. Cyborg’s power really came out in the third round, but Collins scored another takedown via a judo throw and threatened an Americana.
Cyborg, however, reversed and got to the back, putting Collins away with a choke — just the second win via submission in Cyborg’s career.

Cyborg, who has captured championships in every promotion she has been in, became PFL women’s featherweight champion by defeating Larissa Pacheco at PFL Battle of the Giants last year.
This was Collins’ first fight since her own fight late last year, submitting Leah McCourt.
It was quick, but it was also controversial. Baris Adiguzel has become this year’s PFL Europe bantamweight tournament champion following a sub-minute finish of Dean Garnett during PFL Lyon.
Adiguzel came out practically swinging away, looking to put this fight away with lightning strikes. He landed a series of left hands, while Garnett looked to answer with his own strategic striking.
Adiguzel’s attack became too much it seemed, as Garnett was dropped. When the referee stepped in, however, Garnett appeared to have in ankle, which tripped Adiguzel up. But the referee already waved off the fight for the way Garnett fell, giving the tournament title to Adiguzel.

Alex Chizov claims the top spot of one of PFL Europe’s 2025 tournaments, as he takes out Connor Hughes in three rounds to win this year’s PFL Europe Lightweight Tournament.
It was an action packed fight, with the two trying to use their strikes to end the fight in one move. Both men attempted to work their combinations, with Chizov backing Hughes back during the first round. Hughes rocked Chizov early in the second, however, showing how momentum swung both ways during this fight.
About 50 seconds into the third round, however, Chizov used the left hand to set up a strong right that put Hughes out cold for the tournament title win.

Chizov reached the final tonight with a first-round knockout of Mark Ewen and a split decision over Claudio Pacella.
Hughes has now lost in two straight PFL Europe lightweight finals, losing last year’s tournament final to two-time champion Jakub Kaszuba. Hughes reached this year’s final with knockouts of Sebastien De Franco and Gino van Steenis.
The PFL’s 2025 campaign is nearing its end, and two world champions and two PFL Europe tournament champions will be crowned on Saturday, December 13, with PFL Lyon in France. MMA News has you covered with all the action!
PFL Europe was the initial expansion effort of the Professional Fighters League (PFL), an effort that has since grown out to MENA in 2024. PFL Africa started up earlier this year, and PFL Pacific will be on the way.
With PFL looking to simplify its championship picture under the direction of new CEO John Martin, however, PFL Lyon will not only bring the conclusion to the PFL Europe season, but it will also bring us two PFL world champions.
The main event will see former Bellator light heavyweight champion Vadim Nemkov face 2023 PFL heavyweight season champion Renan Ferreira for the heavyweight world championship.
Since vacating the Bellator light heavyweight title to move up in weight, Nemkov has scored submissions of Bruno Cappelozza and Tim Johnson with the PFL earlier this year. Ferreira finished Ryan Bader in a PFL vs. Bellator heavyweight champions showdown before getting knocked out in seconds by Francis Ngannou at Battle of the Giants last year.
The PFL women’s featherweight champion will also be decided as the legendary Cris Cyborg faces Sara Collins. Cyborg has lost just twice in the sport and has racked up championships everywhere she has gone, including her PFL Super Fights title win over Larissa Pacheco. Collins is 6-0 in MMA, submitting Leah McCourt in her last fight one year ago.
The 2025 PFL Europe tournament champions will also be crowned earlier in the card, as Connor Hughes faces Alex Chizov at lightweight and Baris Adiguzel takes on Dean Garnett at bantamweight.
The event was broadcasted on DAZN in most countries, as well as via ESPN Unlimited in the U.S. If you missed any of the action, MMA News has you covered below with the full results and all the highlights below.

The PFL MENA season wrapped up on Friday, December 5, and we have all the results and highlights from the action here at MMA News!
PFL MENA was set up last year as part of the promotion’s expansion efforts, and alongside the already-established PFL Europe and PFL Africa, and the soon-to-debut PFL Pacific, PFL MENA has ventured on into its second season.
The card took place at the Dhahran Expo in Khobar, Saudi Arabia, and featured the finals in all four weight classes PFL MENA has tournaments in — welterweight, lightweight, featherweight, and bantamweight.
The main event saw Mohammad Alaqraa, who fell short in last year’s PFL MENA welterweight final, capture this year’s tournament title by defeating Badreddine Diani. The fight was primarily a kickboxing battle to start, with Alaqraa bringing more of the forward pressure and landing the cleaner power shots in the first 10 minutes. The third round was more competitive and saw brief grappling exchanges, but Alaqraa solidified his momentum with top positioning and short strikes throughout the fourth round. Diani pushed his own grappling in the final round, looking for takedowns and back control, but Alaqraa would take the decision and tournament title.
In the co-main event, Salah Eddine Hamli captured the PFL MENA lightweight tournament title with a submission win over Mohammad Fahmi. Fahmi opened the fight aggressively, but Hamli steadily answered with low kicks and sharp counters. After Hamli stunned Fahmi in the first, Fahmi appeared to be tiring out in the second round through multiple takedown attempts. Hamli controlled the action, landing the more effective strikes. After one more takedown attempt from Fahmi, Hamli locked up a D’Arce choke to score the second-round submission and PFL MENA tournament title.
Islam Reda captured the tournament title at featherweight, defeating Yanis Ghemmouri. Though neither man took clear control in the first round, with both having their moments, Ghemmouri scored a takedown in round two and looked to do damage. But Reda used headlocks and chokes threats to counteract, resulting in a grinding battle between the two. Reda would lock up a D’Arce choke on the ground in the final minute of round two to claim the title.
The title fights opened with Nawras Abzakh winning the 2025 PFL MENA bantamweight title in mere seconds. After a level change attempt by opponent Islam Youssef to counter Abzakh’s forward pressure, Abzakh locked him up in a guillotine. A slam was attempted by Youssef but was unsuccessful in freeing him, leading to a 36-second submission for Abzakh.
The event was broadcast on DAZN in most countries, as well as on the PFL App in the U.S and on Vice TV. If you couldn’t watch any of the action, MMA News has you covered with the full results and all the highlights below.

Archie Colgan continues to make waves in the PFL smart cage, but he seems open to an RAF opportunity if something ever came up. RAF refers to Real American Freestyle, which is an outlet that has served as the first, shoot professional wrestling organization.
As someone who can into MMA with an impressive wrestling pedigree, when asked if he has been following what RAF is doing at all and if he is intrigued by their efforts in any way, Coglan said [via Bowks Talking Bouts],
“Yeah, I think it’s really cool. I think it’s a good outlet for wrestlers to be able to become professional wrestlers.”
“Be able to get paid for years and years of work. I think it’s cool. I’m going to try my best to follow these events.”
“They got some weird subscription that it’s like.”
“I don’t even remember what it’s called but it’s like some weird off like Fox something that you got to like subscribe to something else.”
“It’s like you would literally only be subscribing to it for that. So I’m going to do my best to try and follow it.”
“I think it’s sick. I think it’s really cool that these guys are getting opportunities to make money doing wrestling.”
“If that was ever like an opportunity, I wouldn’t be opposed to like saying, “Yeah, I’ll step on the mat and wrestle again.””
“Like, I’m not against that for sure. I think it’s great.”
Archie Colgan thinks RAF is “a good option for MMA fighters”
RAF has given independent contractor opportunities to accomplished wrestlers and MMA fighters who came from the wrestling world to get reacquainted with their roots.
When asked for his thoughts on the kind of opportunities that RAF provides and who can benefit in the competitive martial arts scene, Archie Colgan stated [via Bowks Talking Bouts],
“Yeah, I think it’s cool. I think it’s a good option for MMA fighters to be able to step back and get back on the mat.”
“make a little bit of money, have some fun, show off their wrestling skills.”
“But also a really good option for the wrestlers who are still currently wrestling and trying to build something out of that.”
The PFL has arrived to Rwanda as it presents PFL Africa 3 — and MMA News has you covered with all the action.
The PFL’s expansion efforts began a couple of years ago with the launch of PFL Europe, followed by the establishment of PFL MENA last year. Now, as was once promised when the PFL signed Francis Ngannou in 2023, the PFL has officially launched PFL Africa this year.
The third-ever PFL Africa event will focus on the promotion’s semifinals of their weight division tournaments in this inaugural season.
The evening’s main event will feature combatants in the bantamweight tournament, as Nkoski Ndebele takes on Simbarashe Hokonya. Ndebele, the former Brave CF bantamweight champion, scored a first-round finish of Mahmoud Atef in their first-round matchup. Hokonya, who is 5-0, fought in EFC Africa for his first four bouts before upsetting Frans Mlambo in July.
The co-main event of the evening will be a welterweight semifinal that sees Shido Esperanca take on Ayinda Octave. Esperanca scored a 34-second submission of Ibrahima Mane in their first-round matchup in August. Octave, meanwhile, put away British Boloyoang in under two minutes in their first-round tournament battle.
PFL Africa 3 actions begins at 12pm ET/9am PT on the PFL App. If you can’t watch the action, MMA News has you covered with all the results and highlights below.

Karim Henniene is embracing the moment and foresees a path this weekend to vault himself to the PFL Africa finals thereafter.
Karim Henniene will collide with Boule Godogo at PFL Africa 3 on October 18th in a semi-final contest. Henniene appeared on MMA Canada and discussed the alignment with himself and his opponent, even insofar as the fact that they both earned victories on that prior PFL Africa card in July. Both also won their respective fights via split decision, and when discussing the EFC fighter’s resume as well as Boule Godogo’s primary skill set, Henniene said [via MMA Canada],
“So, what I knew about him, he has the same background as me, as judo. And after judo, I guess he jumped to boxing just like I did, you know. So, I guess we kind of have a similar background, but unfortunately for him, I’m better everywhere, you know. I’m [a] better grappler. I’m a better striker overall, you know.”
Karim Henniene “the explosion will be bigger from my side” at PFL Africa 3
Considering the razor-thin verdicts of their last fights, at least looking at how the assigned judges scored it, the Canadian combatant explained how different his mindset is heading into this outing, as Karim Henniene continued [via MMA Canada],
“So, I guess since, you know, it will be fire against fire, it will be a huge explosion, you know. So, but unfortunately for him, the explosion will be bigger from my side. So, yeah, I think this matchup will be unmatched, will be my best performance so far. And I can guarantee a finish. You know, I’m, you know, I’ve been; I know the only critic[ism] that people can give me is I didn’t finish my opponent.”
“You know, but I know how to win a fight, but sometimes, I don’t take as much risk as I should. But this time, I’m taking risk. F**k it. I’m going there for the finish, and you guys will see a huge finish. That’s it.”
In one of the most highly-anticipated rematches in PFL history, Usman Nurmagomedov made it no question this time around — scoring a clear decision over Paul Hughes to become PFL lightweight world champion in the main event of PFL Champions Series 3.
Nurmagomedov and Hughes battled technically over the five rounds, starting with Nurmagomedov coming out of the gate with low kicks and body work, plus working back control on Hughes after a takedown. Hughes tried to rally as the rounds went on, but Nurmagomedov repeatedly managed to find takedowns over the second and third rounds to stall Hughes’ momentum.
Hughes showed grit during the championship rounds as he managed to find escapes out of the grappling of Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov, however, was relentless with his pressure and went toe-to-toe with him in his striking. Hughes looked to press forward in the final round with his combinations, but Nurmagomedov’s defense and late takedown sealed the deal in his favor.
The judges scored the bout 50-45, 49-46, and 48-47, all in Nurmagomedov’s favor.
Usman Nurmagomedov Wins PFL Lightweight Title With Decision Over Paul Hughes
Usman Nurmagomedov def. Paul Hughes (50-45, 49-46, 48-47)
Those scorecards are ATROCIOUS. Usman winning is totally fine but the fight was MUCH closer than that. #PFLDubai
The two first met at the first PFL Champions Series event in January, with Nurmagomedov controversially retaining the then-Bellator lightweight title with a majority decision win.
Nurmagomedov improves to 20-0 (1 NC) with this win.
Nurmagomedov is responsible now for two of the now-three losses in Hughes’ professional MMA career. He came into this fight off a sub-minute finish of Bruno Miranda at PFL Europe 1 in May.
Corey Anderson’s expert level grappling was too much for Dovlet Yagshimuradov to handle, as he scored an easy decision to become the PFL light heavyweight champion in the co-main event of PFL Champions Series 3.
Yagshimuradov found success in the opening round with his striking, briefly troubling Anderson, but Anderson shifted some momentum with a late takedown. Anderson began to use that to start his pressure of Yagshimuradov, working heavy clinch work and getting the better of him all around in the grappling department.
The effect was clear, as Yagshimuradov started to gas and slow down. By the championship rounds, Anderson’s dominance was clear, as he completely overwhelmed Yagshimuradov with pressure and nearly scored a TKO on multiple occasions, easily taking the judges’ scorecards.
Corey Anderson Wins PFL Light Heavyweight Title With Decision Win Over Dovlet Yagshimuradov
Anderson’s run as a champion began when he won the then-Bellator light heavyweight championship in Dublin, Ireland, at a Bellator Champions Series event in March 2024.
Yagshimuradov, the 2024 PFL light heayvweight season champion, sees a seven-fight win streak snapped as a result of this loss.
Four years ago, Sergio Pettis was behind on the scorecards against Kyoji Horiguchi when he landed a spinning backfist knockout to retain his Bellator title.
Now, in a very similar circumstance, Magomed Magomedov appeared to be near a finish of Pettis in the second round before Pettis pulled off a spinning back elbow to drop Magomedov out cold in a bantamweight title eliminator at PFL Champions Series 3.
Pettis connected with jabs and a brief trip early, while Magomedov answered with a flying knee and a takedown, ending the first round in top control. Magomedov then used his grappling to take over the second round, consistently bringing Pettis to the ground and locking in body triangles, threatening chokes on multiple occasions, seemingly near a finish.
But in the round’s closing seconds, Pettis countered a jumping knee from Magomedov with a side kick before landing a spinning back elbow that put Magomedov’s lights out and gave him the victory.

In a battle of unbeaten heavyweights, Pouya Rahmani, after already besting him in a grappling match earlier this year, pulled off a hard-hitting, first-round finish of Slim Trabelsi at PFL Champions Series 3.
Trabelsi tried to establish the jab early, but Rahmani quickly turned things to his favor. Rahmani slipped him up on a flurry, but Trabelsi got his feet back under him.
Unfortunately for Trabelsi, one right hand quickly ended things, dropping him as Rahmani landed some follow-up shots to end things quickly.
Pouya Rahmani Puts Away Slim Trabelsi At PFL Champions Series 3
PFL fans and MMA commentators alike were left with their heads scratching as Makkasharip Zaynukov earned a win over John Mitchell via unanimous decision during the early card of PFL Champions Series 3 in Dubai.
While the first round was slow-paced, with both men struggling to find a rhythm, the second saw Mitchell find success with battering Zaynukov’s legs with kicks. He also defended a number of takedown attempts from Zaynukov, though he had moments by trying to press with strikes.
Zaynukov would finally find success with takedowns in the third, controlling the final round with his grappling pressure. That somehow seemed to be enough for the judges, one of whom gave Zaynukov a 10-8 round, to give him the decision win.
Makkasharip Zaynukov Earns Controversial Win Over John Mitchell At PFL Champions Series 3
That 30-26 has to be somekind of error by the announcer right? There is just no way..
One of the biggest myths in MMA is the supposed “Elite wrestling and cardio” coming out of the Khabib Nurmagomedov camp. Dog shit set up on those takedowns by Zaynukov who barely squeaked out a win against Mitchell imo. The striking they produce is of course shit as well.
— Tennis + Pick of the Day (@pluspickofdaday) October 3, 2025
That was a really close fight between John Mitchell and Makkasharip Zaynukov!
I have round 1 for Mitchell, round 3 for Zaynukov.
All comes down to how the judges see the second. #RoadToDubai

The two former UFC stars will add a bit of name power to the PFL’s women’s flyweight division and give some competition for Dakota Ditcheva.
It is currently unclear if one or both of the women will compete in the women’s flyweight World Tournament in 2026 or potential face Ditcheva to determine a PFL women’s flyweight champion.
Viviane Araujo, Ariane Da Silva Sign With PFL
Araujo, the former Pancrase women’s strawweight champion, made her UFC debut at UFC 237 in May 2019, defeating Talita Bernardo. She went 7-6 in the promotion, earning wins over the likes of Alexis Davis, Roxanne Modafferi, Andrea Lee, and Jennifer Maia.
Araujo and the UFC parted ways about two weeks after her loss to Tracy Cortez at UFC 317.
Da Silva (formerly Ariane Lipski) is a former KSW women’s flyweight champion who made her UFC debut in January 2019. She went 6-8 in the promotion with wins over JJ Aldrich and Casey O’Neill, while also having bouts with the likes of Molly McCann, Montana De La Rosa, and Jasmine Jasudavicius.
Da Silva was released by the UFC days after her loss to Wang Cong at UFC 316.
The PFL MENA season continues on Saturday, September 27, and we have all the results and highlights from the action here at MMA News!
PFL MENA was set up last year as part of the promotion’s expansion efforts, and alongside the already-established PFL Europe and soon-to-debut PFL Africa and PFL Pacific, PFL MENA has ventured on into its second season.
The card takes place at The Arena Riyadh Venue for Exhibitions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and will feature the semifinals in all four weight classes PFL MENA has tournaments in — welterweight, lightweight, featherweight, and bantamweight.
The main event will feature a semifinal in the welterweight tournament, as Mohammad Alaqraa takes on Ayman Galal. Alaqraa, the runner-up of last year’s welterweight tournament, reached tonight’s semifinal with a decision win over Omar Hussein in July. Galal, meanwhile, originally lost his first-round matchup with Mohamed Zarey, but the result was overturned to a no-contest after a failed drug test, resulting in Galal advancing.
The co-main event will see Mohsen Mohammadseifi facing Mohammad Fahmi in a lightweight semifinal bout. Mohammadseifi, last year’s lightweight tournament champion, began his quest for a second straight title with a decision win over Ahmed El Sisy in May. Fahmi pulled off a stunning first-round submission of Georges Eid on that same card.
The event will be broadcast on DAZN in most countries, as well as on the PFL App in the U.S. If you can’t watch any of the action, MMA News has you covered with the full results and all the highlights below.
